Despite Govermnent assurances The Vestas factory on the Isle of Wight has been closed. At present there is a sit-in by some emloyees to try try and reverse the decision.
There will be a rally outside the Court in Quay Street, Newport tomorrow at 9:30am. (4th Aug)
The court will be deciding whether the workers inside Vestas have to leave or are allowed to remain inside, so it's an incredibly important meeting.

For the management's latest view see
Vestas Press Release
It cannot be right that this can be allowed to happen with the need for Wind power so urgent.

If they have no orders for turbine blades, they have no need to build them at the moment. Perhaps when the credit crunch eases and the economy picks up, more customers will be ordering blades. Until then I suppose there is no need to keep the plant open - and it really does not matter if the product is turbine blades, guitar strings, or buggywhips.

For the future wind power has great promise. Problem is, that does not give the workers anything to build next week.

What I head on BBC news was councils are changing their decisions to set permit wind farms because the residents are all screaming not in my bloody back yard.

Many people find them an eyesore.

I think they look quite elegant. Certainly better than nuclear and other power plants, transformer stations and endless vista of pylons.

Did I also hear that Isle of Wight rejected planning to put a wind farm off shore, stating it would affect the tourism income?

So what are ya gonna do?

This is still a young technology, despite its visibility. Most of the alt-energy businesses still require subsidies to stay in business. With any luck, this will change in the not too distant future.

People who live near wind farms seem to hate the noise they make, even if they don't mind the visual pollution. They must have a point. If you stand under a power pylon on a windy day, the noise gets old quickly.

The novelty has long wore off. Neither use nor ornament - hideous to behold & woefully inefficient; fun to lie under at night when you're pissed though. Personally I'd love to see the back of the ugly great things; a real blight on the landscape - not to mention the amount of concrete poured into the ground to get them to stand up. Blah blah.

Apparantly Vestas has a healthy order book ......... unfortunately all the orders are from the USA, making production in the IOW not ecconomically viable!
It is a crazy world out there!
