Keith Waterhouse died yesterday. I remember most fondly those humourous and perceptive columns that he wrote for the Mirror in the seventies. A great writer and exposer of pretentiousness and hypocrisy in all its forms. RIP Keith

That is bad news. His level headed, clear, compassionate writing was a great influence on me as I grew up.

I loved his stuff, like the "society for the abolition of the aberrant apostrophe". wonderful.

Grateful for him for "Mrs Pooter's Diary". Like so many of the best books it's out of print now, but it's worth trying to get hold of a copy.

Kevin, thanks for that link. It leads to some other interesting novels online. And that looks like an interesting "diary."

It's very strange but the day before yesterday I found myself thinking about Mr Waterhouse's very funny novel, Billy Liar - a book that I last read 30 or 40 years ago. I have a great hankering to read it again now - I wonder if it's still in print?
