Well, I want you to go there. Today. Get a coffee and a donut when you do. Consume them. Take careful note of the decor and all that sort of thing. Then return home, log into Mudcat, and give us all a full report on the experience. I want to know how the Dunkin' Donuts in your town measures up to international donut shop standards. I also want to get you out of the house. I'm worried about you. ;-D |

Say, I'm really impressed by one thing, though...the way the highway people in Maryland paint the little white street names and chevrons right there on the side of the road over the yellow line near the corner...and in that super-white high reflective paint that just stands out so clear! Wow. It's really an eye-catcher. They sort of do it at a neat angle too, so it's easier to read. Clever. |

From: Severn We used to, for years in the DC area, have a local outfit called Montgomery Doughnuts whose doughnuts put Dunkin's to shame, but alas, MoDo is no more (not even quasi). I believe their Rockville bakery where they were made had damage in a blizzard some years ago, and they never came back, but on the hole, their's was the better doughnut. I had some decent barley soup once in a Dunkin years ago. I also bought doughnuts all around for those at my workplace there at Dunkin in Rockville on my way to work when my girl was born. Even if it had been a boy, too many people, including myself didn't smoke cigars.... |

But the one at Georgia Ave. and Reedie Drive in downtown Wheaton, MD is still a pure Dunkin Donuts - I was there just this morning. Severn, I certainly remember Montgomery Doughnuts. My recollection is that they had excellent cake doughnuts. But for their chocolate frosted raised doughnuts, they committed the ultimate sin - before they put on the chocolate frosting, they glazed the doughnuts!! Oh, the humanity! The name first appeared in 1803, listed as 'American' in a British paper, but the mention by Washington Irving, 1809, is usually cited. A Dutch origin is possible (see online articles). There is a baked 'doughnut,' sometimes seen in supermarket bakeries, but it lacks flavor, character, presence, and doesn't deserve mention. Here is a beignet recipe, PoppaGator may have a better one: 1 1/2 cups warm water Dissolve 1 envelope active drt yeast in the water; let stand 5 minutes. -------- 1/2 cup sugar, fine granulated 1 teaspoon salt (or less) 2 eggs, beaten 1 cup evaporated milk 7 cups flour 1/4 cup shortening (softened) Oil (lard best)... for the deep frying Powdered sugar Touches of cinnamon, or... (optional) Add sugar, salt, beaten egg and evaporated milk to the water-yeast mixture and whisk or blend with mixer. Add 4 cups of the flour and beat till smooth. Add shortening and slowly mix in rest of flour. Cover and chill overnight. Roll out on floured board, 1/8 inch thick. Cut into 3-inch squares. Deep fry for 2-3 minutes at 360 F. (until lightly browned). Drain and sprinkle with powdered sugar. |

From: M.Ted Late to the party, as usual--my wife's non-profit was in the County office building across the street from this Dunkin' Donuts, and I've had coffee, donuts, and even sandwiches from there, many times. However, there is a good Italian bakery behind the shop and several doors down, as well as an Indonesian bakery across Georgia Avenue. There are many little ethnic restaurants within a stones through, and, of course, Chuck Levin's is right around the corner as well, and, as BillD knows full well, only a short walk from the Royal Mile Pub, which is frequented by Mudcatters and their fellow travellers, and where one can be served haggis. |

I used to go down there & hang over the counter, watching to be sure the guy did NOT put onions on my sub. Now one entire little strip-mall area is being razed....I have no idea what is going in there. |
