Deb Cowan/John Roberts sing for supper Sept.3,4&5

01 Jul 09 - 10:39 AM (#2668924)
Subject: Gig Help: Anglo and DebC House Concert?
From: DebC

Hi all,

Anglo (John Roberts) and I will be carpooling out to Illinois for the Fox Valley Folkmusic and Storytelling Festival, Sept. 6 and 7. We would love to come and sing for you along our way to Chicago and maybe even on our way back. We figure it would take us two days to get to the Windy City (John drives fast) and two days back to the Northeast, so we are looking at Sept. 3-4 and we could even do a concert Sept. 5 in the Chicago area.

We have a very tentative date in Michigan for Sep. 4 and a confirmed date in State College for Sept. 9.

Any help that you can give would be greatly appreciated. If you are not familiar with our music, you can go to John Robert's website for information about him.

Thank you,
Debra Cowan

If you can get these two for a house concert DO IT! You will be in for a real treat.

They are two of our favourite performers here in Maine but we've never got the two of them together here.

You do no want to miss a chance to have either or both of these musical treasures in your home. Maybe Mick knows someone. He is pretty tied up at the moment himself.

Ah ha!! I found the other half of Mitch and Robyn! Very nice to meet you.

My brother, David Strassman tours in NZ and Australia a lot and I have often thought that I should hitch a ride with him ;-)

Thanks for the offer, Robyn. That's two gig offers in In your area. Unforunately they are a few thousand miles apart.

Best,
Deb

Do you think they'd allow us to sing English drinking songs and sea chanteys at the truck stops along I-80?

I do think ya oughter sing in Cleveland, John, it's been way too long & the only time I see you is at Fox Valley. Just remember I put my bid in before you get hit up by Pittsburgh and Highland of Ohio and all those other folks, K?

Oh yeah, and remember I've got all those incriminating pictures of you and Katy Early from a few years back...

We've just confirmed September 4. We'll be doing an evening of traditional Maritime Music along with Tom Kastle at Foundry Hall in South Haven, MI.

We also have a possible concert in Chicago on Sept. 5. Details will follow.

There's some enthusiasm in Cleveland - having a date for sure would be a help. I send John a pm with the gory contact details & DebVanK mention that DebraC had sent the "email before yours" saying I was plotting a house concert and looking for places.

can we, can we, huh? Pretty please?

I'd be incredibly delighted if there were Mudcatters in the area who could come. I've likely met a number of yez without knowing you were Mudcat folks. John has tentatively said he's up for perhaps having a singing session after the concert. I'm not putting this on any of the PR I'm sending out, and only mentioning it to traditional singers and their fans in the area as a possibility. I know it's a weeknight, but it's the summer, yanno?

I'm really working on my Kipling now...

Deb - did you check out Molly and the Tinker's house concert series?
They're in the greater Chicago area.

I don't have the information right at hand, but I can dig it out for you.

I'm starting to think the reason that trad music is so scarce in Cleveland is because there are no other Mudcatters here.

Oh, tell me it ain't so! Must be SOME other folks who should come and see this wonderful pairing of performers, dagnabbit.

Tonight's the night- there should be 16 or so discerning souls who'll have a grand time of a Thursday night, at least.

I think they've been well fed, Supper and breakfast, nearly in keeping with the delightful concert they gave in order TO get fed on the way to Festival.

Last night's Cleveland houseconcert was a rousing success, with a range of hard core traditional folkies and singers to a trio of church ladies who "go to interesting things." John & Debra took turns, and the back-and-forth surging and waning of subjects (hanging started the evening off) to stream of consciousness to lack of concsciousness ("If I'd known I was going to do this, I'd have worked it up!") was much like the best of a festival workshop. Concertina and guitar were on a par with acapella renditions - something we get very very VERY little of in Cleveland. The range of kinds and styles of songs in these two performer's repertoire is more than passingly awesome, just being able to pull things out of the air. For folks who had recordings, in particular John's new solo album, while they weren't shy about having recordings for sale at the half. NEVER ONCE did either of them say "this is off my new/old/amazingly fine recording" as a song intro. It was all about the joy of sharing songs.

WOOT! what a night!

End of the evening found us supping in a pub with some local performers. We got the pub to turn off the sound so Dermot and John could have at "Lowlands" with the ten at the table chiming in.

This was about as much fun as one can have on a Thursday night. Michigan, Illinios and PA are in for a great time!
