01 Sep 09 - 08:39 PM (#2714170) Subject: london folk and luthiers From: ollaimh i'm in london for a few weeks and i wouldlike to find folk clubs, and greek luthiers, hurdy gurdy makers and parts and generally looking to ogle instruments and might even buy one. i do mostly celtic music but i have been known to go to english clubs when in the uk. any suggestions for clubs luthiers and places to hunt the wild instrument deal? |

03 Sep 09 - 09:36 AM (#2715353) Subject: RE: london folk and luthiers From: ollaimh we are staying near bayswater station. i imagine there is some folk cd shop with allkinds of fablous stuff not easily got in canada. the yellow pages are pretty terse here. i guess i'll go over to sharpe house tuesday and sing a canadian song or two. i looked in the market on portobello. few instruments, and fewer buskers.i used to busk there thirty five years ago. i did see a great fiddler in the tube near westminster station. i'd love to go to scotland too but it may be too far to work in. i'm a cape breton scotts gael with a little acadien mixed in. any scottish or irish music shops in london that anyome can recomend. either for instruments or recordings? ifound a hurdy gurdy string supplier!! got to get it up and running when i get home. |

For Greek instruments you're surely best contacting the maker directly. I know a gurdy maker in Glasgow (John Hunter) but he works very slowly and never has a finished instrument in stock waiting for a buyer. But he could make you exactly what you want if you have some special design in mind. |
