Lyr req/ADD: Songs by Donovan

Subject: Songs by Donovan
From: Angus McSweeney

OK, OK, He's probably not a true "folkie", but he did dedicate a song to Woody Guthrie and a lot of "folkie's" did sing his songs. I was surprised when I did a search that no Donovan songs appeared on the database. Anyone know a link with a good collection of Donovan Lyrics?

Ah, Angus, a man after my own heart! I will have to do some checking, because I think I may have found some for some of his older songs back early this Spring. I also went looking for the lyrics to his cd of last year, "Sutras" and as near as I can figure, based on what other postings I saw in fan sites, he keeps a very tight control on them and hasn't allowed anyone to make them available anywhere; they aren't even on the liner notes, so short of listening & trying to jot them all down, I'm sunk.

I will look back in my "history thing" on the 'pewter & see what I found. Hopefully someone else will come to our rescue.Oh, and who cares if he is considered strictly "phoak" or not. The man can write words and sings beautifully. Have you heard Sutras? There's not one song on there that doesn't sounds fabulous.

What! No yellow is the color of my true love's hairrr?? Actually, what I really want is the Intergalactic Laxative . A friend of mine had loaned me a Judy Collins, Tom Paxton tape when I was in Germany. I was listening to it while drifting off to sleep, and at the end he'd put this song. All I can remember is

If Shitting is your problem when you're out among the stars The intergalactic laxative will get you from here to Mars.

Any help with this one (Now DON'T suggest prune juice, please)

Susan, the high-minded Donnovan fan.

as in "You make my bowels loose?".........Susan my old Counc. of the Southern Mountains Buddy, would I say something like that?

Angus, you're right that Donovan doesn't get mentioned much around here........It all gets back to what's folk and we discuss that subject ad nauseum. However, you will find one post about Donovan from me on a favorite love songs thread. One of mine is "Catch the Wind"...if he never did anything else, that one is worth it!!!

Donovan probably did as much folk (maybe more) as any of the others from his early days, trad like Candy Man, Coulter's Candy, Henry Martin, Young But Growing, etc.) as well as Buffy S Marie's "Universal Soldier", Woody' "Car Song", Tom Paxton's "Rambling Boy" as well as many folk covering his material. I always loved his Where Your Love Like Heaven, From A Flower To A Child era, these are the songs I sang years later to my kids & we all loved them & still do. Barry

" twas then that the Hurdy Gurdy Man came singing songs of Lo-o-ove...Hurdy Gurdy Hurdy Gurdy Hurdy Gurdy Gurdy he sa-a-ang...." background music for a quaalude overdose.

I think the Intergalactic Laxative was from Cosmic Wheels , which was my favorite Donovan album, Susan.

Thank you one and all - I appreciate the input. I'd like to go back and comment on all your replys - but thanks for the links, thanks for the tips, I agree that Donovan's first two albums were full of traditional folk (and hearing Donovan sing "Remember the Alamo" is truly an intergallactic cross-cultural event if there ever was one). And John in Brisbane, I'm intrigued... I'll try to teach this 49 year old mind something new (and completely different) so that I can translate your contribution. Katlaughing, you have me out looking for "Sutras" today...Thank you one and all...anyone else care to share?_

I have quite a bit of Donovan tab. I didn't write it. I got it sent to me by a guy named Roger Mock, can't find his e-mail address now, but I can copy and pass it on if interested.e-mail me; eric@lackford20.freeserve.co.uk by the way there was always some Dylan Vs Donovan arguement going on in the mid 60's about who was better- I always figured the two were distincly different and love the work of both of them. I play both dylan and Donovan (earlier thread creep!!) I think they both have their place in folk music. I ahve seen both, and have almost everything on vinyl or CD by both of them. Sutras is brilliant, and the "marble arch" records now copied onto various CD's were also good. I wans't too sure about HMS Donovan, but Cosmic wheels!!!!! Yeah man!ride on, peace n love

Eric, maybe you can help me figure out which album i had and lost in the 60's to a rat who never returned it? The only think I can remember is it had, I think, a psychedelic cover and have the chaffinch song on it (sorry, it's very vague) as well as the widow on the shore one. Darn it, it would've been new in 1968 or '69, I think. Ring any bells?

Thanks,

kat

As regards the Alamo, there is a trad itional song called REMEMBER THE ALAMO here. The 1960's song by the same name, popularized by the Kingston Trio and Donovan, I do not find in the DT. It goes:

One hundred and eighty were challenged by Travis to die
By the line that he drew with his sword when the battle drew nigh
Let he who would fight to the death step over,
But he who would live better fly.
And over the line stepped a hundred and seventy-nine!

Cho.:Way up! Santy Anna we're killing your soldiers below,
So the rest of Texas will know,
And remember the Alamo.

'S all I remember...but there is at least one more verse.

Hey!.... this guy was one of my favorites! If Dylan can be considered a folky singing "Leopardskin Pillbox Hat" so can Donovan singing "How High the Gulls Fly Oer Islay". I considered it a time of "peace" and "love" and not just a time for acerbic "put down"

Dylan's animosity and rudeness towards Donovan, forever put me off Dylan. Some of Dylan's songs are pure genius but he still belongs on a previous thread linking creative genius to personality defects.

There is two more verses. Jim Bowie lay dying his blood and his powder were dry. But his knife at the ready to take a few more in reply. Young Davy Crocket lay laughing and dying the blood and the tear in his eye For Texas and freedom no man was more willing to die

Chrs

A messanger sent to the battle once bloody and loud. He found only skin and bones where he once left a crowd Fear not little darling of dying for we'll fight 'till the last of us be We'll fight for Texas and freedom and liberty chrs Remember the Alamo!

Amos, I saw a documentary awhile back and if I recall correctly, when Dylan was performing in England in the sixty's he made a remark on stage at the Palladium or someplace like that about Donovan's gender identity. There was also some footage of he and Dylan in a hotel room in England. Dylan was being particularly surly and rude to Donovan, who obiously idolized him.

There was also talk here years ago, in Canada at least, that Dylan wrote "Baby Blue", as a put down of Donovan. I think this was covered on other threads, by people more knowledgeable than I, and I haven't read any of the old threads regarding this issue, so this may be a matter of dispute. I'm also finding I really need to seriously consider a regimen of Ginkgo lately.

I saw him on TV a long time ago, when TV was bold enough to occasionally pander to the counterculture. It was on a venue such as "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," but it wasn't that show. He sat cross-legged in the middle of the stage and played (I think), Wear Your Love Like Heaven. When he was done, the audience threw flowers at him. The same show also aired Arlo Guthrie, who did (I think, again) The City of New Orleans. Arlo also discussed the problem of finding a word that rhymed with "orange." The only word he could think of was "door hinge."

Seeking a rhyme for "orange" is a waste of time
Easier to move the orange, to make the rhyme.
'Cuz unless you use sounds foreinge
There ain't no English word that rhymes with orange.
And certainly not dee-range or DOOR hinge!

Metchosin, yes that is the song, but there were two albums which included it. I went out years alter and found one which has it but it wasn't the same album as the first. The second one is light blue sky over a sandy coloured land, with a little bird flying across the sky and it is, I think, live.

Donovan is still very much the songwriter/singer. As mentioned before in this thread, his newest CD, "Sutras" is, IMO, superb, not one song on it that I don't love.

If anyone ever find the lyrics to any of the Sutras' songs, please let me know.

Thanks,

Amos, In answer to your question, Donovan is still performing and did a tour of Australia a couple of years ago.

Whilst he went on a bit about the old days, did a lot of name dropping and was (I think) a little partonising to the audience, his guitar work is still very solid and his voice is a good as ever.

All in all I enjoyed the show as did my 25year old son who had never seen him before, and knew very little about his music.

No net link at home at the mo, so I've come to this late.

I was only playing the Alamo last night a rousing chorus and great to sing.

I saw Donovan a year or so back, he had his daughter singing backup and it was a good evenings entertainment. Made me feel young again (and that's difficult to do).

Does anyone have the chords to Celia of the Seals ? I asked a little while back but no joy.

To follow the path of the gypsy-o.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE INTERGALACTIC LAXATIVE (Donovan)^^
From: Chris/Darwin

Eric, the last verse goes
"fear not little darlin' of dying, if the world be sovereign and free
For we'll fight to the last.."

The Intergalactic laxative was taught to me in the 70's by a mate, and I never knew it was a Donovan song. Here goes:

I was impressed like everyone, when man began to fly
Out of earthly regions to planets in the sky
With total media coverage, we saw the heroes land
As ceremoniously they disturbed the cosmic sand

In awe and admiration we listened to the talk
Such pride felt they, such joy, to be upon the moon to walk
My romantic visions shattered when it was explained to me
Spacemen all wear diapers in which they shit and pee

CH Oh the intergalactic laxative will get you from here to there
Relieve you and believe me without a worry or care
If pooping is your problem when you're out there in the stars
The intergalactic laxative will get you from here to Mars

They don't partake like you and I of beefy burger mush
Their food is specially prepared to dissolve into slush
Absorbed by multi-fibres in their super diaper suit
Otherwise their slush might trickle down inside their boots

You may well ask now what becomes of liquid they consume
A pipe is led from penis head to a unit in the room
The water is re-circulated, filtered for re-use
In case of anti-gravity, pee gets on the loose

Whenever man has conquered, in his quest for frontiers new
I'm glad he's always had to do, the number One and Two
It makes it all so ordinary, just like you and me
To know the greatest heroes, they had to poop and pee

The intergalactic laxative will get you from here to there
For cosmic constipation, there's none that can compare
If pooping is your problem when you're out there in the stars
The intergalactic laxative will get you from here to Mars

Regards
Chris

"For Little Ones" is the album that has "The Enchanted Gypsy" and "Song of the Naturalist's Wife" and "Epistle to Derroll" etc. -- it is also part one of a two-record set called "A Gift From a Flower to a Garden", and my ginkgo deficiency is preventing me from remembering the name of the second record in the set. The live album (was it called Donovan Live? I don't think so) is, I think, the one with the bird flying over the sand. I'll have to go back to my record collection and straighten it out.
I used to sing "To Try for the Sun" as I'd walk home from the bus stop on cold winter days in Philadelphia. "Our years put together counted thirty"...those were the days. "For Little Ones" started out with the sound of a baby crying. When I first put it on my stereo my mother ran into the room saying "Did I hear a baby?"
When I heard "Catch the Wind" I assumed that Donovan started out by trying to be another Dylan, and then moved on to his own stuff.
I just keep loving the Mudcat. Where else can you talk about this stuff to people who understand?

Aloha,
Mark

I remember hearing "Season of the Witch" done by, I believe, Vanilla Fudge, on the radio in 1969 or so. I think I remember, in the middle of the acidy part, an announcer-like voice saying, "President Johnson is taking this trip...to make some headlines." Was I dreaming, or did that really happen?

Aloha,
Mark

From: GUEST,ALICAT OF COALTOWN

Hi Gary

As I promised here's Celia of the Seals from Donovan's HMS Donovan Album. Sorry it took more than two days but teaching got in the way. Have asked a friend for the chords but this will take longer is great if you can work out an echo on the chorus of this

Should you wander this land to the north
As few seldom do
Should you follow the song of the gull to Enchanted Western Isle
Coax a fisherman take you out
Where the silky seals are seen
Hear the stories that they tell about
Celia of the seals
She knows just how they feel
Celia of the seals

Chorus
Noinia noinia noinia
noinia noinia nay
Celia of the seals

Seal hunters are not brave and bold
They murder her poor wee seals
And cut of the skins with their souls
Cursed are those who deal
There's no reason for this slaughtering
They are left on the rocks to bleed
It's not a man who does this thing
It's a cruel and heartless deed
Celia of the seals
Celia of the seals
Celia of the seals
Celia of the seals

Chorus

Noinia noinia noinia
noinia noinia nay
Noinia noinia noinia
noinia noinia nay Fade out from around here
Noinia noinia noinia
noinia noinia nay

Celia of the seals
Celia of the seals

Crowhugger can get the chords to Atlantis if you still haven't got them. They are used as a simple background top the poem and as Gary says the refrain is repeated ad inf.

If I remember the story correctly, the first time Donovan met Dylan, Donovan played him a new tune which turned out to be Mr Tambourine Man (probably Donovan had ingested it from some background radio or something). How's that for life's embarrassing moments!!! Dylan decided he was a phony from then on (and when Dylan decided something, that was it forever). (This could, of course, be a completely apocryphal story).
God, Season of the Witch, Guinevere. The hours I spent listening to those songs. When I think of the kinds of flower-power outfits I was wearing at the time -- or was it just the drugs???!!!!!!

I remember Donovan being on a British TV show, That was the week that was ( If I remember correctly) This show took a satirical look at Britain, and was as cruel as anything I have ever seen since. Donovan used to sing the weeks news. I would say that this is where he did his apprenticeship in sonwriting. He was really the highlight of the show.

Unless I'm much mistaken (which is entirely possible!), the singer on That Was The Week That Was was Lance Percival, not Donovan. There was also Millicent Martin...

Didn't Lance do a topical calipso each week ?

And how many comics can you name who first made their name on telly with that show ? (I know my place).

I was there but don't remember all of it.

From: Bernard

The Alamo - as I remember it from way back!
1. One hundred and eighty were challenged by Travers to die
By a line that he drew with his sword as the battle drew nigh
A man that crossed over the line was for glory,
And he that stayed, better hide.
And over the line crossed one hundred and seventy nine.

Chorus: Way-up, Santiana, they're killing your soldiers below,
So the rest of Texas will know
And remember the Alamo.

2. Jim Bowie lay dying, his blood and his powder were dry
With his knife at the ready to take him a few in reply.
Young Davey Crockett lay laughing and crying,
The blood and the sweat in his eyes.
For Texas and freedom no man was more willing to die.

3. A courier came to a battle once bloody and loud
And found only skin and bones where he once left a crowd.
Fear not, little darling, of dying
If the world is sovereign and free,
For we'll fight to the last for as long as liberty be.

At least, that's how we used to sing it in the early '70's

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the double album "HMS Donovan" which was a collection of childrens (of all ages) nursery rhymes. It was one of my favourites, till I loaned it to someone who lost it. I searched in vain for years for a replacement copy. I did eventually manage to get a taped copy but of course it does not have that magical cover painted by the Scottish artist "Patrick"

I saw that somebody asked here for the name of a second album in "A Gift From a Flower to a Garden." It's called "wear your love like heaven," and I bought it a few months ago from a used record store. I have to say that it was a disappointment. I like the title song, but not really anything else.

The other Donovan album which I have is called "Catch the Wind," which was released in Britain as "What's Bin Did and What's Bin Hid," I believe. I like it much better.

To the person who asked for chords to "Celia of the Seals," I found them online recently with lyrics.
http://www.fretplay.com/tabs/d/donovan/celia_of_the_seals-crd.shtml

I don't own many of Donovan's albums, but I sometimes listen to his songs on a free music listening website that a friend showed me. It's http://listen.grooveshark.com I am too young to have lived in his era, but I enjoy his songs all the same. A teacher in middle school sang "Colours" for us, and that's how I first learned about who he was. Some of my favorite songs are "Colours," "To Sing for You," "Guinevere," and "There is a Mountain." "Ballad of a Crystal Man" is my number one favorite. I learned it from a back issue of "Broadside Magazine" at http://broadsidemagazine.com/.

This is a continuation of my post above. I forgot to respond to the post about "Goldwatch Blues." This song may be un-PC, but it has a worthy message. Somebody told me that it is about employers who have total control over their employees' lives. During their retirement, they were given only a gold watch for their years of hard work. I don't know about what was PC or not in the sixties, but I would guess that it wasn't the same as what is PC today. So perhaps "queer" was not considered a bad word back then, although it certainly is today.

Sure :-)
I've had a check of both the Spring Equinox and Easter threads. I suppose I was hoping to head away from specifically Christian Easter themes in favour of more agricultural, seasonal and folkloric ones.

I did find this Donovan song recommended by ClairBear on another thread:

Lullaby of Spring
Donovan

Rain has showered far her drip
Splash and trickle running,
Plant has flowered in the sand
Shell and pebble sunning.

So begins another spring,
Green leaves and of berries,
Chiff-chaff eggs are painted by
Mother bird eating cherries.

In the misty tangled sky
Fast a wind is blowing,
In the new-born rabbit's heart
River life is flowing.

So begins another spring,
Green leaves and of berries,
Chiff-chaff eggs are painted by
Mother bird eating cherries.

>From the dark and wetted soil,
Petals are unfolding.
>From the stony village kirk,
Easter bells of old ring.

So begins another spring,
Green leaves and of berries,
Chiff-chaff eggs are painted by
Mother bird eating cherries.

Rain has showered far her drip
Splash and trickle running,
Plant has flowered in the sand
Shell and pebble sunning.

So begins another spring,
Green leaves and of berries,
Chiff-chaff eggs are painted by
Mother bird eating cherries.

Brother Sun, Sister Moon
(words & music by Donovan)

Brother Sun, and Sister Moon
I seldom see you,
Seldom hear your tune
Preoccupied with selfish misery

Brother Wind, and Sister Air
Open my eyes to visions pure and fair
So I may see the glory around me.

I am God's creature
Of him I am part
I feel his love
Awakening my heart.

Brother Sun, Sister Moon
I now do see you
I can hear your tune
So much in love with all that I survey.
