euro speak

There was on here somewhere a thing about euro speak.

Of how the European union was to slowly re-arrange the way we English spell things I t would take five years or so
Firstly taking away the double letters we use etc. etc and changing s to z until it sounded like a German was speaking English.

Anyone ?

Chas

Hell's bells, Melvil Dewey (Dui) and Andrew Carnegie proposed this back around 1880.

Here's an example from Wikipedia:

His theories of spelling reform found some local success at Lake Placid: there is an "Adirondac Loj" in the area, and dinner menus of the club featured his spelling reform. A September 1927 menu is headed "Simpler spelin" and includes Hadok, Poted beef with noodls, Parsli or Masht potato, Butr, Steamd rys, Letis, and Ys cream. It also advises guests that "All shud see the butiful after-glo on mountains to the east just befor sunset. Fyn vu from Golfhous porch."

By the way, US librarians still spell it "catalog" in his memory (or maybe it's just laziness).

In the Oxford English Dictionary, apologize, recognize, etc. are spellings given. Hence recognizing, recognizance, etc.
Americans correctly and uniformly use -ize.
Many Britons, not properly instructed, incorrectly use -ise for many of these words.

American English is preferred by most countries that have English as one of their official languages.

Sorry, Fidjit.

I think Fidjit was speaking of an "official announcement" that the European Union had adopted a regulation which would bring about such a change, by yearly steps. I'm pretty sure it was posted to whatever joke thread was current on Mudcat at the time.
