(With a few variations, but that's only natural.) I've been sitting here saying to myself, "I've played that! What IS it?" It is the first part of a tune in O'Neill's Music of Ireland called 'Caitilin Tirriall' or 'Catherine Tyrrell'. In my edition it is #337. Number 336 is another setting of it, which seems to be similar, higher, and fancier. I investigated the version in the DT, and words are nice but the MIDI has its quirks. I suggest finding MIDI's of 'Catherine Tyrrell' and seeing if they aren't more singable. Also, CT offers a little more variation. Dilydaly, I might find time to post chords. Are you still with us? What key do you like? Are you a soprano, alto, tenor or bass? The song moves stepwise a lot. Playing chords to it will require subtlety. |

None the less they were done nicely. It is a beatiful sung no matter how it's sung as long as it's sung well Barry |

As to what key i like or whether i'm a soprano etc i don't realy know.I try to sing the songs the way i hear them and most of the time that works.So if i had the chords to Emmy Lou Harris version i could always use the capo if needed.I just love folk music. |

When I try to establish what the notes are, the three different versions of the tune that I have heard all fight to be heard at once. However, I'm still working on it. The song moves stepwise quite a bit, which is not good for guitar chords. Also, it's got quite a range. So be warned. Keep checking back, 'cause I haven't given up yet. Meanwhile, if anybody's worked out the chords yet, please post. If the chords are too high or too low for you, Dilly, find the thread on the 'chord-circle thing' and transpose. |

If you listen to the link where Emmylou sings this song with Chieftains, you will hear her exercising a professional's technique on the word 'play.' She sings 'pleh' with a short e, as in 'red.' That's because the long A sound is a diphthong (eh-ee) and she simply stays with the first element of it on that very high, exposed, final note of the phrase. In choirs, we do this in order to keep everyone on the same vowel. If we don't, the note sounds out of tune. I have heard Steve Goodman, as well, change a final long A to short E at the end of a phrase. |

I think it was first published by the Gows, who identified it as Irish. (Kitty Tyrrell was a historical person, I forget who - a member of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy?). Bizarrely, Niel Gow then adapted the tune as "Niel Gow's Lament for His Second Wife", publishing it in the same book. (Lemme get this straight. You not only couldn't be bothered thinking up a new tune to commemorate the poor woman, you rubbed it in by telling the world exactly where you got the one you ripped off?) |
