13 Sep 09 - 04:09 PM (#2722907) Subject: Tech: Manipulating images in Microsoft Word From: Fergie Hi all I'm working on a little pet project. I want to produce a sort of novelty broadsheet. The lyrics will be printed unto one side of a standard A4 sheet. The sheet will then be folded into an origami style envelope with the lyrics on the inside. I want the outside of the envelope to be decorated front and back with images and text boxes that relate to the lyrics printed inside. Now to do this requires that the images and textboxes be printed more or less diagonally onto the sheet and I cannot work out how to do this in MS Word. Can some kind Mudcatter give me advice or guidance of how to achive this affect? Fergus |

Any reasonably good graphics editor should be able to rotate an image for you. You can create an image of the text, then rotate it (45 degrees?) then either print directly from the graphics program or export to an image file which you can load in to MS Word. Being a free software enthusiast, I use The GIMP for graphics. It's available for Windows, and free. There's lots of others, of varying power, ease of use and price. Anahata |

13 Sep 09 - 06:49 PM (#2723008) Subject: RE: Tech: Manipulating images in word From: Andrez Hi Fergie, Yes, Word is not the best program for this type of job but if you have to do it, you can free rotate a graphic image. The commands are to be found on the Drawing toolbar: View menu> Toolbars>Drawing>Rotate or Flip. You can also change the alignment of text from horizontal to vertical via the Formal Menu>Text Direction. I dont think you can rotate a text box itself. If you want to have the whole thing on a 45 degree angle you might be better off making the entire item in a graphics program of any kind and then importing into Word. You would then be able to rotate the graphic image to any desired angle. Cheers, Andrez |

Then you can print each 'page' as an image...even the text would be part of the image. (If you need a good, free program to capture the text AS an image, Google MWSnap) |

Select "behind text". This is will create the ability to move and rotate the object in any direction on the page. At the the top of graphic or textbox you will see a little line topped with a small green dot to rotate, Grab that dot to rotate the object in any direction. Click in centre of graphic (see the crossed arrows) and drag mouse to move to where you like on the page. You can also order (layer or overlap) and group both textboxes and images from the DRAW tool bar usually at bottom left of your desktop. |

I have a newsletter that has a text box containing a graphic: an Ad actually. So If I select the picture in the text box and look at it via Format>Picture>Layout, the next window shows the text wrapping style as in line with text. It is not possible to change this to the behind text option you indicated. The selection will just not change. If I select the text box and go to Format>Text Box> Format Text Box, I can change the wrapping style to "Behind text" but having done this no green dot for rotating appears other than the standard vertical/horizontal text box resizing options. I know the dot to which you are referring as I can rotate other graphic images but not those contained in a text box. If I look at the rotating options elsewhere the menu items are all greyed out and so I am not allowed to rotate either the text box or the object in it. If I could make it work, it would be a useful trick to be able to use at times so I would welcome a few more details. It might also be useful to know which version of Word you are using and which platform it is running on. Cheers, Andrez PS: I noticed one difference. If I paste in a fresh graphic, it appears selected with eight little hollow selection boxes. This image can then be rotated freely using the rotate options. Now if the same graphic is placed into a text box the selection boxes around the graphic change to solid boxes inside the graphic and image is no longer rotatable. So playing with the arranging options i.e. sending text or images to the front or the back plus rotating free images you can get some variations in layout as well. |
