in O Neills music of ireland,
There are several outcries,the Connaught ,the Munster etc,anyone know any history of these tunes,were they played for special occasions.

O'Neill 'borrowed' his outcries from Joseph Walker's "Historical Memoirs of the Irish Bards" (1786)

The Laments Mici 'Cumba' O' Suileabhean played in Gol na mBan san Ár are thought to be similar pieces. Which could give an indication how to approach pieces like that.

Wow. That's amazing.

There's a phrase in there that reminds me of the ground from the pibroch "The Lament for the Union". Might be worth looking at Allan Macdonald's "Dastirum" to see if it throws any light on the Irish genre.
