26 Jun 09 - 06:41 PM (#2665579) Subject: RE: Folkway Reunion Lui Collins Guy Wolff H From: maeve I was a customer in the earliest days, then worked drinks & desserts under Widdie. She gave me a generous dinner with dessert and admission to the night's concert. When we reopened with David Pyle and then Susan & David Lord, I did lots of jobs; garden work, cleared tables, held fussy babies so their mums could eat, diningroom manager, giftshop manager, and emcee. I made the new banner to replace the Lady banner, and another one of my own to use when Tony Bird played there. I remember the night "Mad Dog" Don Wright played his last gig with Greg Brown, and the one and only time Gordon Bok played, Archie, Cilla, and Ray Fisher, Lui Collins of course, Garnet...so many wonderful nights! There were many wonderful concerts and contra dances in the Nelson Town Hall then, too. Good memories. maeve |
26 Jun 09 - 07:53 PM (#2665618) Subject: RE: Folkway Reunion Lui Collins Guy Wolff H From: Guy Wolff I remember both Peter Bellamy and Alister Anderson played there (on separate nights) . Funny I had a little following by then and people were saddened that it was Guy Von Duser playing one Saturday night not me ...that is till he started playing . All was well !!!! It would be fun to get a list from Jonathan Hall on all the great acts that came through the Folkway . Did Odetta play while you were there ?? |

29 Jun 09 - 11:49 AM (#2667161) Subject: RE: Folkway Reunion Lui Collins Guy Wolff H From: GUEST,Craig Werth Just found this thread and I am very grateful for it... I played at the Folkway a number of times including for the first fund-raiser Widdie and Jonathan had -- before the barn was built. The Folkway was incredibly formative for me. At one point Widdie asked me if I wanted to serve as host and I, for some crazy reason, didn't get back to her until it was too late. This is one of those "what if..." moments. BUT I am proud to be a tiny part of the legacy. People remember the Folkway everywhere I go. The Folkway... all my best to those who knew and loved her... |

30 Jun 09 - 05:24 PM (#2668343) Subject: RE: Folkway Reunion Lui Collins Guy Wolff H From: GUEST,Matt I'd be there if not on the West Coast...just no way to do this. Guy, this is the music I grew up on in CT - I was 13 or 14 when I first hear you and Lui's playing. Started playing acoustic partially because of that - you put a lot of music into a song. Will Bill Lauf be there as well, playing with Horace? All the best; if you record it and sell copies, I'd be interested! It'll be a great evening. west coast matt |

30 Jun 09 - 09:45 PM (#2668530) Subject: RE: Folkway Reunion Lui Collins Guy Wolff H From: maeve I want to attend this reunion concert as much as I'd like to be at the Apple Hollow Festival. Can't do either one. I wonder if Bill and Eileen will be there, or any of the wait staff? Bill was the chef and used to bring my dinner out to me so I wouldn't miss any of the show. Typical kindness as experienced at The Folkway. maeve |
01 Jul 09 - 01:16 AM (#2668602) Subject: RE: Folkway Reunion Lui Collins Guy Wolff H From: Guy Wolff Well this is my last post before heading up . Wednesday in the AM I will make it up to Lui's and we will drive up to Nelson together. Lots to catch up on . Wednesday evening we will start jamming and see who plays what with whom. I think this part will be as much fun for me as the concert. I love Horace Williams touch on guitar. I first heard Lui playing with Horace at the old Wooden Goblet in Waterbury . They were an amazing duo . Jonathan Hall is a very sensitive and intuitive musician. He is one of the easiest people I have ever played with . Lui wants us all to do things that are new to us now as well as the old favorites . Funny most of my newest work is looking back at the Copper family and Peter Bellamy and June Tabor and Martin (the great) Carthy . I would love to get Lui to play The Blackest Crow with me .. I look forward to seeing tons of old friends and new on Thursday . I will add to this afterwards for the fun of it .. All the best , Guy |

03 Jul 09 - 02:18 PM (#2670822) Subject: RE: Folkway Reunion Lui Collins Guy Wolff H From: Guy Wolff Well this was a magic time for all involved in the playing and singing along . That means ; everyone . The great energy of folk music being in a town (Nelson New Hampshire) for decades on centuries makes all the difference in the energy around the music. We had a party the night before where everyone played tons of different things . On the morning of the concert we got to pairing down to what worked for each song and no more. The wonderful thing of playing with musicians of this level is no one puts in more then adds to the song .It was like a recording session. Most times less really is a lot more . Being 30 years since some of us had played together smiling along sometimes is enough . As was said the concert was sold out . Maybe a fifth of the room had worked or helped at the Folkway . They were all asked to stand. It was really a coming together of what the Folkway was. No pins were dropped but we would have heard them if they had been . I play a bit louder when Im leading so I was glad that I only had two songs to lead. I did My Dearest Dear ( The song related to The blackest Crow ) and because we had such a room of singers I led "The Country Life " because I had to hear that group sing it .. The Watersons would love this crowd . Even with a full room I could hear our own annimatarra like a bell, singing . We played an extra hour for over half the audience and got to driving home at midnight . Lui had a recording session today so I drove on to Litchfield . Nelson to home was four hours so Im a bit light headed today . The list of who played the Folkway must be put together . It is a wonderful story and I hope its told and soon . All the best to all here , Guy |
