14 Jul 99 - 07:08 AM (#95028) Subject: RE: TUNE ADD: BALLYBAY From: alison Hi John, we are going to have to keep tabs on what each of us is doing otherwise we'll end up doing tunes we don't need to. I posted this one 3/2/99. If you keep a list of what you have done and I keep a list of what I have done... we could save time on doing the same tunes over again, and keep each other up to date...... I know it takes a long time for tunes to be put into the database... so it's easy to forget what we have and haven't sent in already. Slainte alison |

14 Jul 99 - 07:19 PM (#95227) Subject: RE: TUNE ADD: BALLYBAY From: John in Brisbane Thanks Alison, perhaps I might be better sitting on my hands for a while until the next version of the DT comes out. I get the impression that very few people ever extract the tunes direct from the threads anyway. In the meantime I'll see what sort of a list I can pull together. There have been a few threads on Christy Moore recently - perhaps I could tackle him as subject matter. Or we could split the DT into A-L, M-Z. Perhaps one of us Oz residents could tackle some of the more obscure Australian songs.
Regards
PS I expect my contributions of tunes will drop off after August. |

14 Jul 99 - 09:42 PM (#95259) Subject: RE: TUNE ADD: BALLYBAY From: alison Hahaha.... No problem John. and please don't stop you're doing a great job, but it can take ages for things to get into the database simply because ther is so much new stuff coming in all the time. I had actually started at A and was working through the ones I knew.. think I got as far as C before I got busy again. How are you doing the Christy Moore ones? by ear? I have the songbook, so if that makes it easier for me to do them than you doing it by ear let me know. slainte alison |

14 Jul 99 - 11:51 PM (#95311) Subject: RE: TUNE ADD: BALLYBAY From: Joe Offer I think there at least a few of us who harvest tunes that are posted. I admit I usually listen on ABCMUS, even though I've got my MIDI-harvesting pretty-much automated. I still think it's better not to start a new thread for adding a tune. If the lyrics have already been posted in the thread, I like to be able to look at them as I listen to the tune. If the lyrics are in the database, I think it's nice to include a link to the lyrics. the easier you make it, the more likely people are to make use of your work. Dick and Susan don't seem to have trouble finding the stuff we post. If there's any concern, I think we can just change the "subject" to TUNE ADD instead of starting a whole new threead, just for the tune. I suppose this is my pet peeve and I might be beating it to death, but I really do find it easier to learn about a song if all the information we have is together. -Joe Offer- |

15 Jul 99 - 04:43 AM (#95392) Subject: RE: TUNE ADD: BALLYBAY From: Wolfgang I see your point, Joe, but these two people (A-L and M-Z; why M-Z?) are doing such a marvellous job, I'd hate to see them detracted by urging them to additionally do the not so easy Forum Search. However, sometimes I long for a thread cleaning act like putting all threads to one song together and cleaning them from all posts like "Oops, I misprinted.." and "Do you never sleep, Joe?" that any newcomer wouldn't care to read. 15 Jul 99 - 10:15 AM (#95448) Subject: RE: TUNE ADD: BALLYBAY From: alison Thanks wolfgang, but speaking for myself anyway.. I'm difficult to put off. but you are right.. the forum search thing is a pain. certainly if there is an esaily accessible thread on the song in question I will put the tune there.. but I can't search back further than a year....... Is it easier Dick, when you do a run through, to find threads with titles like "Music add", or "tune add"? does that get you a big list of them to see what ones you need to put in rather than scouring through the bodies of other threads in the hope of finding tunes.? Or should we post the tunes in both places?.... Just a thought...... slainte alison |

15 Jul 99 - 01:18 PM (#95490) Subject: RE: TUNE ADD: BALLYBAY From: Joe Offer Hi, Alison - remember that you can put ADD and whatever you like in the subject without changing the thread title. the "subject" part of the Forum Search still works very well, so I've been changing subject titles of song lyric messages as I find them hidden in threads with titles that aren't obvious. I can't quarrel with people who people who post a tune in a new thread when one on the same song isn't currently active. Where I have a serious disagreement is with people that thing they need to start a new thread for the tune or lyrics just to get the ADD in the thread title, while there's already a discussion of the song going on. Let's let Dick tell us what he needs to find things because the database should have priority - but I do think that we get much better information of songs if we keep the entire discussion in one thread. -Joe Offer- So, Dick, can you give us an opinion on this? |
