QUITE EARLY MORNING
Words and Music by Pete Seeger, 1969

Don't you know it's darkest before the dawn
And it's this thought keeps me moving on
If we could heed these early warnings
The time is now quite early morning
If we could heed these early warnings
The time is now quite early morning

Some say that humankind won't long endure
But what makes them so doggone sure?
I know that you who hear my singing
Could make those freedom bells go ringing.
I know that you who hear my singing
Could make those freedom bells go ringing.

And so we keep on while we live
Until we have no, no more to give
And when these fingers can strum no longer
Hand the old banjo to young ones stronger.
And when these fingers can strum no longer
Hand the old banjo to young ones stronger.

So though it's darkest before the dawn
These thoughts keep us moving on.
Through all this world of joy and sorrow
We still can have singing tomorrow.
Through all this world of joy and sorrow
We still can have singing tomorrow.

I hope you're taking the tune from the MIDI on these MIDITXT tunes. The ABC is just an approximation, and doesn't do very well when there are ties and rests - this song has a lot of both.

Looking for lyrics for Pete Seeger's "Quiet Early Morning" - also recorded recently by Mary Staunton as "Bright Early Morning". Many thanks. Sean

QUITE EARLY MORNING
Pete Seeger

Don't you know it's darkest before the dawn
And it's this thought keeps me moving on
If we could heed these early warnings
The time is now quite early morning
If we could heed these early warnings
The time is now quite early morning

Some say that humankind won't long endure
But what makes them do doggone sure?
I know that you who hear my singing
Could make those freedom bells go ringing
I know that you who hear my singing
Could make those freedom bells go ringing

And so we keep on while we live
Until we have no, no more to give
And when these fingers can strum no longer
Hand the old banjo to young ones stronger
And when these fingers can strum no longer
Hand the old banjo to young ones stronger

So though it's darkest before the dawn
These thoughts keep us moving on
Through all this world of joy and sorrow
We still can have singing tomorrows
Through all this world of joy and sorrow
We still can have singing tomorrows

(Repeat first verse)
^^

I searched, but couldn't find the lyrics to this song on here. I just listened to Pete Seeger singing this song on an album of his called Banks of Marble And Other Songs (on Spotify). Did he write this song? Great lyrics (albeit slightly chilling words to hear when you've been reading NASA reports on melting ice-caps the same day). I could transcribe the words I guess - he sings them very clearly....

Looks like you can buy this track on Smithsonian Folkways and download it. Just type in "quite early one morning pete seeger". From the 30 seconds I heard on that website, it doesn't appear to be the tune of the traditional folksong--though Pete may have just changed it drastically, and that might be clear if you heard the whole song. Of course you can also buy the entire album.   Maybe through CAMSCO.

I heard the whole song (spotify lets you do that, and putatively pays some kind of performance royalty to the musician, if you're prepared to put up with the occasional advert).

I don't know the traditional folksong. Is it of the "as I strolled out one May morning..." variety? The Pete Seeger song is a call to action, a bit of a sort of We Shall Overcome, only one with a the sense of a clock ticking to it, if that makes sense. One for any green socialists out there...

The Smithsonian website shows a PDF of the back of this album, which has all the lyrics for each song.

This song is in the DT under the title QUITE EARLY MORNING, which is, I believe, its correct title.

The Smithsonian Folkways web site says QUITE EARLY ONE MORNING, but the pdf file with the lyrics says QUITE EARLY MORNING.
