22 Jun 09 - 04:14 PM (#2662316) Subject: RE: BS: 34067 Tangmere stopping at Bromley South From: Paul Burke A Fridat is the best way of coping when you have to eat your hat. A stoneblower, on the other hand, is a machine for injecting stones into voids underneath sleepers (ties over the water), and are used to complement the work done by tampers, which basically pick up the track and push the existing stones underneath the sleepers. |

22 Jun 09 - 04:14 PM (#2662317) Subject: RE: BS: 34067 Tangmere stopping at Bromley South From: Eric the Viking The stoneblower is a track ballasting device that lifts/jacks and packs the ballast as pretty high speed especially compared to doing it with a track jack and a shovel !It does it by pneumatically blowing the ballast into placeunder the sleepers. It's a really smart machine ! I saw one going through Church fenton in spring when I was down there. |

23 Jun 09 - 12:50 PM (#2662776) Subject: RE: BS: 34067 Tangmere stopping at Bromley South From: Paul Burke There's a thread above about Merchant Nay songs. We could certainly have one about West Country songs, perhaps Battle of Britain songs, Schools songs, and Lord Nelson songs. Can any other railway boast as many classes celebrated in (particularly folk) song? By theway, there seems to be a major gathering of funny machines at Derby Station- I counted 4 tampers, a ballast regulator and a stoneblower there yesterday, and that's not counting the resident rail grinding train. |

23 Jun 09 - 04:29 PM (#2662983) Subject: RE: BS: 34067 Tangmere stopping at Bromley South From: Eric the Viking Railways have been the inspiration for many songs, so they must have a legitimate place in a folk/blues music site. The first song I ever learnt to play was "Freight train". Ewan MacColl wrote a few songs about railways. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:wifqxq95ldfe~T3 There are also threads before. |

23 Jun 09 - 05:27 PM (#2663022) Subject: RE: BS: 34067 Tangmere stopping at Bromley South From: Rafflesbear Hey, perhaps we can get this thread out of the BS and into the music section !!!!! Dave Goulder is the greatest exponent of the railway song bar none IMHO - because he lived and worked on the railway as a fireman the lyrics rise to another level. None of this "freight train, freight train going so fast" or "Rock Island Line is a mighty fine line" or "the runaway train came down the track and she blew" - instead we have long narrow shovels, lengthmen, black fives, Oliver Cromwell and going home with pockets full of coal. Listening to these songs gives a real insight into railway life in steam days And he's coming down to Broadstairs !!!!! Dave Goulder website |

However when we manage to sell the house and move back to the mainland in the Lossiemouth area. I'm sure I'll find out where he's gigging. Did he go to the Scottish Mudgather? |

25 Jun 09 - 07:51 AM (#2664249) Subject: RE: BS: 34067 Tangmere stopping at Bromley South From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler There are hundreds of folk songs that mention Kings, Dukes, Saints, Stars, Castles, Halls and Manors, not to mention "Rovers" (can't recall any mentioning Granges though) so I think that the GWR is a major contender for "folk railway company". |
