BS: Quiz Time

12 Jul 09 - 08:40 PM (#2678692)
Subject: BS: Quiz Time
From: John on the Sunset Coast

I haven't seen one, here, for quite a while, but life can't be that easy.
The object of this quiz is to identify a person (real or fictional) or thing. The trick is that in the each word of an answer starts with the same letter: e.g. Hollywood blonde bombshell = Marilyn Monroe. I have, in some cases, introduced a punny clue to help (or perhaps hinder) you.

As per usual, please don't blurt out the answer on the thread. PM me with your answers. I'll post the answers anon...whenever that is.

1) Perhaps the most influential American gossip monger of his (or any?) day. He was untouchable.
2) Underneath all that dirt, she was the most beeyootiful Dogpatcher of them all. Eat your heart out Daisy Mae!
3) Life mate of the world's oldest comic strip detective.
4) This mobster's death wasn't a close shave.
5) This real-life cop became an actor who played mostly cops in movies, getting his start in a film which portrayed his real-life exploits.
6) Comic actress and radio personality; sort of a Gracie Allen type.
7) He was part of a long time vaudeville (music hall to you Brits) team. All heck broke loose when they performed their greatest show.
8) The greatest Amazon of them all…in four colors.
9) He sang with Redheads…and that's no lie.
10) She ain't no lady, but she sure is explosive.
11) Alter ego of this super arachnid.
12) The great escape-ist.
13) This mobster was fortunate to only be deported.
14) "America's Fightin' Cowboy"…not to be confused with "The King of the Cowboys".
15) Gossip biographer of the stars and famous…didn't like it when she was between the covers.
16) How are you doing…respond in a Runyonesque way.
17) Funny silent film star, but he wasn't a tramp.
18) "Yankee Doodle Boy" who went to London.
19) The prettiest wrestler in the 1950's…if he did say so himself,
20) Did this singer dent his car? Or his guitar?
21) The English answer to la Monroe.
22) He kept the kids out of the pool…hall that is.
23) A one hit wonder of the 1950s, he sang bloody well.
24) He was L'il Abner's ideel, a cop who looked like swiss cheese.
25) With his musical name, he was a natural for the stage.

PS: Not every letter is represented (obviously from the number of questions), and some are represented more than once. Good Luck.

Have had a few responses, but not a lot of correct answers. Some answers given could seem to be correct...except they don't take the clues into consideration; this is especially true for 14 & 17.
To clarify 15...this person was not a gossip columnist, but wrote several biographies which were mostly gossip.

Keep those answers coming.

Rapaire--where's your PM?

This seems to be a little harder than I anticipated, but that may be because most are quite old--as am I--and some out of main stream consciousness in this century.

Here are the double initials I had in mind, and which the clues point to:

1) Perhaps the most influential American gossip monger of his (or any?) day. He was untouchable. WW
2) Underneath all that dirt, she was the most beeyootiful Dogpatcher of them all. Eat your heart out Daisy Mae! MM
3) Life mate of the world's oldest comic strip detective. TT
4) This mobster's death wasn't a close shave. AA
5) This real-life cop became an actor who played mostly cops in movies, getting his start in a film which portrayed his real-life exploits. EE
6) Comic actress and radio personality; sort of a Gracie Allen type. VV
7) He was part of a long time vaudeville (music hall to you Brits) team. All heck broke loose when they performed their greatest show. OO
8) The greatest Amazon of them all…in four colors. WW
9) He sang with Redheads…and that's no lie.   SS
10) She ain't no lady, but she sure is explosive. BB
11) Alter ego of this super arachnid. PP
12) The great escape-ist. HH
13) This mobster was fortunate to only be deported. LL
14) "America's Fightin' Cowboy"…not to be confused with "The King of the Cowboys". RR
15) Gossip biographer of the stars and famous…didn't like it when she was between the covers. KK
16) How are you doing…respond in a Runyonesque way. NN
17) Funny silent film star, but he wasn't a tramp. CC
18) "Yankee Doodle Boy" who went to London. JJ
19) The prettiest wrestler in the 1950's…if he did say so himself. GG
20) Did this singer dent his car? Or his guitar? FF
21) The English answer to la Monroe. DD
22) He kept the kids out of the pool…hall that is. HH
23) A one hit wonder of the 1950s, he sang bloody well. NN
24) He was L'il Abner's ideel, a cop who looked like swiss cheese. FF
25) With his musical name, he was a natural for the stage. TT

Several wrong answers on #14 and #17. The clues should lead away from the popular answers of Roy Rogers and Charlie Chaplin.

BillD has six correct. Come on there must be old people or historians out there.BG    Good luck!

Answers tomorrow.

Seamus Kennedy has raised the bar to 19 correct. I erred in giving him credit for Vivian Vance as the VV...my bad. But a great job so far.

Only #s6,9,10,14,18 & 19 have no correct answers to date.

#10 is a thing, not a person.

Seamus Kennedy--
You demand a recount? DEMAND? Okay.

I stand by crediting you with 19 correct answers...still the leader, BTW, and a very fine total it is.

By my tally you omitted or were incorrect on #s 6,9,10,14,18,& 23. Have I erred?

Correct answers here about 4-5pm PDT, after I return from class. Contrary to many opinions, I do have class(es).

From: John on the Sunset Coast

This is the moment a few of you have been waiting for, but first some comments.

I was happy to see that there were so many questions answered correctly. Many of these folks or things were pretty esoteric, to say nothing of old. And they were very Amerocentric. The only question which nobody got was #6, so there must be some awesome trivia buffs out there.

Seamus Kennedy had an outstanding 19 answers correct, followed by SINSULL with, I think, 14.

So without further adieu [Drumroll], the answers:

1) Perhaps the most influential American gossip monger of his (or any?) day. He was untouchable. WALTER WINCHELL – he narrated The Untouchables TV show
2) Underneath all that dirt, she was the most beyootiful Dogpatcher of them all. Eat your heart out Daisy Mae!   MOONBEAM MCSWINE
3) Life mate of the world's oldest comic strip detective still detecting (I think).   TESS TRUEHART (or TRACY).
4) This mobster's death wasn't a close shave. ALBERT ANASTASIA He was killed in a barber's chair.
5) This real-life cop became an actor who played mostly cops in movies, getting his start in a film portraying his real-life exploits.   EDDIE EGAN   The 'real' Popeye Doyle of The French Connection
6) Comic actress and radio personality; sort of a Gracie Allen type.    VERA VAGUE   Never quite understood what was going on around her, hence the sobriquet Vague.
7) He was part of a long time vaudeville (music hall to you Brits) team. All heck broke loose when they performed their greatest show.   OLE OLSEN of Olsen and Johnson's, 'Hellz-a-Poppin'.
8) The greatest Amazon of them all…in four colors.   WONDER WOMAN four color = comic books
9) He sang with Redheads…and that's no lie.    SUMTHIN' SMITH (and the Redheads)   Hit in 1950s with "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie"

11) Alter ego of this super arachnid.   PETER PARKER
12) The great escape-ist.   HARRY HOUDINI
13) This mobster was fortunate to only be deported.    LUCKY LUCIANO   Fortunate = lucky. Wasn't gunned down like #4.
14) "America's Fightin' Cowboy"…not to be confused with "The King of the Cowboys". RED RYDER Comics, movie and radio…intro-ed as America's fighten' cowboy. Used to promote Daisy BB guns.
15) Gossip biographer of the stars and famous…didn't like it when she was between the covers.   KITTY KELLY bioed Frank and Jackie etc., cried foul when she was the subject.
16) How are you doing?…respond in a Runyonesque way.   NICELY NICELY   character in Guys and Dolls
17) Funny silent film star, but he wasn't a tramp.   CHARLIE CHASE The dapper Charlie of the silents.
18) Yankee Doodle who went to London.    JOHNNY JONES per G.M. Cohan standard
19) The prettiest wrestler in the 1950's…if he did say so himself.   GORGEOUS GEORGE

21) The English answer to la Monroe.   DIANA DORS
22) He kept the kids out of the pool…hall that is. HAROLD HILL   Trouble right here in River City.
23) A one hit wonder of the 1950s, he sang bloody well.    NERVOUS NORVUS hit song Transfusion; oft played by Dr. Demento
24) He was L'il Abner's ideel, a cop who looked like swiss cheese.    FEARLESS FOSDICK, Always shot full of holes

Sorry SINSULL, blonde bombshell is a discriptor not a name, see my original post wherein I use it as such. As umpire in chief, as well as quiz creator, I rule against your protest.

However, you are correct that you got 16 winning answers...I had forgotten the exact number, when I posted. Chalk it up to old age or that I was rigging the quiz against you, but I do humbly apologize. (Well not really humbly.)

#10 could also have been Bouncing Betty, a land mine used in VietNam. The first charge propelled the main charge up about waist-high, which then went off, disemboweling the victim.

So do I get to make a speech, all incoherent and thanking everybody from my Mum to the guy who trims the sound engineer's cat's whiskers? I think maybe I had better get a stunt-double, couldn't do it myself, I would just choke up.

Of course if I really knew stuff I could tell you why it means that. But I can't.
