04 Apr 97 - 02:49 AM (#3806) Subject: Sam Hall lyrics requested From: hakan.petersson@imt.liu.se I'm looking for the Samuel Small lyrics as sung by The Dubliners. I can't find them - I'd appreciate any help. |
04 Apr 97 - 03:21 PM (#3819) Subject: Lyr Add: SAMUEL HALL From: Barry Finn In 1701 a chimney named Jack Hall was hung for burglary and the ballad is much the same as Sam Hall, written by C.W. Ross, a comic minstrel from England in the 1850's.
Now my name is Samuel Hall, Sam Hall Another goodnight song, mentioned above is Jack Hall, Captain (Robert) Kidd, another, who was also hung in 1701. Davy Louston a song of sealers & Ye Jacobites By Name also used the same air, (or close). HTML line breaks added. -JoeClone 09-Jan-2001 |
04 Apr 97 - 04:38 PM (#3826) Subject: Lyr Add: NOBBY HALL From: Bert Hansell I remember a schoolboy version of that one....
His name was Nobby Hall, Nobby Hall, Nobby Hall
They say he killed his wife, killed his wife, killed his wife
They sent him to the quad, to the quad, to the quad
The judge's name was Hunt, name was Hunt, name was Hunt
The jailer's name was Jock, name was Jock, name was Jock
The parson came at last, came at last, came at last
So they hung poor Nobby Hall, Nobby Hall, Nobby Hall

11 Jul 99 - 06:21 AM (#94089) Subject: Lyr Add: SAM HALL From: Lesley N. There's one version in the database under SAM SMALL - enter it in the box in the upper right hand corner. It's a variant of Jack Hall. (In 1701 a chimney named Jack Hall was hanged for burglary.) These are a set of lyrics that were written by an English comic minstrel, C.W. Ross, in the 1850's. It's sung to the tune Ye Jacobites by Name (though I believe someone wrote me and said that's not always the case).
Now my name is Samuel Hall, |
11 Jul 99 - 01:17 PM (#94129) Subject: RE: need LRYICS: SAM HALL From: Boston Bill Leslie N., Thanks for your helpful and historical response. Is there a popular Pub version done by Paddy Reilly? Some words may be "up the ladder I did go..." and "my neck will pay for all..." Thanks Boston Bill |
11 Jul 99 - 01:36 PM (#94133) Subject: RE: need LRYICS: SAM HALL From: Susan of DT The title in the database is Samuel Small. Sam Small features in a couple of recitations. See also: Tallow Candles, which is related and has the two lines you mentioned in the second posting. |
11 Jul 99 - 05:45 PM (#94176) Subject: RE: need LRYICS: SAM HALL From: Boston Bill Susan- Thanks, Tallow Candles is a clone or vice versa. But I'm still hoping for SAM HALL(the not so famous chimney sweep). Boston Bill

11 Jul 99 - 06:14 PM (#94181) Subject: RE: need LRYICS: SAM HALL From: Legal Eagle That last posting is very close to the one sung here in Kent by, amongst others Paul Carr who I think learned it as a music hall song. The verse I almost remember went "Oh my name it is Sam Hall , it is Sam Hall/ Oh my name it is Sam Hall it is Sam Hall/ Oh my name it is Sam Hall/ And I hate you one and all/(forgotten this line)/ God damn your eyes." |

11 Jul 99 - 08:03 PM (#94227) Subject: RE: Add Lyrics SAM HALL From: Susan of DT Interesting, Ted. It's a mix of Sam Hall and Tallow Candles (which are related anyway). |
11 Jul 99 - 11:45 PM (#94262) Subject: RE: need LRYICS: SAM HALL From: Dick Wisan Is the tune of this different from the tune of the song about Captain Kidd, the one that starts unaccountably Oh, my name was Robert Kidd, when I sailed, when I sailed Kidd's real name was William, but they (somebody) sang it Robert. |
12 Jul 99 - 03:29 AM (#94302) Subject: RE: need LRYICS: SAM HALL From: Joe Offer Seems there are at least two tunes to this series of songs, Dick - Ye Jacobites by Name and Aikendrum (you and I know that tune as "Captain Kidd.") -Joe Offer- |
12 Jul 99 - 03:38 AM (#94305) Subject: RE: need LRYICS: SAM HALL From: Steve Parkes A couple of observations on Lesley's C H Ross version ... Ross's version was acclaimed as being pretty dreadful (and thus very popular). "Muckers" is not the orignal word! "Quod" (with an "o") is slang for prison. The tune is one of those that won't lie down. It appears in slightly different forms all over the place: Captain Kidd, Admiral Benbow, a number of scurrilous songs I don't remember from my schooldays; and there was a song called "In Mobile", which I could never tell if it was rude or not: Joe?! 13 Jul 99 - 07:57 PM (#94898) Subject: RE: Add Lyrics SAM HALL From: John in Brisbane Congratulations Ted, and welcome to the Mudcat Forum with sound!
Did you use Allan's program to convert the Mudcat text into a MIDI file, and then play the file using Media Player (or similar)?
Mudcatters would certainly appreciate you feedback as to how easy (or otherwise) you found it. Maybe a response to Joe's new thread would help others.
