Tech: Reliable and cheap web-host required

My web-site relating to UK Canal Songs has just exceeded its allocated web-space 200Mb with its host Demon. Faced with an unpleasant e-mail and the threat that they will charge me an additional £55 per year if I don't delete some files, I am looking for an alternative hosting service.

Reliability is important, but so is the cost, as I pay for this site myself, don't want to have adverts on it if possible, and am about to retire from paid employment.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Ian

See my PM, but the people I have a reseller account with also have individual hosting which is how I started. Webhosting UK. I've had no trouble with them, responsive support when I needed help, and I've noticed their PHPMyadmin database admin was much faster that the same feature on PlusNet, when I moved part of a site from one to the other.

www.34sp.com have come highly recommended in other places, but I've never used them.

I host 30 or so websites, the biggest of which is 10GB of files. After some really bad experiences with UK hosting companies my sites are now on hostgator.com which is in Texas and powered by renewable energy sources. The pricing is fantastic and the support much better than I got from UK hosting providers.

I guess you'd need a Hatchling plan at $4.95 per month.

I use Supanames to host my websites. If you choose their Linux hosting package it costs around £16.00 a year for 500mb. There is no need to choose the Windows package (which is way more expensive) unless you are running complicated PHP/SQL type web pages. You do have to buy the package in two year blocks, so cirra £32.00 is the initial outlay. I've found them very reliable and the one problem I've had in the last six years was sorted out very quickly.

Thanks folks. Plenty of food for thought here and some very helpful suggestions.

One hosting site I would NOT recommend is Startlogic. Their rates were attractive, but I experienced a lot of outages and when I tried to contact support I often was unable to get through. I finally cancelled the service.

I use 1and1.co.uk - consistently reliable and voted one of the best ISPs over many years - £8.99 per month. Huge storage space and 500 email addresses!

I spend £100 a year with these people
http://www.lumison.net/front.html

It gets me web-hosting for my personal business, web-mail, POP e-mail, and (best of all) human beings on the end of a telephone to help when I'm confused!

I use Secure Web Hosting for my three websites. Five years now, and never a problem, nor any price increases. Amazing control panels, plenty of space and bandwidth, helpful for beginners. Recommend them.

I also use 1and1.co.uk for two domains and I've found them reliable. I have not had any problems so I don't know what their support is like. They take care of re-registration of domain names you register through them which saves me having to remember to do it.

Their prices are reasonable as well

Why don't you host the music somewhere else the site itself is tiny?

I have used freeuk for many years for a site which has cost nothing but that is under 25mb - well over a million visitors so doesn't seem to be restrictive on traffic

I use madasafish as an ISP and that also has 100MB of space free with it

If there are no copyright issues there are places that you can merrily use for free to stream and play your music from - you may have to sacrifice a little in terms of presentation etc

For example I sometimes send this to people about the local pub we play music in - Flaxton music - which is for free and causes me no hassle. Not as pretty as yours!

Free online storage amazes me - I think I have about 60Gb and could easily bump that up dramatically if I needed it

60Gb of online storage is easy to provide. The amount of data transfer bandwidth for a busy web site that big is another matter. Many personal sites don't get a lot of traffic but if it's full of media (pictures, music, video) it can suddenly get popular and the bandwidth becomes the limiting (or expensive) factor.

You are right that using separate web space is a possible temporary measure to get round a storage limit. If you need much more though, it's probably cheaper to just purchase more space on the same account.
