This Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 8:00pm, the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club Concert Series at the Fair Lawn Community Center will open our 2009-2010 concert series with the acoustic duo The Folk Brothers, featuring singer-songwriters Jack Hardy and David Massengill. Opening the evening will be traditional singer Debra Cowan.

Jack and David are two of America's finest songwriters. They have known each other since they both moved to New York City in the mid-seventies, Jack from Colorado, David from Tennessee. In this era of pop-driven acoustic music, these two have dual-handedly kept the folk tradition alive in songwriting. Over the years, Jack and David have shared many a stage together at clubs and festivals, been members of the weekly songwriters workshop since its inception, and worked on the Fast Folk Magazine together.   Now, they are performing together as The Folk Brothers.

Their choice of material for this project draws from their own greatest hits such as David's "On the Road to Fairfax County," "Rider on an Orphan Train" and "My Name Joe" to Jacks' "Tinkers Coin," "I Ought to Know" and "The Zephyr" to covering songs of their friends and mentors such as Dave Van Ronk, Paul Siebel, Tim Hardin and Utah Philips, as well as covering traditional songs.    They are also noted as being great tellers of tales.

Opening the evening will be Debra Cowan. She is an exceptional interpreter of traditional and contemporary songs, using that ability to communicate the story within the song. Her rich voice conjures images of stony grey Celtic castles, green and rolling English landscapes, and humorous American urban scenes. Just as the audience is left spellbound after Debra presents a woeful traditional ballad of love gone wrong, she immediately brings laughter with an outrageous comic song.

This will be a memorable evening of great harmonies, moving songs, funny songs, songs to sing along with - and a perfect reminder of how just how good folk music can be.

Tickets for the evening are only $20 - just $17 if you are a Hurdy Gurdy member. You can purchase tickets online through our website at www.hurdygurdyfolk.org or at the box office at the Fair Lawn Community Center on the night of the concert. The Fair Lawn Community Center   is located at 10-10 20th Street in Fair Lawn, NJ.
