Or you find yourself la la la huming them ("la la la" because you can't really remember the words but you know you'd remember them if you did). ** I think it's usually the tune that makes a song stick in my head, or the words to the song struck some personal chord or the other (pardon the accidental pun). ** And sometimes when I hear a song, I wonder what sub-title might fit it. (Am I the only one that does that? Please humor me and say "Of course not.") ** This thread is all about songs and the pretend sub-titles you would give them if you could-and of course here on Mudcat you can. I'll start the ball bouncing with a carchy song that has stuck with me after I first saw the video for it on YouTube earlier this evening. I think this song deserves its very own Mudcat thread, but if I had just written its title, probably no one would have opened that thread. After all, who ever heard of a song called "We're Number 37"? I confess. This is a tricky way to get y'll to listen to that song. But after I heard that song, I started thinking of some serious or funny/serious sub-titles for it. And since sharing is caring, I thought I'd give you this opportunity to not only hear this song, but also come up with your own sub-titles for it. I'll post the hyperlink and lyrics to "We're Number 37" song in my next post. And I'll post a couple of definitely unofficial sub-titles that I thought of for that song in my post after that one. If you have any sub-titles for that song, or other songs, please post them-along with their real song title/s. Hyperlinks to the song title you post and/or its lyrics would also be great but isn't mandatory. And if a song makes you think of another song or a children's rhyme, or a poem or book title or a cartoon, then that's another form of a sub-title. The thing is, my memory of that "O Sole Mio" is inextricably connected with the scene of Alfalfa singing it in those old American "Our Gang Comedy" television shows. How's that for song pollution? |

Sometimes the main title practically disappears, especially if the popular subtitle is in the song. I'd expect more people would claim to know "Danny Boy" than would recognise "Londonderry Air" from the title. Same perhaps with "Swanee River" for "Old Folks at Home," or "Bicycle Built for Two" for "Daisy Bell." |

The jingle says "Heinz catsup-the taste that is worth the wait.") Well, it's a low down cryin shame that the USA is only 37th in the quality of its heath care. And it's a low down cryin shame that we-the citizens of the good ole USA-have had to wait so many years with keen anticipation for what we hope will be QUALITY health care reform and not just gifts to the private insurance industry. Hope springs eternal. (There's probably a song about that, but I can't think of it right now.) |

This tune was already an existing folk song but in 1960 Lonnie Donegan decided that he would bring in new words. Now most people sing the 1960 song 'My ol' man's a dustman' but some folks from schools sing the 1920s song and the first song 'The Elder Dempster line' but not as much. When I went to school I never did sing these 2 songs before 1986. When we used the tune it was always the 1960 one. The 1939 song 'Wimoweh' was also 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight', a 1961 hit for The Tokens, and the tune was sung in the 1994 film 'The Lion King'. In the list of songs no one mentioned 'Love Me Tender' which Elvis claimed to have written in 1956, but what folks don't know is that this tune was called Aura Lee, which is still sung at schools today and some folks' gigs but most folks when they hear the tune it is 'Love Me Tender'. |
