Banjo Teacher Required Wigan UK

I have been asked by two members of Wigan Folk Club to find a banjo teacher, and so far I've been made aware of a guitar teacher in Bolton who also teaches banjo, but no one actually in Wigan. Does anyone know of a teacher in Wigan please? Or better still, can anyone make a recommendation?

What style of banjo playing are you talking about?

Neither potential student has expressed a preference for style - I think both of them would be happy to find someone to teach any sort of basics.

I'll pass on your details, Guest Banjo, thank you.

Its not so much style of play , but style of BANJO ! Tenor (Four String) is a totally different instrument to Five String !
Tenor (In Folk) tends to be Single string Melody , especially for Irish (As Barney McKenna of the Dubliners , whereas Five string is more picking , either Old Timey or Bluegrass !
I have had guys sent to me from a local shop for Banjo Basics who had bought a Five String and wanted to play Irish !

Terry - there's an American book by Tom Hanway that teaches Irish music on a five string using three finger picking. I've seen him play, and he sounds like Barney McKenna only better!

Thread creep.

Ken Perlman's melodic frailing style sometimes makes it sound like he's playing Irish tunes on a 4 string.

Good points from both Ray and Russ , but a beginner player with the 'wrong' banjo for the style he wants to play will have to work Damn hard and still never reach Hanway or Perlman standard !b
