13 Jul 99 - 01:42 AM (#94661) Subject: Tune Add: MEETING OF THE WATERS (Thomas Moore)^^ From: John in Brisbane I hope I never forget the beautiful story told in this Forum as to how Thomas Moore came to write 'Endearing Young Charms' - whoever did that yarn please take a bow?
I don't recall ever hearing 'The Meeting Of The Waters' actually sung, but here is the tune. I know that the original words are qhite haunting, and will only take a Thomas Moore fan a few minutes to find and post.
The North American version is in the DT, and has a repeated line in each stanza. To make Dick's life more interesting I will post the tune for that in a separate thread.

13 Jul 99 - 04:18 AM (#94677) Subject: Tune Add: OLD HEAD OF DENNIS and BOYS OF KILKENNY From: A rather heavy hand has reworked the tune above. The song is in the first issue of Stevenson and Moore's 'A Selection of Irish Melodies' and the tune there is given as below in 'Sources of Traditional Irish Music', 1998. (Original edition of 1st 8 of 10 parts are in the Library of Congress, but I failed to copy the tune from part 1). A variant of the tune is that for "The Boys of Kilkenny". (In DT without tune.) M. Kelly printed single sheet songs from 1802-11, and it isn't known for certain which of these two versions of the tune was published earliest. The single sheet issue of "The Boys of Kilkenny" is in the Folger Shakespeare Library. Note after the first verse the tune changes at the "X" to a different ending.

THE MEETING OF THE WATERS
There is not in the wide world a valley so sweet
Yet it was not that nature had shed o'er the scene
'Twas that friends, the belov'd of my bosom were near
Sweet vale of Avoca! How calm could I rest Regards ^^ HTML line breaks added in place of paragraph marks. --JoeClone, 12-Jul-02. |

13 Jul 99 - 09:01 AM (#94706) Subject: RE: TUNE ADD/LYRICS REQ:Meeting of The Waters From: Joe Offer John in Brisbane, did I see you say you are going to start a second thread for an alternate tune for "Meeting of the Waters"? You really wouldn't want to do that, would you? Why? "One song, one thread" seems to be the best way to avoid losing things. -Joe Offer, grumpy 'cause it's too darn hot in Sacramento- |

13 Jul 99 - 07:45 PM (#94895) Subject: RE: TUNE ADD/LYRICS REQ:Meeting of The Waters From: John in Brisbane Joe, given the feedback above I don't think I would wish to perpetuate the version of the tune that I posted. I was wishing to elaborate that there is a separate song in the DT called 'The Meeting of the Waters of The Hudson and Erie'. That song has a slightly different construction. I will instead start a BS thread - *grin* - slightly grumpy after being up with a sick child in the cold air last night. Truly!
