23 Aug 09 - 08:06 PM (#2706964) Subject: John Ross music FREE- today only From: Genie John Ross Estate Sale I didn't know how else to draw people's attention to this quickly, but it seems now that the estate sale is over, there are still a lot of records and other music items left over from John's estate sale and they are being given away free. What is not taken today will probably end up in a landfill. Too bad they couldn't have arranged for a used music store or book store or thrift store to pick up the left over items. Genie |

24 Aug 09 - 05:07 PM (#2707591) Subject: RE: John Ross music FREE- today only From: Genie I was in Seattle till last Friday night but needed to get back to Portland so I came back that night. If I had realized there were so many items left over I probably would have stayed till Sunday to help redirect the "leftovers" to thrift stores, used music stores, bookstores, etc. I just didn't realize there was so much left and that it was destined for the dump if not taken by Sunday afternoon. Such a shame. |

24 Aug 09 - 05:39 PM (#2707632) Subject: RE: John Ross music FREE- today only From: Deckman Genie ... I appreciate your feeling that it's "such a shame," but let me gently put another persepctive on this. John was a HUGE collector of stuff: folk stuff, RR stuff, general music stuff, books and books and books, things apple, things electronic, things electric, anything relating to radio, on and on and on. I thought it was quite remarkable that so much of the top quality "folk stuff (tapes, records and books) was saved. Beyond that, my energies, and others, were simply expended. When all the was accomplished, all that was left was stuff, more stuff, and even more stuff! At some point, someone has to say, enough is enough. Bob(deckman)Nelson |

24 Aug 09 - 11:33 PM (#2707825) Subject: RE: John Ross music FREE- August 23 2009 only From: Genie Bob. please don't think that the tremendus efforts you folks made to sort through and salvage John's collections and work is unappreciated or undervalued. I'm so grateful that you folks from SFS and Mudcat were there do take on this monumental project. I also realize that if lots of good stuff of Johns ends up in a landfill, unfortunately, that's probably a drop in the bucket of usable stuff that goes there. We as a society have "too much stuff" and one result is that too often a lot of 'wheat' gets thrown out with the 'chaff'. (When I mentioned thrift stores, I should add that I know that a lot of good, usable stuff that they get as donations also ends up in landfills, because they just don't have the space and personnel to handle it all.) Still, I'd love to have done some scavenging/salvaging myself. But I can't be sure I'd have accomplished much by that. (Somebody's gonna have a helluva job sorting through or disposing of my own packrat collection when I kick the bucket -- unless I can get a lot of this done before I get to that bucket.) Genie |

It is tremendous what you all were able to save. I've made my son promise to burn any my old stuff, rather than dump it unceremoniously in the landfill; it won't amount to much anyway. |

25 Aug 09 - 01:26 AM (#2707858) Subject: RE: John Ross music FREE- today only From: Genie I mean it's a shame for good records, books, etc., that a lot of people would probably like to have should end up in the landfill. That's all. Of course it's also a shame that John's gone so soon. But that's the subject of another thread. Genie |
