Hi all

Advance notice that the Raise Your Banners Festival of political song this year will take place in Bradford once again. The dates are 6 - 8 November and there will also be some activity in the week leading up the festival, including a political songwriting competition at the Topic Folk Club in the City.

Artists are yet to be announced but there will be a strong line up of performers, including many choirs, appearing at the main venues in the heart of the city centre which include Bradford Cathedral. There will also be a bookfair and workshops.

I'll post more info as it is available but be good to get it in your diary now! Check out the website for a preview of what will be happening.

Raise Your Banners 2009

Cheers

Interesting question and one that the previous organisers often discussed.

Depends on what you call left wing I suppose! But I am here to raise awareness of the festival not to get into a discussion about politics so you will have to await a response from others on that one. I will simply quote fron the RYB site

'The Raise Your Banners Festival celebrates the power of political music and the campaigning arts and gives voice to struggles for liberation, equality and justice, in defence of the environment, and for a better world.'

By the way 'Guest' it would be good if you add a name in the 'from' box or login so we know who you 'are' when you post otherwise you will understanably upset our mods.

"is it politically inclusive or left wing only?"

Errr.... is the BNP politically inclusive or ultra-right wing only?

Hi Joe, thanks for the friends invite, I will try and get along to this if I'm not working. Sounds really good and hopefully 'left wing only'

As a (debunked)native of the host city, I shall again be in attendance with NOTTINGHAM CLARION CHOIR, who (BTW) have a couple of clips on YouTube (if anyone fancies a taster).

Looking forward to hearing most of the 20-odd choirs who will be performing material often composed or arranged by their own creative talents giving social commentary on current affairs in song, and continuing a tradition of the clarion choirs of 100 years ago.

24 choirs each performed 2 or 3 songs in their 10 minute slot. The venue was Bradford Cathedral -- well done to the church elders for allowing it! The acoustics were fairly good - a bit muffled towards the back of the church. A very slick and efficient event organised by Keith and his colleagues so a big thank you and well done to him and his gang.
I enjoyed "The Laughing Policeman", but then I was in the choir! ;-))

Thanks Brad - glad you enjoyed it. It was a lot of hard work by everyone involved but it seemed to go really well. I only managed to get to see one of the Choirs (Corista?) but they sounded great and there was a really nice atmosphere in the cathedral

The finale on Sunday afternoon with the Hall Brothers was the only thing I managed to see in full and that was brilliant and really moving when they sang We Shall Overcome at the very end.

Hope to hold RYB in Bradford in 2 years time and maybe some othere events in Kala Sangham as it was a great venue
