Just to inform our many friends and fan that 'ulls favourite sauna and live music venue is closed for the foreseeable future.

That means all Punch The Horse gigs in there are cancelled

Very sad time for us, have lots of lovely memories of the old place, met and played with loads of great people over the last twelve years.

Our love and thanks to: Pete Dean, Oakley, Nikki Williamson, Greg 9Skipjack) Mr.Fromull, John Smith and our dear departed friend Rich Wastling.

Never been described as venerable before. Shame about DN's - is/was it part of a chain then?

Was Nellie durty as in not washing etc

or durty when it comes to sex

or something else

Won't be many places to play soon.

Still it might get communities to support their Village Halls.

Rotten news. I understand that it would have been a possible venue for some of the Shanty Festival stuff as well.

I've been watching them pull down Pepi's this week, not a pub I frequented but it's always sad to see one completely disappear, even if it does slightly improve the view from my living room. The Minerva is still shut, Oberon is an estate agent's office, Earl de Grey has been closed for yonks. I'm obviously not drinking enough!

Les, is Durty Nellie's just down the street from the Transportation Museum? I can't recall if I saw Durty Nellie's or not when you gave me my tour of Hull, but I think I saw it.
Bill Sables hustled me out of Hull before sundown, so I didn't get to see any of Hull's fabled night life. Got to see the loo and the lightship, and the fish trails on the sidewalks.

Hi there

I had a few gigs there and was looking forward to a few more (including next friday)
I've been trying to contact Chris there but no response. ditto the priory, which had booked me in August.

I've just called and spoken to Alan, who confirmed there would be no music and that chris had left/the pub had gone into liquidation.

If anyone has any further information about the pub and about the priory, please could you contact me at
mynameallonewordatdial.pipex.com
thanks in advance

The Old Pubs - Johnny Handle

Well, when I was a lad, a pub was a pub,
Mahogany tables, sawdust floor,
Nothing fancy, plain enough,
But they don't build pubs like that any more.

They're knockin' 'em down
The old pubs,
Around the town
The old pubs,
Plastic's all the go.

Well, the landlord kept in his cellar well
A pint both heavy and strong,
A place to share your troubles lads
And a place for a bloody good song

Weddings, funerals, births and all,
We wished them all the best.
Good times, bad times, war and peace,
But the old pubs stood the test

But now here all the things have changed,
And the streets are flattened down.
And the people in the pubs have moved away
Out to the edge of town,

Joe - yes that's the one. Not an old traditional pub, but nevertheless a good one and a provider of decent music.

Les. I'm sure that you are doing your bit with the drinking but Mick going teetotal probably was the trigger - in fact I'm worried about the whole british brewing industry!

Not played there for a year , or so, but had some great nights playing in Nellies over the years as part of the duo, Blackbush, including 3 times packed to the rafters on Paddy's day met some great characters there - a great shame. Anyone remember the other Durty Nellies that Chris's brother ran in Cottingham ?

I remember it well. I played there 3 or 4 times with False McCoy around 1998-99, qlso used to drink there quite often. Still have a tot glass that I was given by the boss.

It's been taken over by Alan & Chrissie (formerly at the Black Boy and now at Walter's bar). The beer should be better. Unlikley to have live music, I'm afraid.

Dunno about the beer the Guinness was always superb when Chris had it.Punch The Horse played the Cottingham venue on one very memorable occasion

Talked to JJ the new guy yesterday, he said he had been approached by lots of people - Musos - about the live music in Durty Nellies. He could not say if they would have live muic or no; but it could be a possibillity for the future.

I took a summer stroll round Hull Marina last Saturday evening with my hubby, saw The Green Bricks overspill, Pepis rubble, the boarded up Baltic Wharf(?), Minerva, (still advertising Sunday roast), the 'osswash', being used for an act of nature by a horde of junior females (DISGUSTING ARTICLES) who spilled out of a stretch 'wagon'.... then we ventured towards the old town .
I feel so sorry for some of this world's youth where it appears important (to them) to be seen in a complete mess, allegedly enjoying the deafening din pumped out at them... (you can tell me I'm getting old - I am now 51).
They'll never know what's been lost to their future. Unfortunately they'll probably not miss it but the original pubs, with their varied layouts and personalities, 'REAL live talented singers and musos being treated as little more than background noise. There's no attempt at 'Best of Order'to listen and appreciate the effort made.
I know, we don't all like the same stuff, and the recession is biting hard...(one last bitch coming up) but the amount of moneysquandered ( Hell, I'll stop now..) Suffice to say I'm hopeful the Sea Fever Festival will have some location available - maybe the space to the west of the minerva pier could be commandeered... and of course fingers and toes are crossed that Minerva will be returned to us... and Durty Nellies too. PS It was used as the opening night venue for SF last year.

While trawling the internet I came across this thread and thought I'd update it to avoid any confusion or loss of custom for the establishment.

Nellies Bar (formerly Durty Nellies) is now open for business, and has and CLEAN!

Rather than the usual suspects, the bar now stocks a wide range of Real ales and real ciders which is very welcome in Hull's old town.

Well done to the new licencees for breathing a new lease of life into this historic old pub.

Cider Mike.

Cost of the live music made the last owner go bust I believe......So! its very unlikely.
The great news is that the beer is excellent now, no more vinegar brews.

Sad loss indeed, Hulls premier musical sauna very unique in its way.I have loads of happy memories of this place.

The new owners say they are doing OK without live music; St Patricks day this year they even had recorded piped music - they have removed the stage, so cant see a return to how it was before. This is a great pity as there were plans to make this into a bigger and more varied live music venue; something this city sorely needed.

Dont know about "vinegar brews", Chris would be delighted to hear that I am sure since he took great pride in the quality of all the brews he sold.I played there for thirteen years and never heard any complaints.Certainly the amount of Guinness he/we shifted spoke for itself.

No live music, but good good and it's own brewery too. Also, it will be re-named Lion & Key.
