New York City's Bowery Poetry Club will play host to a two-and-a-half-hour songfest honoring the 98th birthday of American folk music legend Woody Guthrie. This Tenth Annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash will begin promptly at 7:00 PM, Saturday, July 17, 2010. The cover charge is only $8, with a minimum purchase of one drink requested. All net proceeds from the cover charge will be donated to Oxfam America for Haiti earthquake relief and reconstruction. The Bowery Poetry Club is located at 308 Bowery between Houston and Bleecker Streets in the East Village section of Lower Manhattan. Born in Okemah, Oklahoma, on July 14, 1912, Woody Guthrie lived in New York off and on from 1940 until his death from Huntington's disease in 1967. The Birthday Bash will feature the songs of Guthrie and others performed in round robin fashion by various folk artists. Among them will be Sharleen Leahey, who will appear in a Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash for the first time. Sharleen is a talented guitarist, songwriter, and singer of both traditional and contemporary folk songs. Returning artists will include Toby Fagenson, Jessica Feinbloom, Joel Landy, Anne Price, Steve Suffet, and Gina Tlamsa. Each is an established performer in his or her own right. As in the past, Carlos Vazquez will provide accompaniment on the bass. As an added bonus, the Tenth Annual Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash will celebrate the first anniversary of the release of Open Your Hearts to the Paradise / The Best of the Woody Guthrie Birthday Bash. This CD features carefully selected live performances by 13 artists from the first eight Woody Guthrie Birthday Bashes. Only 500 copies have been pressed, and once those are sold, the CD will not be reissued.
