If He is the Infinite wind of creation behind all apparent universes, surely his guitar would be as wide as a nebulous cluster, and strung with ethereal 13-dimensional strings, from which a burst of Intelligence would draw such a chord as to change the courses of the galaxies and swing the stars into rhythm. Such a guitar would span time and light years, and be of no substance, but would be entirely a thrum of coruscating, sweet harmony informing all the pores of existence itself. The scales of such a guitar would melt and reform the very hearts of life wherever found. Which is approximately what my 1969 D-35 does. A |

It seems to have a bit more clarity or "bite" or something like that. Mahogany sounds just a little too soft to me." For many years, I didn't even know that my D-18 was made with a different tonewood than the more expensive Martin dreadnaughts. I thought the price differential was due to the absense of ornamental trim. I only began to learn about the mahogany-vs-reosewood issue from a long series of Mudcat threads. The general consensus of opinions that I read seemed to point toward an idea that rosewood guitars emphasize the chordal sound of multiple strings played together, while mahogany highlights the separate notes of individual strings. I'm not sure if this is consistent with Little Hawks' characterization of rosewood "biting" clarity versus mahogany's "soft" quality, or if the two opinions are in direct opposition to each other ~ ??? Try as I might, I still haven't formed a sure opnion of my own on the subject. I do know know that I (as a fingerpicker) very much like the sound of my mahogany guitar, and am generally better able to get the sound I want out of my own D-18 than even the most elaborate and expensive borrowed -28 or -35. But that probably has as much to do with my familiarity with the quirks of my own instrument (versus my comparative cluelessness about how to play a strange guitar) than with the intrinsic qualities of the materials from which the instruments are constructed. |
14 Jul 09 - 03:30 PM (#2680213) Subject: RE: BS: If God made a guitar it would be From: Amos I have a similar partiality to my rosewood -35, POppa, but it may be for the same reasons. 14 Jul 09 - 03:44 PM (#2680225) Subject: RE: BS: If God made a guitar it would be From: Little Hawk Yes, I think mahogany back and sides sound very good for fingerpicking while rosewood sounds better for full chords. They're both quite good in any case. I've been looking at some large Talor guitars, "Grand Orchestra" body type, and they sound really good. The back and sides on those are "ovonghola" or something like that, can't quite remember the name of the wood. My favorite guitar that I've owned is a Martin D-28H with rosewood back and sides. |

14 Jul 09 - 04:07 PM (#2680247) Subject: RE: BS: If God made a guitar it would be From: Bee-dubya-ell If God were to make a guitar, it would first appear in the music store as a soprano ukulele. All the other guitars would rush to the music store and coo over it saying things like, "Aw! Look at the cute little purfling!" (Later, on the way home, they would say things like, "Did you get a look at the tuning machines on that poor little thing? Look like they belong on a Fender Precision bass!") If the little uke came with a an end-pin, the older guitars would argue about whether to leave it be, or whack a guarter-inch off of it. (Of course, if it was destined to play Klezmer music, there'd be no argument. Whack!) Then, after the little uke went to its new home, it would make God-awful noises at 2:00 AM and its owner would have to play lullabies on it for an hour, trying to get it to shut up. As the little uke matured, it would go through the various phases of ukehood, maturing into a tenor uke, and then a baritone uke, before finally becoming a 1963 00-18 Martin on its thirteenth birthday. Almost immediately thereafter, the surface of the little guitar would erupt into a mess of warty nodes which would persist for five or six years. Some guitars would make it through this stage with no lasting scars, while others would wind up looking like they'd been played by drunks using church keys for picks. At about the same time, the little 00 would announce that he wishes he'd been born a Fender Stratocaster. He will sulk and attempt to sound like he's being played by Pete Townshend any time you pick him up. Eventually, the guitar will mature into a fully fledged D-28 and settle into a life of predictable, steady playability. Then, one day, the braces closest to the sound-hole will begin to swell unaccountably, causing the sound-hole close up and take on the appearance of a raspberry. The tuning machines will develop stripped gears and have to be replaced with artificial ones. Worst of all, the end-pin will become limp and flaccid and no amount of coaxing will make it go through a strap-hole. |

Anyone know if that's so?" Well, the list prices are higher ~ just under $1200 for the all-acoustic models, more (of course) for those with onboard electronics. Depending upon how much a given dealer can take off the list price, perhaps one might be had for an even thousand or less... They call 'em "1 Series." There are four models: dreadnaught and orchestra-model bodies, each in an acoustic and an electro-acoustic (i.e., with built-in undersaddle pickup) version. The electric versions have single-cutraway bodies. The back and sides are real wood, not composite (plywood). The tonewood in question is neither rosewood not mahogany, but something called sapele (which some say is fairly similar to mahogany). There is absolutely no unnecessary trim or ornamentation, which keeps the cost down. |

Instead, I got this one: Taylor GS-6 It has Maple back and sides...an unusual choice for me to pick. I usually prefer Rosewood back and side. This guitar, however, has a wonderfully clear tone to it...quite different from the Rosewood guitars I normally go for, but good right across the whole range. It's also got a superb pickup pickup system in it and just "feels right". It also comes with a hardshell case that's built like a battleship, and a whole bunch of handy information sheets on taking care of your acoustic guitar. This is the first Taylor guitar I've ever owned, and I must say that I am very impressed by their high quality and their attention to all the little details. |
