The words are in the DT click here.
You can hear the tune there too.
It's also known as The False Bride and there are several threads here as well.
I haven't heard Emmylou's version but usually there are only 3 chords in very obvious places.

So its not 'lambs in greenfields'?

You wanted 'The lambs on the green hills'

I found a video of Emmylou singing that on YouTube and verified that the tune in the DT is the same tune. (With a few variations, but that's only natural.)

I've been sitting here saying to myself, "I've played that! What IS it?"

It is the first part of a tune in O'Neill's Music of Ireland called 'Caitilin Tirriall' or 'Catherine Tyrrell'. In my edition it is #337. Number 336 is another setting of it, which seems to be similar, higher, and fancier.

I investigated the version in the DT, and words are nice but the MIDI has its quirks. I suggest finding MIDI's of 'Catherine Tyrrell' and seeing if they aren't more singable. Also, CT offers a little more variation.

Dilydaly, I might find time to post chords. Are you still with us? What key do you like? Are you a soprano, alto, tenor or bass?

The song moves stepwise a lot. Playing chords to it will require subtlety.

Emmy Lou Harris - Lambs on the Greenhills

I found a couple other C&W style versions of this on U-Tube but none in the traditional ornamental unaccompanied sean nos singing style that I had learned & prefere it sung in. None the less they were done nicely. It is a beatiful sung no matter how it's sung as long as it's sung well

Guest Leeneia, thanks for the info. As to what key i like or whether i'm a soprano etc i don't realy know.I try to sing the songs the way i hear them and most of the time that works. So if i had the chords to Emmy Lou Harris version i could always use the capo if needed.I just love folk music.

It is proving harder than I thought to nail the chords on this. When I try to establish what the notes are, the three different versions of the tune that I have heard all fight to be heard at once. However, I'm still working on it.

The song moves stepwise quite a bit, which is not good for guitar chords. Also, it's got quite a range. So be warned.

Keep checking back, 'cause I haven't given up yet.

Meanwhile, if anybody's worked out the chords yet, please post. If the chords are too high or too low for you, Dilly, find the thread on the 'chord-circle thing' and transpose.

MIDI and chord symbols sent to Joe for posting.

Please note: Emmylou Harris sings this baby LOW.

From Leeneia:

       A       D   A           E      A                          D
The lambs on the green hills, they sport and they play
       E               A    E   A    D       A         D
And many strawberries grow round the salt sea
          A D               E      A             D
How sad is my heart when my love is away
         A             E                   D A
How many's the ship sails the o-cean

Gee, the Emmylou Harris recording is good.

I love this song, though it is rendered slightly different by me. I learned it from Graham and Eileen Pratt LP. The best version I have ever heard.

Very plaintive.

Thanks for those chords though, Joe. May give this a try this evening or tomorrow.

We learnt it from the Johnstons record about 40 years ago.

Okay. I'll try again. On the version below, there should be a D over 'play.' If there isn't, the chords have moved again during the submission process.

If so, go to the column below, copy the lyrics to the first verse and put the chord symbol that FOLLOWS the word ABOVE the word.

       A D   A          E    A                  D
The lambs on the green hills, they sport and they play
    E         A    E   A    D       A   D

    A D            E      A       D
How sad is my heart when my love is away

I should mention that the song is in 3/4 time and the key is A.

If you listen to the link where Emmylou sings this song with Chieftains, you will hear her exercising a professional's technique on the word 'play.' She sings 'pleh' with a short e, as in 'red.' That's because the long A sound is a diphthong (eh-ee) and she simply stays with the first element of it on that very high, exposed, final note of the phrase.

In choirs, we do this in order to keep everyone on the same vowel. If we don't, the note sounds out of tune.

I have heard Steve Goodman, as well, change a final long A to short E at the end of a phrase.

The best sung version of this I have heard by a country mile is The Johnstones on 'The Best of Irish Folk'. Brilliant.

The old title for this was "Kitty Tyrrell". I think it was first published by the Gows, who identified it as Irish. (Kitty Tyrrell was a historical person, I forget who - a member of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy?). Bizarrely, Niel Gow then adapted the tune as "Niel Gow's Lament for His Second Wife", publishing it in the same book.

(Lemme get this straight. You not only couldn't be bothered thinking up a new tune to commemorate the poor woman, you rubbed it in by telling the world exactly where you got the one you ripped off?)

The men o' the forest askit o' me
Saying 'how many strawberries grow in the saut sea?
I answered them back wi' a tear in my ee
'How many ships sail in the forest?'

from ' I aince Lov'd a Lass' (not sure where this version of The Fause Bride) came from, was sung by the Corries back in my young days.

Not the 'Niel Gow' tune adaptation that Gordeanna McCulloch/the Clutha used for their Scottish version of the song/ballad
(When I saw my bonnie love tae the kirk go
Wi' bride and bride-maidens they made a fine show
And I followed on wi' a hert fu' of woe
For she'd gaen tae be wad tae anither)
