BS: Parrotheads! Any here?

Description:

Hardcore Jimmy Buffet Fans.

The common stereotype is of a person wearing a Hawaiian shirt, flip-flops and board shorts, or a grass skirt and a coconut bra while drinking a margarita. Many fans are members of Parrot head clubs. The general theme of being a Parrothead is one of relaxation, even while working. Some prefer the spelling "Parrotthead," reflecting the double "t" in Buffett.

The more "professional" aspect is to wear high-end tropical vacation clothing, though this is likely seen by many as a departure from the "true tenets" of being a Parrot head as it references a more expensive lifestyle than is commonly associated with being a tropical beach bum.

I lived on the west coast of Florida when Buffet hit it big. You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing him every 15 minutes. He's an entertaining artist but I've had my fill. I did think his novel "Whatever Happened to Joe Merchant" was a good read and worth checking out.

Big fan here. I have his first 5 albums on vinyl. The Rancho Deluxe soundtrack as well. I chuckled when a couple of the tunes from the movie made it onto subsequent albums.

I play bars at marinas and around the Chesapeake Bay, so Jimmy's music forms a significant part of my repertoire.

He seems to have a good capacity for enjoying life. ;-) I like the parrot connection too...they're amusing and interesting birds. I've always wanted to walk around with one perched on my shoulder, delivering the occasional squawk or salty comment...

(Sits at workdesk in Crocs, ratty trousers, tank top, and Big Dog shirt covered with recipes for tropical drinks)

I certainly have the wardrobe and the taste in bar fare, but am not much acquainted with Jimmy Buffett's music. But if it's good enough for Olddude...

You should definitely check it out, especially his earlier songs. Great beach music. He has a 4-CD boxed set called, Boats, Beaches, Bars, and Ballads. Or something like that. Those words, some order. Very nice.

I liked early Jimmy Buffett before he turned into a brand. Highway A1A was a good album and so was Son of a Son of a Sailor, but he's been flogging the same worn out thongs-hulashirt-margarita schtick for thirty years and its gotten old. Just my opinion.

Never heard of him until I saw a picture recently in a Martin guitar magazine. Is it Buffet as in "Boofay",ie canapes, smoked salmon etc., or is it Buffet as in "Buffetted by the wind,Jim lad " ??
Anyway,he looks like an OK,laid-back sort of guy to me,and he likes Martins ( and probably Martinis too),so maybe I'll try and listen to him......You-Tube ,perhaps?? Is he on it ??

I live in the heart of Buffet country. He's from the Alabama Gulf Coast (aka "Redneck Riviera") town of Orange Beach, which is less than an hour's drive from Pensacola. Playing music in public around here, particularly at a beach community, is guaranteed to result in calls of "Do some Buffet, man!" Anyone who's seriously trying to make a living doing solo bar gigs around here had better know some Buffet songs, whether he likes 'em or not. It keeps the peace and increases the tips.

Personally, I think he's okay, but I'm not a big fan. His lyrics tend to glorify the drinkin' and dope smokin' beach bum lifestyle and I don't drink, don't smoke, and haven't been to the beach in years. The only one of his songs I do is "Pencil Thin Mustache".

How do the locals react to parodies of Jimmy Buffet songs?

not martinis, but margaritas...even has a brand of tequila named after him...and beer...and http://www.landsharklager.com/...and salsa...and blenders. In May 2009, Miami Dolphins majority owner Stephen Ross and Jimmy Buffett announced that the home stadium of the Miami Dolphins would be renamed LandShark Stadium for the 2009 season.

i used to have a parrothead version of mah johng game where the tiles were lost shakers of salt, cheeseburgers, hammocks, etc.

Jimmy has written a couple of books, and i, too have read
and enjoyed "Joe Merchant"

He is also a pilot (whose plane has been shot at by jamaican police)

i am not so enomored of his music, but he has an interesting and varied and successful life. Between his restaurants, album sales, and tours, he earns an estimated $100 million a year.

Oh his stuff is just fun, I like volcano and come monday, fins
just silly songs that make people smile. I like him a lot ... fun to play. The songs are all simple and the lyrics certainly are not deep in meaning ... just a guy who makes people happy I think with his sailing and beach songs

Bubblyrat: It's "Buffett" as in buffeted by the wind etc.

So, is it "Bubbly' as in champagne, or "boo-BLAY" as in Michael Bublé? :-)

Something most people don't know is that he is distantly related to Warren Buffett, the financial guy. Read it in the newspaper many years ago, so it must be true.
