From: Mr Happy We're all, I expect, used to hearing the loud bonging & sometimes distorted & raucous, chimes of the ice cream vans announcing their presence in the neighbourhood. I've heard 'em use a variety of themes, a recent one round here being 'Greensleeves' Other common tunes are 'Papa Piccolino', & the 'famous' 'O Solo Mio' [Just one Cornetto!] I was at Cleckheaton FF a few weeks back, & was heartened to hear 'The Trumpet Hornpipe' [Captain Pugwash] blaring out near the campsite, & wondered, is this a new way of introducing folk tunes to the masses? What think you? |

I have hilarious memories of one ice cream van (Eldorado, as I recall, in an old Ford Thames!), with a really weird sounding tune, totally unrecognisable. I asked the vendor about it at the time (I'd be around 14, now 61!), and he said it was supposed to be Greensleeves, but the pin barrel must have been in the wrong way! Nowadays they are mostly electronic, and come with a variety of tunes. I don't know how easy it is to change the selection, or if they are fixed in some way on installation... You can tell the electronic ones, because they always start at the beginning of the tune, whereas the mechanical ones would start where they left off! |

My wife knows them by some other name. |

The inference is that he might have written it but the evidence is not there. He was an accomplished musician. There is a record of a Morris tune called Greensleeves (from the time of his encumbancy) but I am not sure if we know how the tune went. From: Dave Roberts It is noticeable how the improvement in amplification equipment has made the ice cream chimes much clearer and less distorted. The same thing has happened with Santa Claus' annual trip around Middlewich just before Christmas, courtesy of the Middlewich Round Table. The over-amplified and raucous carols-on-cassette were a sure sign each year that Christmas was coming. In recent years, however, an i-pod connected to a small, powerful and crystal clear battery amp provides a sound which wouldn't disgrace a hi-fi system. Naturally, nostalgia being what it is, I find that I am now missing the old, screeching, blaring, Christmas carols. And the old screeching, blaring ice cream chimes too. It's still the 'Wheels' cha cha here, by the way - I think he's called Mr Whippy. Or am I thinking of a Tory MP? |

The notes in his memorial album on the song suggest that the song came to Dave via the 'New World Trio' and that the some may have been composed around 1962. The version Dave sang mention the conscription and the Vietnam War, which is proberly a re-write of the orginial version, as 1962 the Vietnam war was only just starting and Australia involvement was miminal. If you put "Creamsleeves" into the search box on this site, you will find a number of thread discussions of the song's provenance - and the lyrics! BTW, my Scouser partner sometimes comes out with an advertising jingle : "What could be nicer, than a Pendleton's twicer" - but maybe that was a radio ad, rather than from an IC van??? Cheers, R-J |

The inference is that he might have written it but the evidence is not there. He was an accomplished musician. There is a record of a Morris tune called Greensleeves (from the time of his encumbancy) but I am not sure if we know how the tune went. In Oz (and I'm sure we didn't originate it) there is a Morris tune that is known as "The bacca pipes jig" which is "Greensleeves" played in a sprightly 6/8. And, as Tangledwood and Rich-Joy have both mentioned, Greensleeves as the theme tune for Mr Whippy vans has been out here since the early 60s. In fact, a friend of mine from student folk scene days got his solicitor's practice ("attorney" for those from the US) up and running partly by pursuing icecream vendors who "infringed Mr Whippy's copyright on the use of Greensleeves as the tune for soliciting customers". Given its age (as presented by Mr Red, above) I suspect the only leg Mr Whippy had to stand on in such an assertion would be "ownership" of their "arrangement" (thus dignifying their contribution well beyond the bounds of taste, if not credibility) of the tune. That is to say, I actually looked at the ice-cream van today, rather than just listening to its beautiful distortion-free chimes. The ice-cream man is called 'Mr Softee', that most venerable of all British ice-cream purveyors' names (well, I imagine that the actual driver/seller himself is not called Mr Softee, but you know what I mean). On one side of the van is the information that the van is owned by the rather charmingly named 'Carousel Creameries'. As a diabetic I am forbidden from sampling the wares of this local institution, but I'm told that he does a wonderful '99'. |

What I never noticed on the original is the minor drop on the second runthrough. It is very noticeable on ice-cream chimes and sounds realy eerie! Reminds me of a spooky TV play some years ago where kids were singing 'Boys and Girls come out to play' (another popular van tune) and when you eventualy realised it was dead kids trying to lure people it became very disturbing! From: GUEST In 1986 when i lived in glasgow the kids where waiting for their van to get ice cream and the music was twinkle twinkle, and when they heard it the singing began and i remember the staff saying stay where you are you have got to get the wheelchairs out but they wouldn't wait... and out they went! In 1988 I was in Edinburgh with my mum and that van that got the ice cream just peeped a horn and my mum loved that. In 2007 I went to my own house and the tune I heard was yanky doodle, and that gets played all the time. It's hard to sing the words because the kids know many songs to that tune one of them is the song of Barny just written just 6 years ago for the show on telly. I think that the tune should be changed right away and it does not have to be a 185 to 1950s song it could be a song from the 1960s song by the Beatles like 'Yellow Submarine'. |
