Which song would you think is the most famous Scottish song? Is it Loch Lomond, Auld Lang Syne and My Bonnie lied over the Ocean? I mean, if one would have a Scottish party abroad, which songs would folks be able to sing?

I knew all three of those as a little boy in southern California in the 1940s. Also the Skye Boat Song.

Gotta be Auld Lang Syne - after all, it's sung all over the world every New Year.

I guess it all depends on who, where and when. For me, in no particular order:

A private recording of Roy Williamson singing "Flower of Scotland" - sad, pensive and completely different from the rugby/football match version we so often hear.

Hamish Henderson, already in his 80s, singing "Freedom Come-All-Ye" alone and unaccompanied standing on a huge stage at a predominantly rock concert with an audience of some 200,000 mostly young people, when you could have heard a hair, never mind a pin, drop. I wasn't the only one in tears!

Sheena Wellington singing "A Man's A Man For A' That" at the opening of the Scottish Parliament when everyone, completely unrehearsed, joined in the last verse:
Then let us pray that come it may
For come it will for a' that
That strength and worth o'er a' the earth
Shall bear the gree for a' that
For a' that and a' that
It's coming yet for a' that
That man tae man the world o'er
Shall brothers be for a' that.

And yes, "Auld Lang Syne" particularly when played by massed Pipes and Drums.

Famous? Perhaps for no-one except me but ceertainly what Scotland is all about.

Aye, but the question was, "Which song would you think is the most famous Scottish Song?"

NOT, "What's your favourite Scottish song?" :)

Dear oh Dear oh Dear. I made it very clear in the last sentence of my previous post that I consider these songs to be famous but cheerfully accept that is my personal opinion.
Why do some Mudcatters think it incumbent upon them to nitpick. I tend to the opinion that they are the reason many new, or potentially new Mudcatters never contribute - for fear of putting a foot wrong somewhere and being picked on for so doing.

Back to question of most famous. When my parents ran a London hotel in the 50s, with lots of foreign guests, and I would take my guitar into the bar, I would invariably be asked for either Loch Lomond or Annie Laurie [often both], wherever in the world they came from. So I nominate those two, along with Auld Lang Syne, which, as already pointed out, is sung worldwide at least once a year.

Scotland The Brave is a pretty famous song. I highly doubt that there's
a pipe and drum band that doesn't play that one.

But it isn't a song, Scotland The Brave, but a march. Only song I know to the tune would not, I hope, even be allowed on to this more-or-less, & allowing·for·the·vagaries·of·the·Folk, chaste site!

Most famous worldwide, would have to be a Burns song.
Perhaps "My love is like a red red rose" or "Ae fond kiss" ?

From: bill\sables

"Scotland The Brave" is a song.

SCOTLAND THE BRAVE

Hark when the night is fallin, hear, hear the pipes a'callin
Loudly and proudly callin' down thru the glen
There where the hills are sleepin', now feel the blood aleapin'
High as the spirits of the old highland men!
Towering in gallant fame,
Scotland the mountain hame!
High may your proud standards gloriously wave!
Land of the high endeavour, land of the shining river,
Land of my heart, forever, Scotland the brave!

High in the misty highlands, out by the purple islands,
Brave are the hearts that beat beneath Scottish skies!
Wild are the winds to meet you, staunch are the friends that greet you
Kind as the light that shines from fair maidens eyes!
Towering in gallant fame,
Scotland, my mountain hame!
High may your proud standards gloriously wave!
Land of the high endeavour, land of the shining river,
Land of my heart, forever, Scotland the brave!

Faroff in sunlit places, sad are the Scottish faces,
Yearnin' to feel the kiss of sweet Scottish rain!
Where tropic skies are beamin, love sets the heart adreamin',
Longin' and dreamin' for the homeland again!
Towering in gallant fame,
Scotland, my mountain hame!
High may your proud standards gloriously wave!
Land of the high endeavour, land of [the shinin' river,]*
Land of my heart, forever, Scotland the brave!

Auld lang syne must be sung by more people than any other Scottish song even if only once a year.

During the 19th Century it was probably Annie Laurie. Perhaps not now though.

IanC   Annie Laurie - It was still internationally famous in mid C20 - see my post of 8 Sep 1034.

Probably "Auld Lang Syne", "Annie Laurie" or "Loch Lomond". For what it's worth, I heard, or read, once (twenty years back, at least) that when the makers of the film "Brigadoon" were getting music composed for this ultra-realistic view of life in bonnie Scotland as it ever was, they only had knowledge of two songs, and apparently musicologists can tell which of the songs/tunes in the film were based on each example. Anyone else heard/read this?

Are we talking a song ABOUT Scotland or a song FROM Scotland/BY a Scottish author?

'Auld lang syne' would get my vote as the most famous, even though the majority of those who sing it every year can only remember 3 lines of it. And two of them are the same.

according to The Guinness Book of World Records recognizes ?Happy Birthday to You? as one of the three most popular songs in English language. The other two being ?Auld Lang Syne? and ?For He's a Jolly Good Fellow.?

So not just the most famous of scottish songs but one of the most popular songs in the english language!

Van ~~ It is just as much in the English Language imo as Christina Aguillera's horrible screechy rendition of The Star Spangled Banner which was part of the news this last few days, even without considering the boo-boo she made of one of the lines.
