I'm looking for the Samuel Small lyrics as sung by The Dubliners. I can't find them - I'd appreciate any help.

From: Barry Finn

In 1701 a chimney named Jack Hall was hung for burglary and the ballad is much the same as Sam Hall, written by C.W. Ross, a comic minstrel from England in the 1850's.

Now my name is Samuel Hall, Sam Hall
Oh my name is Samuel Hall
Oh my name is Samuel Hall, & I hate you one & all
You're a bunch of muckers all blast your eyes.

Now I killed a man they said, so they said
Oh I killed a man they said, yes they said
I killed a man they said & I left him layin' dead
Caused I bashed his bloody head, blast his eyes.

Now they put me in the quad, in the quad
Oh they put me in the quad
Oh they put me in the quad & they left me there by God
Fastened to a chain & rod, blast their eyes.

Now the preacher he did come, he did come
Oh the preacher he did come, he did come
Oh the preacher he did come & he looked so doggoned glum
As he talked of Kingdom Come, blast his eyes.

And the sheriff he come too, he come too
Oh the sheriff he come too, he come too
Oh the sheriff he come too with his yellow boys & blue
Sayin' Sam, I'll see you through, blast your eyes.

Oh it's up the rope I go, I go
It's up the rope I go, I go
Oh it's up the rope I go while you critters down below
Are sayin' Sam I told you so, blast your eyes.

Oh it's swingin' I must go, I must go
It's a swingin' I must go
It's a swingin' I must go, just because she loved him so
Just because she loved him so, blast her eyes.

I must hang until I'm dead, dead, dead
I must hang until I'm dead
I must hang until dead caused I killed a man, they said
And left him layin' dead, blast his eyes

Another goodnight song, mentioned above is Jack Hall, Captain (Robert) Kidd, another, who was also hung in 1701. Davy Louston a song of sealers & Ye Jacobites By Name also used the same air, (or close).

From: Bert Hansell

I remember a schoolboy version of that one....

His name was Nobby Hall, Nobby Hall, Nobby Hall
His name was Nobby Hall, Nobby Hall
His name was Nobby Hall and he only had one - arm
His name was Nobby Hall, Nobby Hall

They say he killed his wife, killed his wife, killed his wife
They say he killed his wife, killed his wife
They say he killed his wife, but it wasn't with a knife
They say he killed his wife, killed his wife

They sent him to the quad, to the quad, to the quad
They sent him to the quad, to the quad
They sent him to the quad 'cos he was a wicked - man
They sent him to the quad, to the quad

The judge's name was Hunt, name was Hunt, name was Hunt
The judge's name was Hunt, name was Hunt
The judge's name was Hunt and he was a silly - fool
The judge's name was Hunt, name was Hunt

The jailer's name was Jock, name was Jock, name was Jock
The jailer's name was Jock, name was Jock
The jailer's name was Jock and his keys hung from his - belt
The jailer's name was Jock, name was Jock

The parson came at last, came at last, came at last
The parson came at last, came at last
The parson came at last, with his prayer book up his - sleeve
The parson came at last, came at last,

So they hung poor Nobby Hall, Nobby Hall, Nobby Hall
they hung poor Nobby Hall, Nobby Hall
they hung poor Nobby Hall, by his one remaining - arm
they hung poor Nobby Hall, Nobby Hall

This is the version I know:

Oh, me name it is Sam Hall, chimney sweep, chimney sweep
Oh, me name it is Sam Hall, chimney sweep
Oh, me name it is Sam Hall and I've robbed both great and small
And me neck will pay for all, when I die, when I die
And me neck will pay for all, when I die

I've got 20 pounds in store, that's not all, that's not all
I've got 20 pounds in store, that's not all
I've got 20 pounds in store and I'll rob for 20 more
For the rich must help the poor, so must I, so must I
For the rich must help the poor, so must I

Oh, they took me to Coot Hill in a cart, in a cart
Oh, they took me to Coot Hill in a cart
Oh, they took me to Coot Hill and 'twas there I made my will
For the best of friends must part, so must I, so must I
For the best of friends must part, so must I

Up the ladder I did grope, that's no joke, that's no joke
Up the ladder I did grope, that's no joke
Up the ladder I did grope and the hangman pulled the rope
And ne'er a word I spoke, tumblin' down, tumblin' down
And ne'er a word I spoke, tumblin' down

Oh, me name it is Sam Hall, chimney sweep, chimney sweep
Oh, me name it is Sam Hall, chimney sweep
Oh, me name it is Sam Hall and I hate ya's one and all
You're a bunch of muggers all, damn your eyes, damn your eyes
You're a bunch of muggers all, damn your eyes

I had never heard of the other versions. I'm glad to get them. Thanks....John

There's one version in the database under SAM SMALL - enter it in the box in the upper right hand corner. It's a variant of Jack Hall. (In 1701 a chimney named Jack Hall was hanged for burglary.) These are a set of lyrics that were written by an English comic minstrel, C.W. Ross, in the 1850's. It's sung to the tune Ye Jacobites by Name (though I believe someone wrote me and said that's not always the case).

Now my name is Samuel Hall,
Samuel Hall, Samuel Hall
Oh my name is Samuel Hall, Samuel Hall
Oh my name is Samuel Hall,
and I hate you one and all
You're a bunch of mucker's all
Blast your eyes.
You're a bunch of mucker's all
Blast your eyes.

Now I killed a man they said
So they said, so they said
Oh I killed a man they said
Yes they said
I killed a man they said
And I left him layin dead
Cause I bashed his bloody head
Blast his eyes.
Caused I bashed his bloody head
Blast his eyes.

Now they put me in the quad
In the quad, In the quad
Oh they put me in the quad, in the quad
Oh they put me in the quad
and they left me there by God
Fastened to a bloody chain rod
Blast there eyes.
Fastened to a bloody chain rod
Blast there eyes.

Now the preacher he did come
He did come, he did come
Oh the preacher he did come he did come
Oh the preacher he did come
And he looked so doggone glum
As he talked of Kingdom Come
Blast his eyes.
As he talked of Kingdom Come
Blast his eyes.

And the sheriff he come too
He come too, he come too
Oh the sheriff he come too he come too
Oh the sheriff he come too
With his yellow boys and blue
Sayin Sam I'll see you through
Blast your eyes.
Sayin Sam I'll see you through
Blast your eyes.

Oh it's up the rope I go I go I go
It's up the rope I go I go
Oh it's up the rope I go
While you critters down below
Are sayin Sam I told you so
Blast your eyes.
Are sayin Sam I told you so
Blast your eyes.

Oh it's swingin I must go

It's a swingin I must go, I must go
It's a swingin I must go
Just because she loved him so
Just because she loved him so
Blast her eyes.
Just because she loved him so
Blast her eyes.

I must hang until I'm dead
Til I'm dead, Til I'm dead
I must hang until I'm dead
I must hang until dead
Caused I killed a man they said
And left him layin dead
Blast his eyes.
And left him layin dead
Blast his eyes.

Leslie N., Thanks for your helpful and historical response. Is there a popular Pub version done by Paddy Reilly? Some words may be "up the ladder I did go..." and "my neck will pay for all..." Thanks Boston Bill

The title in the database is Samuel Small. Sam Small features in a couple of recitations. See also: Tallow Candles, which is related and has the two lines you mentioned in the second posting.

That last posting is very close to the one sung here in Kent by, amongst others Paul Carr who I think learned it as a music hall song. The verse I almost remember went "Oh my name it is Sam Hall , it is Sam Hall/ Oh my name it is Sam Hall it is Sam Hall/ Oh my name it is Sam Hall/ And I hate you one and all/(forgotten this line)/ God damn your eyes."

Is the tune of this different from the tune of the song about Captain Kidd, the one that starts unaccountably

Oh, my name was Robert Kidd, when I sailed, when I sailed

Kidd's real name was William, but they (somebody) sang it Robert.

Seems there are at least two tunes to this series of songs, Dick -
Ye Jacobites by Name
and Aikendrum (you and I know that tune as "Captain Kidd.")

A couple of observations on Lesley's C H Ross version ...
Ross's version was acclaimed as being pretty dreadful (and thus very popular). "Muckers" is not the orignal word! "Quod" (with an "o") is slang for prison.

The tune is one of those that won't lie down. It appears in slightly different forms all over the place: Captain Kidd, Admiral Benbow, a number of scurrilous songs I don't remember from my schooldays; and there was a song called "In Mobile", which I could never tell if it was rude or not: Joe?!

Congratulations Ted, and welcome to the Mudcat Forum with sound!

Did you use Allan's program to convert the Mudcat text into a MIDI file, and then play the file using Media Player (or similar)?

Mudcatters would certainly appreciate you feedback as to how easy (or otherwise) you found it. Maybe a response to Joe's new thread would help others.
