Something wicked cool happened yesterday

So I go fetch my nephew, the boy who once arrived with a CD by some band named Limp Bizkit, and I tell him he's in charge of the CDs. I know I'm safe, because they're my CDs. Granted, some of them would drive Bill D and Kendall straight up a wall, but I digress. Anyway, he picks through them, making choices based on cover art. Some Altan, followed by The Clash, and then we hit pay dirt. He hauls out Johnny Cash and several tracks into the CD Ring of Fire comes on. Next thing I know, me, the boy and Johnny Cash are belting out Ring of Fire together.

Today, I took him to my favorite music store, where I bought him his own Johnny Cash CD. We also walked out with Singing Through the Hard Times, which I had to put on so he could hear Kendall sing Phoebe Snow and Jacqui sing Miner's Lullaby. We'll turn that boy into a folkie yet!

How come I missed the Johnny Cash? Seriously, way to go! I don't think you can get arrested for corrupting the kid (I'm assuming he's not 25 or so) yet.

Good job, Tami! Some of my fondest memories are sitting at my father's knee, singing along to Johnny Cash: "How high's the water, Mama? Four foot high and risin'." You can just imagine how long ago that was!

yes, i have seen johnny Cash bring the generations together on more than one occasion.

one was when i was a student in the audio and video production class and the local community college,,just a few years ago..the assignment was to create a movie trailer. the movie that both myself and a 20-
something year old student could agree on to use for our project was "Walk the Line" I happened to have a vinyl copy of a record which included a live version of folsom blues. we dusted off the turntable in the classroom...it had not been used for some time, and used that song for the soundtrack.
success@!

Good for Austin! If he listens to the rest of the Utah disc there's sure to be stuff there that he would enjoy.

'Wicked' has been used like that in Maine for a while.

You know the next step is guitar lessons? Or banjo, but he's probably no THAT 'groomed' yet.

Having dragged my kids around folk festivals for years and having let professor panic bring them up I was pretty sure that they would grow up hating anything traditional. A couple of weeks ago I was invited to see my lad play in the local battle of the bands and what did they lead of with ?? Lonesome Train Blues. Then a Muddley (as Sid Kipper would say) of Jigs and Reels. Sadly my kids don't live with me any more so I missed all their rehearsals. Whats more, the very young audience who had hitherto been exposed to three chord tricks played at amazing volume through distortion boxes, suddenly pricked up their ears and started dancing about.
So perhaps I WILL have someone to push my bath chair to the beer tent when I can't play cant more.

He's now expressing interest in Kendall's bluegrass CD, and we were listening to Kathy Mattea's CD "Coal" in the car last evening.

Claire, my dad and I used to just go out riding back roads in his pickup when I was little, with Johnny Cash in the 8 track. A couple of years before he died, my brother bought him a CD player. I went out and found the exact same album that we used to listen to and got it on CD for him for Christmas.

Johnny Cash actually offered to do a record of all Utah Phillips songs way back when, but Utah refused - he didn't want to be that commercial. So the Utah/ Johnny Cash connection is stronger than you might think.

Wicked cool indeed. (It's not mangled English; it's a folkloric expression with deep roots in Northern New England!)

Now not only does he want a copy of Kendall's CD, but he wants a signed copy!

A young cowboy named Billy Joe
Grew restless on the farm...

Austin is, of course, a wicked cool kid. So I am not surprised. When am i going to see him again, Tami?

Alas, probably not until next summer. He goes home to Kentucky in a couple of days.
