Mudcat Locator - Where are you?

25 Aug 09 - 05:53 AM (#2707926)
Subject: Mudcat Locator - Where are you?
From: Allan C.

One of the great features of the Mudcat is
the wonderful Mudcat Locator which would be even more wonderful if it were better attended. I can tell you from experience that it can be a very useful tool when touring a country and hoping to encounter Mudcats along the way. And more recently I have used the Locator to contact a 'Catter who has supplied me with extremely valuable information about an area I plan to visit soon.

Please visit the link above or access the Locator by way of the Quick Links box on the Forum page and add your location to the lists. Or if you have posted to it before, check to see if your information is still correct. Have you moved?

The Mudcat Locator (and many other things here) used to be in the care of Jeff a.k.a. Pene Azul, who isn't round here much any more.

Maybe Max could drop by and let us know how / whether the locator is to be updated? Just looking at it now, there are many changes to be made, there are several names who are no longer with us, for example.

Whoever volunteers could well be inundated!

There was a Google (?) map set up once, too, that you could tag your location on. Can't find that thread/link, though.

Well it was a Frappr map, and this was the link: http://www.frappr.com/mudcatcafe, but there's no data there any more. :-(

This was the thread: Do we need a Mudcat Frappr?

The advantage was that it didn't require anyone to take care of it, but people had trouble logging into it, so it never went very far.

There isn't any "locator" on the quick links. Has something changed since the original post? And the link in that post is to a static list, with no way to add yourself.

On quick links go to "Members photos & Info" where there is a link to the 'Locator'

Poor Joe. He gets all the fun jobs don't he? If I was retired, I would volunteer to do it. I have a flair for the tedious tasks.

What is really weird to me is that this thread was stated by Allan C. We both worked in same Virginia community college back in the days of inception of the interwub and creation of Mudcat. It was Allan, pointed me to Mudcat Radio to see a performance of his in 1998 or 1999.

I had only been back to Mudcat a time or two prior to joining, to find song lyrics.

Small world innit?

Allan! Nice to *see* you!!

Folks, I wouldn't hold my breath about this, for the moment. If you want to post an update in this thread, as a matter of record, that would be good, imo. That way when and if Max or Joe or someone has the time, etc. to update the official list, they could refer to this.

I see a lot of changes, too, just in glancing at the old one. For instance, neither WyoWoman nor I live in Wyoming any more. And, my sister, "bet" is no longer in Colorado. All three moves were publicly documented in the BS section, I think before it actually was a separate space.:-)

So, to start the ball rolling:

For some Catters, paticularly in the UK, it would be unwise to give too precise a location (except by PM, to those you trust).

BNP thugs do NOT need to know where to find opponents, and said opponents do NOT need to have seven barrels of s**t kicked out of them.

Take care who you confide in.

No offence, but that is a narrow view. Mudcat has other things it does: amongst them is music discussion, and MySpace doesn't do it nearly so well at all. Facebook is a joke (imo), and while I do think MySpace has stuff the 'cat doesn't, if I had to give up one of the sites, MySpace would be gone in a second.

We live in Bremen, Ohio, a small village of a dozen streets, most still brick, and no traffic lights. We're just at the rising of the foothills of the Appalachians to the south and east, and the flat plains and farmlands to the west and north. We're about an hour southeast of Columbus and in many ways, 50 years back in time. We get 400-500 polite kids each Halloween the majority accompanied by a parent and most folks still don't lock their doors. The future will descend upon us all too soon I fear, but damn........it's pretty nice right now.

User open mike and I had a PM chat this afternoon about how folkjam's musician map www.folkjam.org/local/users) works and where we got it from.

It's based on google maps, obviously. Above that, we use Drupal - same as frappr. And on top of that I wrote custom code to blend the user details, the user list and the map together.

Max - if you want to explore any of this further with me, drop me a note through http://www.folkjam.org/feedback or if you have an account on folkjam.org via a PM to me - http://www.folkjam.org/privatemsg/new/2

Having said that and being mindful of the many privacy issues around putting your info "out there" on the Internet regardless of the forum, I must say I'm not yet convinced about putting actual contact details on a website of any kind even one as hallowed and august as Mudcat!

That said, any overseas travelling "catters coming through are welcome to PM me and we can take it from there.

Bill, Google earth is in error with the name of the road. I live on Bog Road which runs into Rush City Road. The name Rush City is part of the colourful history of the area. It was a small road with a few prosperous farms, the owners of which were said to always be in a rush to do everything. I have 75 acres of land, about half hay fields and half woods and bog, we are on the edge of a large bog called the Newington Bog. The cluster of buildings you see, with orange roofs are our house, barn and sheds.

The northeast Piedmont of North Carolina, in a small (formerly) mill town - furniture and textiles 'back in the day'- about 20 miles northwest of downtown Chapel Hill.

Warning-Major Thread-drift.

SG, that song pretty well sums up what happened in mill towns throughout the south between the very late 1980's and the early to mid 1990's. I moved to North Carolina from West Virginia in 1986, just in time to bear witness.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.

Nashua, NH, USA. Mat Damon thought he might move here to raise sheep (in "Good Will Hunting"), but there's nothing of that here, just shopping malls (no sales tax!) since we're on the border with Taxachusetts.
