"Song of the Islands"
(literal)
1
Beautiful Hawai'i, island of Keawe
Proud of its garland of lehua
And the mantle of Pana'ewa.
2
Grand is Maui with Haleakalâ
The sacred rose
Is for you alone.
3
Oah'u wears the 'ilima lei with pride
As beautiful as the manu ô'ô
The yellow bird of the mountains.
4
'Kaua'i's garland is the mokihana
Laua'e of Makana
The admiration of my heart.
5
Famous is Moloka'i preserved by the kuku'i
Of Lanikaula
And the waterfall of Moa'ula
6
Ni'ihau, Kaho'olawe and Lâna'i
Cherish their garlands of pû'û shells
The hina and kauna'oa
7
Tell the refrain of
Leis of Hawai'i
Leis of Hawai'i, respond.

Na Lei O Hawaii

Corrections-
Verse 2 Haleakalâ
Verse 6-
pûpû also hinahina (not hina)

Kauna'oa- orange flower of Lâna'i

Lehua- Assumes small tree proportions in some forests.
Kuku'i- a tree, the nuts often made into necklaces ('leis'). The oil in these nuts is very inflammable; in the old days the nuts could be used for light. If not properly cured for 'leis', the contents develop a horrible stink. The tree is common on a short trail to a waterfall above Honolulu.

mele- music or song.
