Region 1 DVD problems

I don't know if anyone may be able to help with this, but....

My daughter has a laptop, and a few nights back she watched a DVD from the library. We're over in the UK, and the DVD was from the USA, which she hadn't realised at the time. It came up with an 'option' stating that if you wanted to play this DVD you had to click 'Region 1'

So she did.

Now, she can't get out of Region 1, and is unable to play UK DVDs. She's searched and searched on Google for some info, but without success.

Does anyone have any ideas how she can remove Region 1 and get back to the UK version?

Thanks for any help you may be able to give.

Lizzie

Don't know the finer points, but there have been discussions previously on Mudcat including people in the USA wanting to play UK discs. Try a search.
The main warning I recall is that DVD-Drives on computers will change between Regions only a handful of times but once that small number of changes have been used, it will only play whatever was the final change.
I recall someone in the USA keeping one computer for playing UK discs and a second for USA ones.
Main advice for playing is use a multi region DVD player not a computer.
Quack!

Thank you Geoff.

She only used the Region 1 option once, but it seems to have screwed up everything instantly. Seems it's maybe read the first change as the final change. Darn it.

There is a very fine little piece of software that can be downloaded, free. It is called "DVD region killer". It works.

The last version I used was on Win98SE and I do not know if there are XP or Vista versions.

If your daughter uses 'restore' points it may be worth trying a Restore to an earlier date.
I'm sure better advice will be along shortly!

Cheers

I think the DVD region thing is built into the firmware of the DVD unit and nothing to do with the computer as such, so reset points or re-installing are not a solution.
Quack!
