We always thought that it was just a propaganda movie from the 1930s. But an analysis in this week's Lancet of previously published studies found that marijuana smokers were 40% more likely than non-smokers to develop psychotic symptoms, even when they weren't high. And the risk increased with the frequency that users toked up. A commentary published along with the article estimates that, if the findings are correct, roughly 800 cases of schizophrenia in the U.K. could be prevented each year, if no one smoked marijuana. The analysis reviews dozens of studies that looked at the rate of mental health problems among marijuana smokers. (The study, along with the editorial and a commentary, are here, on the Web site of the British newspaper the Guardian.) As the researchers themselves note, a major problem with the data is the possibility that people who are more likely to develop psychotic symptoms in the first place are also more likely to smoke marijuana. The studies parsed in the analysis went to different lengths to address this problem. Several excluded patients who showed psychotic symptoms at the outset. The results of the analysis were enough to convince the authors that the risk is real, however. And, perhaps more significantly, the findings also persuaded the editors of the Lancet, which is among the world's most influential medical journals, to reverse course on the effects of marijuana. In an commentary accompanying the study, the editors write: In 1995, we began a Lancet editorial with the since much-quoted words: "The smoking of cannabis, even long term, is not harmful to health." Research published since 1995, including [the] systematic review in this issue, leads us now to conclude that cannabis use could increase the risk of psychotic illness. … governments would do well to invest in sustained and effective education campaigns on the risks to health of taking cannabis. |

I doubt that even the most passionate legalize-pot advocate would argue that driving under the influence of BOTH alcohol and cannibis would be advisable, or defensible. It should also be noted that alcohol is only detectable while the subjet is intoxicated, and exits the system immediately and completely. Marijuana will show up in a person's urine and blood for weeks after ingestion, certainly long after any effect has long since worn off. Testing positive for pot doesn't mean that you're high at the time of the test in the same way that testing for alcohol indicates drunkenness. |

About 8 years ago a Congressman from Georgia ordered the city of DC to seal the voting result of the DC referendum on legalizing medical mariquana. When the matter went to the Court of appeals it was ordered unsealed and revealed that it passed by a landslide. Unfortunatley the law was not enacted due to more right wing shenanigans. MAYBE this time the voice of the people in DC will count for something this time. So far Massacusettes has made pot a civil matter that would give you the equivalent of a traffic ticket for having more than 4 oz. California I believe has the most/best pot via medical requests. What other states have relaxed laws regarding pot? I haven't even tasted the stuff in 15 years. I saw the movie Saving Grace last night. Its a comedy about cultivation. |

Ya' see, there was a dirt field half a mile from my house and my treat was to have my old man take me over and walk into the bar (yes, bar!!!) they had there where old pilots would hang out, knock back cold beer, talk about war, 'er whatever and take folks up for a couple bucks... I remember one of them pilots walkin' me thru a landing when I was about 9... I'm sure that I didn't land it entirely on my own but my memory is that I did land the sumabich... Fast forward to my 16th birthday and me and a couple buddies flew an old Cub down to Darlington, S.C. from Bailey's Crossroads in NoVa., made it okay, Ford's took 1,2,3 and 4 as I recall, made it back to Bailey's Crossroads and ground-looped the sumabich and broke it in half... I was in the right seat on that one so I ain't takin' full credit for wrecking the plane... And for the record, I didn't even know about cannibus then... lol... B~ |

From: 3refs When I was living in Vancouver in 81, and kind of stumbled on to an old friend from Winnipeg, who was living in S.Burnaby. We didn't even know he was living there but he showed up at my nephews funeral. After lots of "bla, bla, bla" tells us he was recently putting in a veggie garden and when he was rotor-tilling his yard, he noticed the top of wine cask(with the big finger hole). So, he picks it up and realizes the break is fresh. He gets down on his hands and knees digs around a bit and finds two clear glass wine bottles full of clear fluid(I think their called Sovereign). He digs them out and right away figures it's moonshine. He takes it to the University of B.C and has it analyzed. 160 proof, or 80% alcohol, but more importantly, safe to drink. So, he brings over a couple of bottles to the funeral reception. Now my nephew was an active Sea Cadet, so there was some "pomp and circumstance" with his Commanding Officer, Sub Lt Pearson, and several others from the C.A.F. in attendance. Being in the Navy, Sub Lt Pearson didn't heed our warning about the "shine" and proceeded to show us how "she" could "drink with the best of em". We refer to that day as "The Day We Sank The Canadian Navy". We had to put her to bed!!! |
