Lyr Req/Add: Eleanor (from 'Lum and Abner')

Subject: need music/lyrics
From: ludy@shelby.net

I am looking for public domain copies of the music to an English song, that goes something like this: "Past three o'clock, on a cold, frosty morning, "Past three o'clock, good morrow master's all."

It was also done by one group as a type of Christmas Carol.

Incidentally, I needed also some information on a song called "Eleanor," which was the themesong of the LUM AND ABNER radio program for a while. Where is the music available? Is it public domain?

Any information that could be supplied about either subject would be appreciated.

"Eleanor" by Jessie L. Deppen was the first themesong for the LUM AND ABNER Radio Show. I would like to have the music, if available, and if in public domain. If not, could I find the song "Evalena" composed and performed by Sybil Chisolm Bock. It replaced "Eleanor" as the Lum and Abner themesong in 1941 and was the themesong of five of the six Lum and Abner movies produced by RKO. I would like to know if it is public domain by now. A Yahoo/Alta Vista search for lum+abner turned up 73 references, including the National Lum and Abner Society. That might be a good place to start. Since Lum and Abner were Arkansas boys, it is possible that the Ozark Cultural Resource Center archives might have the sheet music that you are asking for. At the moment, though, searching for it would be difficult, as they are still recovering from a recent remodeling, and many items are still packed away.

Note: I sent this once, but for some reason, the new screen ended after Ludy's original post, making it impossible to read my response, or more importantly, to make any new responses. So I went back in time (Isn't it amazing how we can do that on the internet!!??) and posted it again.

Yeah, Dale, but you left out the quote marks at the end of the URL both times. The quotes are optional, but you have to either have them on both sides of the URL in the link, or not at all.

Eleanor - Early Lum and Abner theme music

"To my dear friend Rae Eleanor Ball

ELEANOR (A Serenade)
Words & Music by Jessie L. Deppen
(copyright 1914, 1918)

The birds of the forest are calling
From the wild-wood far a-way ----
While the night shades so softly are falling
At the close ---- of the day; ----
Each breeze brings a message from love-land,
Fond and true, dear, fond and true, ----
With each spark from the dew,
My fond heart, dear, calls to you, ---- calls to you, ----

The moon is creeping high o'er the hill,
Nature is sleeping, the world is still, ----
Come, ope your window ---- cast one sweet rose,
A rose to prove, to prove your love.
My heart is sighing for you, my own,
With love undying for you alone; ----
Beneath your window ---- and star-lit skies, ----
I wait the love-light, the love-light that beams in your bright eyes.----

Then come while the nightbirds are calling,
As the moonbeams brightly shine, ----
And we'll wander thro' love-land together,
Dreaming love dreams so divine; ----
I'll sing you sweet songs of a love, dear,
That will linger evermore,----
And this big world will seem but a beautiful dream,
Eleanor, Eleanor. ------------"
