This is a link to Susan Boyle's youtube channel with the audio from her CD.

Susan Boyle, WILD HORSES

I like it. Even better than I expected.

I wonder if the critic from the link back when is still insisting that she "sings as if all notes were created equal", or if anyone else in the world ever had any idea what he meant by that.

Alice have you got a stop watch out to see how long it takes someone to spit and snarl at us for liking her a lot?

There is audio. Maybe you need to turn up the volume?

Love the song, love the voice....

Don't like the arrangement or the pianist, and the production is bland - they've compressed the life out of her voice.

I think she deserves better.

Me, too, Smokey. I don't even like the tempo. She does still have an incredible voice, though not something I'd listen to often. (Not meant as a spit or a snarl:-)

Yes, it's like a dirge, but I still like it.

This is my Wild Horses third track down on the player... be patient it does open in the end.

I'll have to compare them!

Your link had some spaces in it, Sal. I deleted them, and now the link should work for everyone.

Your site is in My Space, and I'm not a member. Is it anyplace else? (I have too many passwords to manage already!)

Considering all of the bad press and nonsense over the last few months, I'm glad to hear that Susan can simply sing a beautiful song and have a lovely voice--not a one-time wonder. I hope she'll break free of those who are controlling the performance and really get to belt a few out.

Maybe a Mudelf can correct the typo in the thread title to "Boyle" from Bolye?

SRS, I don't think you have to be a member to listen to myspace, do you? I am, but I don't ever sign in when I go to listen to someone's music.

Nice version in a tin pan alley kind of way. This version by GP will always be the definitive one for me; gritty, heartfelt, and dark, as the lyrics are. Boyle has a great voice, but I'm not sure this is the song for her.

Drowning in synthesizers, the 21st century equivalent to 50's soupy strings.   You'd think by now she would have some say in her own arrangements, so it seems reasonable that this must be fine with her.

And as has been noted, a dirge.

How many of you who like this rendition will buy her album when it comes out?

A really good voice--still being squandered.

Thanks, Joe, that did work.

Ron, you're very optimistic. Her first recording ever after riding a skyrocket to fame, and you think she is able to wrest control of her arrangements from Simon Cowell et al? I don't think so. She needs to get her sea legs first.

Kylie Minogue reckons her 'own' voice didn't start appearing on records until she put her second album out (can't show a direct link to that, but it's referenced in the BBC website quiz here).

Simon Cowell will squeeze every millilitre of use out of Susan Boyle as quickly as possible and then drop her like a stone as soon as she starts getting any ideas of 'control' or 'having a say'. Great voice, bloody good luck to her, but she's just another rabbit caught in the headlights of the X Factor juggernaut.

Lovely controlled but natural vibrato, nice and somewhat original inflections, no huge slurs, intelligible words, breaths in the right places, no extra vocal noises, good range without strain, sounds like she means every word, altogether a worthy listen except for the schmaltzey production standards.

They need to take some chances with her arrangements, after all, the accompaniment wasn't written by Ralph Vaughan Williams and can't be carried by supreme harmony. The plodding piano and mushy strings are second rate, and don't seem to flatter her character or her voice. There's also one stupid sounding piano chord, I'll have to listen again to identify it.

Peace, Mooh.

Quite agreeable - but it didn't move me. Could be the arrangement as has been noted, but also to do with the fact that I don't think she understands the song, I don't believe she has experienced what she is singing about and so she doesn't relate to it - or to me.

Quite honestly I don't think this is remotely what Susan Boyle should have sung next :-)

Here's Keef "singing" it as he wrote it and as it should be sung (with the help of a few friends at a Gram Parsons tribute concert)

Re the Crowell Control factor; What a miserable excuse for visual content for the video. I don't have the heart to recheck right now, but I don't think it ever closed in quite as tight on Susan as it did on the faces of the judges. LOOK AT US! AREN'T WE WONDERFUL! WE GAVE HER HER BIG CHANCE! With all the possibility the song suggests for decent imagery.

She's got a wonderful voice, and I wish her well. However, when I listened to 'Wild Horses,' I couldn't understand a word.

When I found a page with the lyrics printed, I was disappointed that actual wild horses don't come into it at all. It's just another song about some loser's unhappy emotions.

I was hoping for something new on the pop scene...

I have a professional musician friend whose atandard comment for a performance he doesn't personally like is 'they're good at what they do'
Well, Susan Boyle is 'good at what she does'; however, if you don't happen to like what she does it's not spitting or snarling at those who do and surely everyone has the equal right to an opinion?

"if you don't happen to like what she does it's not spitting or snarling at those who do"

Aye, a bit over the top!
I don't personally dig the SuBo myself, but I have no thoughts or feelings whatsoever about those who do. Why on earth would I?

I thought her Wild Horses was quite nice - it showed a lighter more elegant side to her range, which I personally preferred to the show tunes. She has a voice that would be better in light opera or choral to my thoughts however, and I don't think this song was a good choice for her at all, as it's a song about passion and pain. It felt like "singing by numbers" - lacking in emotional tone due to a seeming human disengage.

Apologies if my comment seemed to imply that no one has a right to criticize Susan Boyle's singing, or even to dislike it outright. I was just remembering how, not so long ago, people were absolutely raked over the coals for mentioning that they enjoyed her.

She does have an interesting voice, but it should be remembered that this is recorded sound you are listening to, and it's been 'produced' in a studio. If she hit any bum notes they will be tweeked before a final mix that's for sure.

She sounds a bit like Barbara Striesand I think.

Susan Boyle wasn't allowed to let the power in her voice loose in this song. Striesand doesn't experience such constraints in her recordings. Give Susan time, she'll get past the "handlers" and do it her way. Like she did the first night of the competition.
