Tech: Mudcat Google Friend Connect Experiment

Hi all,

You may have noticed something new on the threads page. You're seeing "Join This Site" and "Google Friend Connect". I'm kicking ideas around as to how to add a bit more to the member profiles and certain social features to the mudcat, without having to program or maintain them.

The Google Social stuff is the best solution for that so far. While I can't upload existing member data to it, it does support several other online membership doodads so many of you won't have to start from scratch building a profile. It links in to other things that many of us are already doing, and my professional opinion is that it's going to become more and more relevant in the days to come.

So, don't get excited, you don't have to do anything. If you don't want to play along it won't interfere with the mudcat the way it is and nothing will change for you. But if you'd like to experiment with me, thank you, and there are some neat features to this that I'll likely continue to fool around with.

My participating, you can add your picture, info about you, links to your blogs or band sites and generally promote yourselves and your organizations. It's based on OpenSocial which is the front runner for the industry standard on Profiles/Membership/Community so we can stop creating a new profile for every new damn site we join. It's currently being used by Google, Yahoo, Twitter, AOL, orkut, and Plaxo with many more coming soon.

There are several other very cool features that I intend to play with such as audio sharing, live text and audio chatting, and more. So, we could have a mudcat open mic night and jam sessions and store and share our songs...

Mudcat member profiles, pictures, locator, songbook etc were taken care of manually in the past. We just can't do that anymore. Something like this will replace all that and put the power of controlling it all in your hands. I hope the experiment works, because I really believe it will add what is missing from this site without all the bull of other social networking sites. Trust me.

Max, it covers the drop-down menus, and cannot be moved.

The only way I've been able to access the forum is to go via the personal page, then list of posted messages.

Otherwise, the main screen doesn't display the threads

Go Max! This puder won't quite do a test (slow, old), but go for it! I'll test in when I can and, in the meantime, trust not only you but the other folks testing along.

In the opening post, Max has allowed himself the ability to post an image - interactive at that - within an ordinary Mudcat thread.

It would be good if such a facility were extended to Mudcat users as well as administrators as happens on the various folk and world music boards hosted by Mondomix.....

Actually it's not an image, it's a <DIV> with some Javascript in it, but I don't doubt that's outlawed for the rest of us on Mudcat too, for good reasons....

OK, I joined, but I'm not liking how it links a lot of stuff automatically, and I haven't got time right now to sort out how to make it a little more private...

If you have a Google account it loads up stuff from there. It's probably best to create/update a Google account first.

It's a little frightening to see my own picture at the top of the Google box. I'd rather be hidden in the crowd. It feels so narcissistic to be up top, even though I know that Martin Ryan must be at the top of his page, and Bill D at the top of his. Maybe we're ALL narcissists...

After what people are saying about names & photos being used by other people on Facebook, I'm a bit worried about this one. Does anyone know how safe it is?

So far this Friend Connect site seems to be working, but it connects up with so much other stuff that, while you're there, click on your Google account and look at the "Dashboard" that Google put up so people can see what has been collected about them. You can edit or delete if you feel the need.

I have a thought about some of this connectedness, though. I'm seeing Mudcat items turning up on Twitter, links back to threads. They aren't music threads, they're discussions about tech and obits and such. I just wonder how people are choosing that these are the threads they want to run on Twitter? Why are these are being shared on Twitter at all? Is the person posting the most recent post also a Twitter member and deciding to share, or is it just someone hitting the orange button to see what happens? I think threads could be shared even with no new contents. And when these Twitter hits bring people to Mudcat via a lateral process, not through the home page or the forum home page, how on earth are they to know what our rules are for posting at Mudcat? I forsee a lot of oddball posts, but I also wonder, with the bots that crawl through Twitter looking for places to park spam, is this opening up a lot of our threads to more of that junk? Are the clones keeping track of this kind of thing?

Just asking--it's an interesting idea, but it is tending to open things more to the great unwashed. ;-D

Hi, tech. I haven't seen the screen with all the little photos in a while, so I haven't been able to get to Friend Connect. I had saved a bookmark a while ago, but it can't find the page any more.

And I don't remember which user-name and pass-word I used. Who do I PM for help?

Thanks,

maire-aine

hmmm.. how do you find this or use the service without coming to Max's post? All my attempts to save a link give me a 'javascript void' notice? I still am not clear on what I should do to follow and 'connect' with other Mudcatters through it.

You know, I'd really like to see a picture of Gargoyle. Gee, that's one of the main reasons I stick around - hoping that some sunny day, I'll find out who the real Gargoyle is. After all, I'm kinda fond of him.

Merry Christmas, Garg!

-Joe-

P.S. Garg, I have TWO people who want to send you copies of their CDs for your enjoyment. Just send your address to joe@mudcat.org

Ode To a gargoyle

The gargoyle guards my sullen heart
I'm safe to dwell beneath his impish grin
I watch the nighthawks dodge his winged alert
Tannins bruise his lips and secrets stay within
But lo' I hear the whipporwill when he has banished care
A trilling waterfall and laughter fills the air

by harpgirl for you know who...

By the way all, I'm still intending to implement some things from Google friend connect, just haven't had the time yet.

There are a lot of things I like about Gargoyle. And Susan Friedman
likes the bawdy songs he posts.

But hey, merry Christmas!

Carolyn Kennedy

It is Caroline, not Carolyn.

I like some of Garg's bawdy stuff also. Quite a repertoire.

Caroline is the proper and original spelling.
I abhor those parents who think they'll make their little darling different by spelling their names in a 'unique' way.
All they do is condemn the poor soul to a lifetime of explanations, and mis-spelling.
The Scots Gaels have this weird habit of christening some girls Johann, and pronouncing it Joan. Every time I see it, I think, not of a contraction of Johanna, but as the christian name of a great composer.
