This morning it was "Is the frog the farmer's friend..." as sung by Henry Gibson on Laugh In. I haven't thought of that silly thing in years! |

18 Sep 09 - 09:05 PM (#2726411) Subject: RE: Obit: Henry Gibson, comedian from Laugh In From: Jeri Tyrone was Artie Johnson, Kendall. The sweet guy who read the poem on Laugh In is someone who I appreciate now but was too nice when I was younger. I was in one of those phases in which politeness was fine, but that vulnerable happiness just seemed weak. The phase lasted about 30 years. These days, I think we need sweet Henry Gibsons and fewer spoilers in the world. Gibson kept popping up in various roles, completely unexpected (by me, at least). I remember he was in 'Charmed' as a 'sandman' in addition to some of the roles previously mentioned in this thread. He never played a character I didn't like, and I want to believe that innocence of spirit was a fundamental part of him. |

20 Sep 09 - 02:56 PM (#2727491) Subject: RE: Obit: Henry Gibson, comedian from Laugh In From: robomatic There are many stars who do not appear as lasting or prominent, but are actually both, because they appear in many guises under many lights and shine not necessarily brightly, but with color and substance made intense through their brevity. Henry Gibson shone with brief but memorable distinction on many occasions, with humor and succinct eloquence. From his cheerful poesy on laught in to his disgruntled judgeship on Boston Legal, he brought salt and tang to every appearance. RIP |

I dearly wish I could have seen the performance, which review I read later on. It was an opera company's Die Fledermaus, here in the US (probably West Coast) in English translation -- and if you know what liberties are taken with Die Fledermaus, you know that ANYTHING is possibly. Whatever Arte Johnson played (Frosch, maybe?) in the production, he had spoken dialogue added in, and the reviewer noted that his character, along with some other Fledermaus character, spoke mostly English but threw in German words here and there, with the two of them stammering and struggling to pronounce "G - G - G'm - G'm't - G'mttl' -- Gem'm'm'UETlichkeit!" |
