For me, in no particular order: A private recording of Roy Williamson singing "Flower of Scotland" - sad, pensive and completely different from the rugby/football match version we so often hear. Hamish Henderson, already in his 80s, singing "Freedom Come-All-Ye" alone and unaccompanied standing on a huge stage at a predominantly rock concert with an audience of some 200,000 mostly young people, when you could have heard a hair, never mind a pin, drop. I wasn't the only one in tears! Sheena Wellington singing "A Man's A Man For A' That" at the opening of the Scottish Parliament when everyone, completely unrehearsed, joined in the last verse: Then let us pray that come it may For come it will for a' that That strength and worth o'er a' the earth Shall bear the gree for a' that For a' that and a' that It's coming yet for a' that That man tae man the world o'er Shall brothers be for a' that. And yes, "Auld Lang Syne" particularly when played by massed Pipes and Drums. Famous? Perhaps for no-one except me but ceertainly what Scotland is all about. Eddie |

I made it very clear in the last sentence of my previous post that I consider these songs to be famous but cheerfully accept that is my personal opinion. Why do some Mudcatters think it incumbent upon them to nitpick. I tend to the opinion that they are the reason many new, or potentially new Mudcatters never contribute - for fear of putting a foot wrong somewhere and being picked on for so doing. Eddie |

When my parents ran a London hotel in the 50s, with lots of foreign guests, and I would take my guitar into the bar, I would invariably be asked for either Loch Lomond or Annie Laurie [often both], wherever in the world they came from. So I nominate those two, along with Auld Lang Syne, which, as already pointed out, is sung worldwide at least once a year. |

For what it's worth, I heard, or read, once (twenty years back, at least) that when the makers of the film "Brigadoon" were getting music composed for this ultra-realistic view of life in bonnie Scotland as it ever was, they only had knowledge of two songs, and apparently musicologists can tell which of the songs/tunes in the film were based on each example. Anyone else heard/read this? |
