Cropton (Nr Pickering) Fest Aug7-9th UK

22 Jun 09 - 06:11 AM (#2661964)
Subject: Cropton (Nr Pickering) Fest Aug7-9th UK
From: Banjiman

A new festival (and absolutely nothing to do with the ill fated Pickering Folk Festival!) except being near by.

Acts confirmed so far include: Wendy Arrowsmith - The Arrowsmiths & Joolz Cavell - Roscoe La Belle - Brother Crow - Graham Brotton - Emma Forman - Richard Grainger & The Darklands Band - Shirley Higton - Landermason - Kim Ralls - Stormcrow - Ethan Thomas- Penni Maclaren Walker

I would expect there will be plenty of informal singarounds and sessions as well.

Just £20 + £5 camping for the weekend!

Details here: Cropton Folk & Roots 2009

Apparently camping is in the Orchard, which sounds extremely pleasant!

Anyone fancy it?

Is there not a very fine Micro Brewery there?
I seem to remember being even grumpier than usual, as I was driving.

Folk festivals in breweries seem like a growing (and very welcome) trend. We're also going to the Moonbeams Wold Top Festival in July at the Wold Top Brewery near Wold Newton in (you guessed it) the Yorkshire Wolds.

Hazel, more of a Saltburn warm up really!

It should be a fun, good value weekend. I didn't know there was a brewery there, even better.

Pete, who's bringing the barbie?

They also have a more "rocky" music festival in that pub in November (lots of bikers) - we went there for my birthday last year so it must be around Nov. 26th. Maybe it was me and Ossonflags doing a spot on the stage there last year that inspired this folky version!

:-)

It is the home of the Cropton Brewery and they also do good food and have nice accommodation.

Hi Guys, the folk festival is actually AT the brewery...and the beer is great...

...I'm on sorting a quick website out for Richard Grainger (who is organising the festival), and for the moment, we are using the old Roots North website for the hosting.

You can find it at:

http://www.rootsnorth.co.uk

Not much there at the moment, but keep checking back...

Hope this helps,
Graeme,

No, keep this one going Paul.

It seems that word about this festival is spreading like wild-fire.
It was on the lips of many of my folkie friends at Saddleworth FF recently and also at Durham last weekend and it sounds like many at Hardraw were suggesting it to friends.

So like a rolling stone gathering moss, word is getting out and it's picking up momentum. So don't dally people.

Get on the "Cropton Folk and Roots Festival 2009" web site and book yer tickets.

Only £26 for the whole weekend, including concerts, camping and booking fee.
Now that's what I call really good value for money!

Just to remind ya. It's on 7-9 August 2009 (only 1 week and 3 days away). It is set in the beautiful grounds and pub of The Cropton Brewery (smashing range of real ales and food),a few miles west of Pickering,North Yorkshire.

There is a very good line up of artists (check website for full details)and the large rambling brewery pub will be pulsating with excellent singarounds and musician playarounds.

This is a new Festival and from what I know about the number and sheer quality of people who have said they are going to it, it's going to be a little cracker which I am really looking forward to.

Just one question from people in the know. Is the pub hosting this festival called 'The Cropton Brewery' or does it have another name?
I called at the pub a few years ago on me way back from Whitby Moor & Cost Festival and thought it was called ''The Cropton Arms' or something. So can someone please clarify so we all know what to look out for. Many thanks.

Get yer tickets booked and I'll see ya there folkie friends.

If there are going to be singarounds or whatever taking place in the pub itself, I hope they'll relax their rule about not letting children in anywhere except the conservatory because Hols wants to sing a song with us.

From: Soldier boy

Thanks theleveller and Banjiman for letting me know the pub is called "The New Inn"".

Now just two more questions for you so that all coming to this festival are in the know :

Is The New Inn pub in the same grounds as the Cropton Brewery and therefore an integral part of the festival? Sorry if I sound a bit dim on this point but it's not clear from the website or previous postings here.

And if The New Inn is an intregal part of the festival, will it welcome and be the host for, singarounds and musician playarounds all over the weekend?

I hope you can answer in the affirmative because on my last and only visit to this fine hostelry it looked to be a large rambling pub with plenty of space to accomodate all kinds of sessions.
At least that is how I recall it ,but memory is getting somewhat addled these days!

Also, it was obviously a popular eating venue, so could the dining experience interfere with or prevent good sessions getting going in the venue? Sorry. That's three questions!!
Many thanks.

Chris

Hi SB.

The Brewery & The New Inn are pretty much all one according to their website .

I don't know what the set up is for sessions only the promise that there will be some.

There is a contact email on the website (link somewhere above). Why not drop the Grainger's (Richard and Jeanette) who are organising the fest and then post on here to let us all know! I would have to do the same thing thing to find out.

See you there.

This part of the world seems to be blighted by cancelled festivals. What's going on?!!
There was Pickering festival last year and now Cropton, just a few miles west of Pickering!
I don't know any history behind Cropton but sincerely hope that there is no connection or link to Pickering in terms of organisers etc because many ticket holders, stall holders and local tradespeople etc are still owed refunds/money from last years Pickering Festival!

Tell you what, if anybody is thinking about holding a festival next year in Pickering,Cropton or anywhere within a 10 mile radius of those towns/villages forget it!!!

I very much doubt that anyone would touch it with a barge pole, which is a great shame 'cause the Cropton festival had particular appeal to me and I was looking forward to it.
Bummer!

Oh that is a shame - I was really hoping to get to that one after missing Moonbeams Wold Top & Ryedale this year. I suppose I feel a bit guilty for not buying a tcket in advance now.

Looks like the Berlingo may be staying unslept in until Shrewsbury at the end of the month. Maybe e will take a trip to London to see the Futurist exhibition at Tate Modern instead which we have just found out about after watching the Culture Show tonight. They didn't write any good tunes though & the beer won't be as good!

Subject: RE: Cropton (Nr Pickering) Fest Aug7-9th UK

From the website........

"Although there has been a lot of interest in our new festival, advance ticket sales have been relatively low. We have checked the long – range weather forecast and the forecast for the next weekend is for heavy rain. This will mean that ticket sales on the door will also be low as the Festival is an outdoor event. The site we are planning to use is already wet, due to the persistent wet weather we have been experiencing, and it looks like there is a lot more to come, which will exacerbate the problem.

For these reasons, we are unable to go ahead with the festival this year. We do plan to run a Roots North festival in 2010. Tickets will be available immediately for the 2010 Festival and we're sure, that with a longer lead time, it will be a huge success like our other ventures, Seafest and Ryedale Folk Weekend".

Subject: RE: Cropton (Nr Pickering) Fest Aug7-9th UK

Thanks for that Banjiman and Folkiedave,I appreciate that.

I am satisfied that it it has been cancelled for genuine reasons and that there is no connection at all to last years Pickering Festival.

I think that you should sue the Met office for incorrect seasonal weather forecasts that had us all expecting a dry 'barbeque' summer!!

Problem is that with two festivals cancelled in the same vicinity over the last two years, who on earth will take any festival in this neck of the woods seriously ever again.
I suspect that everyone would be very wary and will not want to touch it with a barge pole and will be very reluctant to shell out any cash in advance.

The only way to salvage something from this is to at least put something on this year by way of an alternative for all those who had bought tickets and put it in their diary.

To that effect I have emailed The New Inn in Cropton and suggested that they accomodate an "Alternative Cropton "fringe" Festival 2009" in the pub for singarounds and musician playarounds on the same weekend and provide full campsite facilities in their grounds over the weekend.

So we'll wait to see what happens.

What a huge shame, we were really looking forward to this. I, too, will echo what Paul said about Richard and Jeanette - they organise great festivals and it is greatly to their credit that they have taken the brave step of cancelling before problems arose. We bought the first tickets and have no worries at all about getting a refund, although we would prefer to let it ride and have tickets for Osmotherley instead.

As far as the credibility of festivals in the Pickering area - I have no problem as Ryedale this year and last were brilliant and so were Roots North and Osmotherley last year. If they are on again next year, we'll be there.

Hey, I bet it's muddy at Cambridge and we got into serious problems with the caravan at the Hardraw Gathering last weekend.

BTW Paul, we owe you a barbecue - will you take a rain check?:)

Soldier Boy. Yep, we have been thinking we won't accept any bookings in the Pickering area on the 2nd weekend in August! It does seem to be doomed! Seriously, don't let this bad luck put you off Richard's events.

Wonder what the pub will say about an informal get together?

Whilst having the utmost sympathy for disappointed folkies, my sympathy really is for Richard as we all know how hard he works organising numerous succesful events elsewhere in Ryedale, but at the end of the day he has done the honourable thing and let people know in good time.
We know how difficult it is to bring all the threads of a festival together and wish him all the best in future ventures, of which I am sure there will be many.
Please don't associate him with the sheister who (organised !!) the 2008 Pickering Festival as that would be an insult to a man who lives and breathes music.

A bit.....

I'm not sure what the full line-up is but we're playing (Blind Summat!) and so is Wendy Arrowsmith solo. Richard Grainger will be on in some form or another and some of the other artists who were scheduled to play at Cropton have been offered a slot at Osmotherley.

The main concerts take place in the Village Hall and 2 of the pubs in the village were also involved last year with sessions, singarounds and some acts. There wasn't a festival campsite last year but there are 2 commercial sites in the village. I'm not sure what the plans are for this year yet.

Anything else you need to know and I'll do my best to get you an answer.

Hi Carol. No, no reply as yet from The New Inn.

I emailed them from their website on their 'contacts' page but I never know if they work so I also emailed them from my personal email address as well.

But, as I said, no reply from them as yet.

It might be an idea if a few others email them and ask if they are willing to host an informal "Fringe" festival over the same weekend for singarounds and musician playarounds AND provide camping for caravans, campervans and tents with access to toilets/washrooms (or perhaps just portaloos with sinks might do the job if pub access is not allowed over night!!) and a water supply.

The more who enquire, the more they might realise that there actually could be some demand for this and that it could go some way to replace some of the lost custom they were expecting from the full Cropton Folk and Roots Festival.

Feel free to contact them. The more the merrier.

Their Email address is : info@newinncropton.co.uk

Good luck.

Chris

That's one of the reasons we're trying to coninue with it on an informal basis - - I can only think of Lechlade at the moment

Still nothing heard from The New Inn, so it looks like they are not interested, which is a great shame!

And even if they expressed interest at this stage I think it is too late now to spread the word and muster enough people to make it worthwhile.

Hopefully next year will be a different story.

That is a shame - I've got Friday and Monday booked as holiday so we'll have to find something else to do. I must admit, I was a little unsure about the New Inn as a venue because, when we stopped off there for lunch earlier this year, we were told that, as we had our 9-year old daughter with us, we could only eat in the conservatory, which had absolutely no atmosphere at all. Children are not allowed in the main part of the pub. Needless to say, we went elsewhere.

Ah well, roll on Osmotherley - great pubs, fantastic village hall venue and, if it's like last year, brilliant fun. See you there?

I received a cheque today as refund for my weekend ticket and camping at Cropton.
So well done to all the folks at Festival On The Moor. That was very quick and efficient and very much appreciated.
I will have a look at the Osmotherley Gathering and might well put the money back into that.
What are camping arrangements like for the Osmotherley gathering?

SB.

I posted this above:

A bit.....

"I'm not sure what the full line-up is but we're playing (Blind Summat!) and so is Wendy Arrowsmith solo.

Anything else you need to know and I'll do my best to get you an answer."

I'll try and find out more for you.

Cheers

Paul

Tnank you Banjiman

Soldier boy (sorry! - forgot to log in)

PS: Banjiman, as you seem to know something about 'The Osmotherley Gathering' would you like to start a new thread for this so that others in the know can add information as well and we can start to build up a good picture of this weekend and to promote it.

If there are singaround and musician playarounds in the two pubs in Osmotherley it sounds like it could be the sort of weekend that I would really enjoy.
Many thanks.

Soldier boy

Therre's a good campsite called Cote Ghyll about half a mile out of the village. We'll be staying there. Haven't got the number handy but just google it.
