Here's one the Mrs wrote and recorded recently: Seeds of Fools

Anyone else? Could folk get political again?

Compared to your wife's artistry and beautiful singing, this isn't much of a listening experience; but it's about as political as I've gotten so far. Button for melody at the bottom.

Here you go Rob:

Seeds of Fools (W Arrowsmith ©2009)
(Without meaning to, our loving or ignorant actions can foster prejudice and intolerance.)

Jimmy was a sailor, at sea for many years.
His home it was the ocean with the other tars and queers.
On shore he kept his head down, ashamed to tell his peers.
A secret's sometimes best, 'cos your mother loves you so.

O we know it's painful, and O we know it's wrong
Prejudice is like a seed – when watered, it grows strong.
So mothers love your children, and teach them all the rules
Help them sow the seeds of love
Not reap the seeds of fools.

Sally was a young girl when first she met Ali
Like Romeo and Juliet, their love could never be.
He eats and prays a different way, O Sally can't you see?
That this way is the best, 'cos your mother loves you so

O we know it's painful…

Dave, he was an old man. He'd fought to save his land.
He always loved his neighbour and he'd always lend a hand.
But now they just ignore him, they pass him where he stands.
And years and years have gone, since his mother loved him so.

O we know it's painful, and O we know it's wrong
Prejudice is just a seed – when watered, it grows strong.
So if we love our children, we'll teach them all the rules
Help them sow the seeds of love
Not reap the seeds of fools.

Something Inside So Strong

[Labi Siffre]

The higher you build your barriers
The taller I become
The farther you take my rights away
The faster I will run
You can deny me
You can decide to turn your face away
No matter, cos there's....

Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Tho' you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone
Oh no, something inside so strong
Oh oh oh oh oh something inside so strong

The more you refuse to hear my voice
The louder I will sing
You hide behind walls of Jericho
Your lies will come tumbling
Deny my place in time
You squander wealth that's mine
My light will shine so brightly
It will blind you
Cos there's......

Something inside so strong
I know that I can make it
Tho' you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone
Oh no, something inside so strong
Oh oh oh oh oh something inside so strong

Brothers and sisters
When they insist we're just not good enough
When we know better
Just look 'em in the eyes and say
I'm gonna do it anyway
I'm gonna do it anyway

Something inside so strong
And I know that I can make it
Tho' you're doing me wrong, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone
Oh no, something inside so strong
Oh oh oh oh oh something inside so strong

Brothers and sisters
When they insist we're just good not enough
When we know better
Just look 'em in the eyes and say
I'm gonna do it anyway
I'm gonna do it anyway
I'm gonna do it anyway
I'm gonna do it anyway

Because there's something inside so strong
And I know that I can make it
Tho' you're doing me, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone
Oh no, something inside so strong
Oh oh oh oh oh something inside so strong

Because there's something inside so strong
And I know that I can make it
Tho' you're doing me, so wrong
You thought that my pride was gone
Oh no, something inside so strong

Azizi,

Thanks for posting this great song..... and it is a great song.

I'm really interested in what newer songs are being written (George's is great) to address the current drift to the right in th U.K. and Europe.

There is a history of protest songs in folk, but not much has been written recently that I am aware of ....... I'm sure you'll all prove me wrong!

There's Noel Greig's STAND TOGETHER, as sung by Roy Bailey and by Tom Robinson

Ch:All you gay women, all you gay men
    Come together, stand together
    And each others' rights defend

There are ghettoes in our cities
Some are black and some are white
Some you see and some are hidden
In the shadows of the night
To be gay is to be fighting
All the prejudice and lies
That condemn us to be running
Scared and lonely all our lives

All you gay women, all you gay men
    Come together, stand together
    And each others' rights defend

There are people in the cities
And the towns throughout the land
Who are saying to themselves
This is the time to make a stand
Workers, women, gays and black and white
Now opening our eyes
To the need to take control
Of both our bodies and our lives

All you gay women, all you gay men
    Come together, stand together
    And each others' rights defend

I saw Labi Siffre do his last sung gig. He said at the time that he was going into pure poetry performance at that time. This was back in 1997.

I asked him what song he wished he had written, to which his answer was imagne by John Lennon.

He would probably not say that today now that it has been milked to death by all the reality shows ...

I told him that I would have written his song "school days"

SCHOOL DAYS - Labi Siffre.

School days
I learned your dates and numbers
learned that you were the winners
that you were civilized
and I?
I was your burden

School days
I learned about your victories
the valour and the glory that was yours
and I?
The heathen
had to hide
cos God was on
Your side

You never told me
the thief came in the night
and stole my birthright
you never told me
the empire you built then
was founded on
the bodies of
my murdered brethren

You taught me to despise
me seen through your eyes
but now I clearly see
The lies you call
your history

Schooldays
you taught me with your movies
the red man was no man at all
he could not hold his alcohol
the black man likes to sing and dance
but does not have intelligence

Schooldays
you said my sins would be forgiven
If truly I repented
he'd wash my sins away
your way
but you have not repented
you are just the same

You never told me
that Jesus was a jew
and still you swear
his hair was fair
his eyes were baby blue

You taught me to despise
me seen through your eyes
but noe I clearly see
the lies you call
your history

School days.

Two quotations: "History repeats itself because people do not listen" and "All that is needed for evil to triumph is that good men should do nothing." Which is precisely why we have two BNP MEPs. Democratically elected, which, as I'm sure we are all about to realise, significantly reduces our capacity to argue about it.
Take a look at Tom Paxton's "We Didn't Know".

Yes I was a huge fan of Tom Robinson of the Power in the darkness period. Saw him loads of times. I thought he would be the English Springsteen. I'd rather have a drink with Martin, than the bloke in Meeting by the River.

Tom was having an affair with the Head of Drama at the school I was teaching in at the time. I never got to meet him but I locked onto his recordings - I was very sorry when he didn't seem to spot the potential himself!

Anyway, I wrote this, and I'll probably stick some chords to it soon.

The Blame Game Boys

Oh the rich man stood on his castle wall
And said that the poor deserve bugger all
So soon there was no one oiling the lock
And all the economy went to cock
And the radio kept up a stream of pap
And the tv pumped out nowt but crap
Dream of being a ce-leb/wag on a reality show
Buy this year's strip, and give it a go!

Chorus
The Blame Game Boys are out there , and at it again
First they tell you, that you're their friend
They say, Oh my friend, you're not a reading man
But from the book of hate I taken this plan
Its all these blacks and all these Asians
They ruin the fabric of our nation
And soon the bloke next to you in the pub
Has a mind like a jackboot or a club

And the schools couldn't teach the kids
And no one could reach
So much wrong-headed right wing crap had been preached

Chorus
The Blame Game Boys are out there at the school gate
Stopping the white kids calling 'em mate
You don't read too good, don't worry man
I've read the book of hate and I've got a plan
Its all these blacks and all these Asians
All the fault of this immigration
And soon the kid next to you is going through life
With a mind like a jackboot or a flick knife

So this is a song
To say your parents are wrong
If they vote BNP, they've been fooled and conned
You wanna go the place Hitler took the krauts?
Just think twice before you bring that about
Pride in Fatherland
Make the foreigner bow
It was bollocks then and its bollocks now!

I would like to suggest The Ballad Of Jamie Foyers by Ewan McColl and based on a Napoleonic ballad. What a wonderful song and a moving tribute to the members of the International Brigades who fought fascism in Spain in the 1930s.
Also in todays Guardian there is a marvellous photograph of some of the surviving members of the International Brigades receiving their Spanish citizenship at a recent ceremony in London.

One or two of you (Tom Bliss, for instance) might have heard "Molecules" by my brother John, former MC and act booker at the Topic in Bradford. The lyrics are online on the website I did for him and I reproduce them below; some of the named references are now a tad dated (Sharon, Arafat). There's a small sample of him singing it here.

Molecules by John Waller

Where did we all come from? If you stop and think
Our bodies are entirely made of what we eat and drink
We're all built up from molecules, our flesh and bones and skin
We take them in, they stay a while, then pass from us again
We eat we drink we breathe we grow, that's what humans do
Then micturate and defecate and the molecules pass through

What then am I made of, what tonight is part of me?
This morning's egg and sausage, the fish I had for tea
The bread and cheese I ate last week is still making my bones strong
I've beer inside my bladder, though that won't be staying long.

Last month the egg was in a hen, the sausage was a cow
The fish was swimming in the sea, but they're all inside me now
The bread was wheat, the cheese was grass, both were miles away
The water, malt and yeast and hops hadn't reached the brewery
We eat we drink we breathe we grow, that's what humans do
Then micturate and defecate and the molecules pass through

So where does it all go to, when it's finished being me?
Our turds are buried in the ground, the wee flows back to sea
Both join the soil and water from which living things will grow
To be eaten by some bugger else far away who I don't know

So what this means for all of us, I've thought of it a lot
Our bodies ever melting in some vast organic pot
The molecules that currently are part of me, it's true
Tomorrow will pass out again, and will one day be in you
We eat we drink we breathe we grow, that's what humans do
Then micturate and defecate and the molecules pass through

So there's Jew in every Muslim, dog in every cat
There's parts of Ariel Sharon that were once in Arafat
There's black in white, Chinese in brown, it nails the racist lie
Inside every ardent feminist there are parts of macho guy

There's things in Ian Duncan Smith* that were once in Tony Blair
There's parts of Ginger Rogers that have moved through Fred Astaire
There's some of us in all of us - and what really gives me hope
Is knowing parts of Ian Paisley have been shat out by the Pope.
We eat we drink we breathe we grow, that's what humans do
Then micturate and defecate and the molecules pass through

* Michael Howard, David Cameron ....

Here's how he writes about it on his website: "The basic idea for this occurred to me when I was ten years old; and wondered where, exactly, all the molecules that constituted my baby brother** had been a year earlier, before he was born. It much later became the basis for a stand-up routine before ending up as this song. The concept has been approved by Biomedical Scientists and rubbished by Statisticians. But parts of it must be true.."

I knew one was buzzing in the back of my head:

YouTube

Peppers and Tomatoes - Ralph McTell (Craig; Morgan; Robson do a fantastic version too)

This year in my garden I grow peppers and tomatoes,
Peppers and tomatoes, they grow together well,
And my neighbours all around me they grow beans and potatoes
Cabbages and onions in this village where we dwell.

And later in the year we will bring wine to the table
Bring wine to the table, and reap what we have sown.
Like my father did before me and his father did before him
And his father did before him, we will share what we have grown.

This little patch of dirt, this little pile of stones.
I can wash the dust from off my face, and skin
But this earth is in my bones.

Military vehicles are passing through our village
Passing through our village with young soldiers ill at ease.
Unsmiling and unshaven, distrustful and uncertain
Distrustful and uncertain, and all smoking constantly.

And my neighbours say "Don't worry for you are one of us,
You are one of us and it will not happen here",
But the next night at the café, when I bring wine to the table,
I bring wine to the table, but they are sitting drinking beer.

Oh, last night the hand of friendship fell heavy on my shoulders,
Heavy on my shoulders as I turned away to go.
As I said goodnight some old men, some old men and young soldiers
Were humming tunes and singing words to songs that I did not know.

Oh this little patch of dirt, oh this little pile of stones
I can wash the dust from off my face and skin,
But this earth is in my bones.

This morning my wife told me that she'd been to church on Sunday,
Been to church on Sunday, she had felt the need to pray.
Our children were baptised there but it was just to please the old ones,
Just to please the old ones, and I don't know what to say.

Tonight, as dark is falling, I am tending to my garden,
Tending to my garden, and the crop that I have grown.
And my car is heavy laden, and soon I'll start the engine,
Soon I'll start the engine, wake the children and be gone.

My shotgun it is loaded, and it's hidden in the cabin,
It's hidden in the cabin, and the evening's growing chilled.
My mouth is dry, my hands are moist, and if someone tries to stop me,
Someone tries to stop me, I am ready now to kill.

Oh this little patch of dirt, oh this little pile of stones
I can wash the dust from off my face and skin
But this earth is in my bones.

I am watering my garden, when I smell the cigarette smoke,
Smell the cigarette smoke, and I turn round in the dust
And I see the glint of rifles, but I cannot see the faces
But I recognise the voices that say, "You must come with us".

Dear Fatima

Dear Fatima, how pleased I was, your letter reached me here.
They sent it on from hospital, just after the New Year.
Don't worry love, the wounds have healed, the scars will scarcely show,
God willing, by the time we meet, I'll be the man you know.

And thank you for the photograph, oh hasn't Kasim grown?
Is that your hand stretched holding him, as if he stands alone?
I've kissed the hand a hundred times, and wished that we could be,
Back safely in each other's arms, with your hand holding me.

There's not much here for me to do, employment breaks the rules.
My spoken English anyway, won't let me teach in schools.
You'd smile to hear my tongue attempt, to make my accent clear,
It's not like Pride and Prejudice, the English spoken here.

I often wake up with the dawn, and lying in the gloom,
I conjure up your likeness here, within this shabby room,
The features of your lovely face, can sometimes seem so real,
That the heartbeat quickens in my breast, with the longing that I feel.

You don't say how you're managing, our savings won't go far.
Sell anything you like of mine, no need to keep the car.
I get about here on a bike, though I seldom go alone,
It's safer riding with a friend than walking on my own.

Goodbye for now, I'll kiss the page, just underneath my name,
I feel much closer thinking how, your lips will do the same.
Don't worry love the wounds have healed, the scars will scarcely show,
God willing by the time we meet, I'll be the man you know.

God willing by the time we meet, I'll be the man you know

"Anyone else writing anti-prejudice or other protest songs now?"

Yes. I seems ironical to me that the first BNP MEP should be for the East Riding of Yorkshire when Hull was the birthplace of William Wilberforce, whose work ended the slave trade in Britain. I'm writing a song for all the poeple who voted Andrew Brons in and all those who failed to vote to keep him out. As a resident of the East Riding it seems the least I can do.

I haven't written a song for years and don't know if I have one in me now, but there surely must be a song in the fact that Saint George was Turkish and therefore would not be allowed into Britain if the BNP has their way.

(And he's also the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, and Russia. I wonder what BNP supporters would make of that? Or George himself?)

This addresses a different sort of prejudice... more about the changing values and the need to keep up. But if we don't keep up, there can be real pain and suffering inflicted - forced marriages, "honor" killings, plain ostracism and so on.

DANIEL AND AYSHE
December 2007

They talk about it after prayers
Outside the mosque on Friday
And they will whisper after church
The wagging tongues on Sunday
   It's such a great surprise
   They can't believe their eyes
   They cannot understand
   Surely this can't be Daniel
   Taking Ayshe by the hand.

How could they do this to themselves
How could they shame their parents?
Is there a greater sin than this,
To man and God repellent?
These two, they need a word
   Such thing was never heard
From here they should be banned
   None should be seeing Daniel
   Taking Ayshe by the hand

His father cannot show his face
Alone he drowns his sorrow
Her brothers can't bear the disgrace
Such shame they cannot swallow
And who will be the boss:
   The Crescent, or the Cross?
   They cannot understand
There's only love for Daniel (when)
   Taking Ayshe by the hand

Cursed the day they left their land
Placing their child in danger
Her chance of Paradise is now lost
Walking out with a stranger
   Priest and imam will fight
   And neither will be right
   They cannot understand
   Heaven is watching Daniel
   Taking Ayshe by the hand.

OK, hot off the PC and a bit rough round the edges, a rallying call to my fellow East Ridingers.

The Legacy

In Hull, William Wilberforce first struck the spark
That kindled a beacon which lit up the dark
And as the flames soared it was clear to see:
The message that men must be equal and free.

Chorus:
So keep it alive, now, keep it alive,
William's legacy has to survive.
Freedom's hard-won so don't let it die
Use your voices and votes to stamp out the lies.

Today there are those who would put out Will's flame
And put our traditions and values to shame.
If you're black or you're brown, or a leftie, or gay,
Get out of our country, you're not welcome, they say.

Chorus

Now they don't have shaved heads, they wear collars and ties
But the cold light of hatred still shines in their eyes
And instead of the boot they use soft words and smile
But the message they peddle is equally vile.

Chorus

They may now think their views have legitimacy
And the Queen may invite them to join her for tea
But let's stand together and blow on Will's flame
And shout to these bastards "Not in my name!"

Chorus

So good people of Hull and the East Riding towns
Don't let these bigots and fascists gain ground.
We've opened the door to their doctrine of hate
Now let's slam it again before it's too late.

Chorus

Seeing as this thread has been resurrected
thought it's an apt excuse to mention this big expensive CD box set I bought about 10 years ago when it was first released....

"The Best of Broadside 1962-1988: Anthems of the American Underground from the Pages of Broadside Magazine"

"The set contains a variety of performers, topics, and musical styles that tell tales spanning the 25 years of the Broadside era (1962-1988), but many of them address contemporary issues as well, since the new millennium has not see the end of warfare, nuclear threat, ethnic conflict, immigrants' suffering, women's unequal rights, ecological devastation, and social injustice."
