04 Aug 09 - 05:01 AM (#2693353) Subject: RE: christmas 1914 From: skarpi here is the lyric and the chords This is a request from thatcher1976 SAC Nigel Sampson 51 Sqn RAF Regiment Royal Air Force This song recounts the events that began on Christmas Eve 1914 around Ypres in Belgium when a spontaneous truce broke out instigated not by the governments or officers, but by the rank and file, fighting men. After placing candles on trees as improvised Christmas decorations, the troops on each side began by singing carols from trench to trench over no mans land and continued by shouting Christmas greetings to each other. This goodwill escalated into exchanging gifts by meeting in no mans land and attending joint burial ceremonies for fallen comrades The truce spread miles and miles down the line. A football match was played on Christmas day in the mud of no mans land which Germany won 3-2 The truce was condemned by the military hierarchy on all sides and the troops involved were replaced as it was felt that they could no longer be effective if they had befriended their enemy. Christmas 1914 (Mike Harding) D F#m G A D F#m A A7 Christmas Eve in 1914, stars were burning, burning bright D F#m G A D A A7 D And all along the Western front guns were lying still and quiet D F#m G A D F#m A A7 Men lay dozing in the trenches, in the cold and in the dark D F#m G A D A A7 D And far away behind the lines a village dog began to bark Some lay thinking of their families, some sang songs while others were quiet Rolling fags and playing brag to pass away the Christmas night As they watched the German trenches, something moved in no man's land Through the dark there came a soldier carrying a white flag in his hand Then from both sides men came running, crossing into no man's land Through the barbed wire, mud and shell-holes, shyly stood there shaking hands Fritz brought out cigars and brandy, Tommy brought corned beef and fags Stood there quietly talking, the moon shone down on no man's land Christmas Day they all played football in the mud of no man's land Tommy brought some Christmas pudding, Fritz brought out a German band When they beat us at the football we shared all our grub and drink And Fritz showed me a tattered photo - brown-haired girl back in Berlin For four days after no-one fired, not one shot disturbed the night For old Fritz and Tommy Atkins, they'd both lost their will to fight So they withdrew us from the trenches, sent us far behind the lines They sent fresh troops to take our places and told the guns, Prepare to fire And next day in 1914, flares was burning, burning bright The message came, Prepare offensive! Over the top were going tonight And men stood waiting in the trenches, looked out across our football park As all along the Western front the Christmas guns began to bark And men stood waiting in the trenches, looked out across our football park As all along the Western front the Christmas guns began to bark kv Skarpi |
