Did any of our friends survive the recent Sydney sandstorm? It looked rather awesome viewed on the morning news.

Think of it in terms of a Murdock / Turner mirror elimination... Perhaps this will cheer you up...

Waves hand feebly from sandpit (formerly known as garden): we're still here! We stayed inside and kept the cats in too. Garden has a new heap of topsoil that it didn't have a couple of days ago.

My stepson reports it to be non-dangerous but looking very like the set of a 1960s SF film about Mars.

My daughter is in Wollongong, and described it as looking like that Schwarzenegger Mars film; 'Total Recall'? I forget the title.

Hmm. Alarmingly reminiscent of the US dustbowl period.

Sydney Dustbowl Ballad.

If you ain't got the do re mi boys,
If you ain't got the do re mi
You better go back to beautiful Alice
Murrumbidgee, Gundagai, or old Mudgee
Sydney is a garden of Eden
A paradise to live in and see
But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot.
Since it's become the new Red Sea.

Sorry Woody, and I tried hard to get Slim Dusty in there, but failed.

I heard that the dust was so thick that millions of rabbits burrowed straight up through it!!

And when it settled, it rained rabbits for a week.

On the news last night there was an emergency room doctor talking about the joggers coming in with breathing problems as a result of the dust.

Makes me wonder where their heads were at, to even think of trying to run in that sort of atmosphere.

In Queensland, it also reached Brisbane and Toowoomba - and later up near Cairns... reached over to NZ ... the Satellite photos are interesting... now where did we put Texas down and lose it? ... :-P

there were pics on the ABC site of similar loonies on a very red Bondi Beach!

whne I was wandering around taking my pics, lots of folks were walking around with hankies or scarves over their mouths.

The wind is very strong here at present (10.23am Saturday) and we can smell dust in the air, but it's nowhere near as bad as Wednesday's happening.

Sandra...I'm sure many award-winning photographs will emerge from the dust this week that won't even need to be photoshopped for special effects!

Cheers
JennieG.......10 days until we fly to Canada, woo hoo!

A certain amount of it has settled here in NZ.

It's bad enough that the aussies come here, but now the whole bloody country is trying to immigrate!

Uh, Gurney, would the last Kiwi to leave NZ, please turn off the lights. :-)

About time we sent something back to NZ. With the population drain, NZ is probably floating a bit high in the water, so Oz is just helping out a neighbour.

Helen, as a previous NZ prime minister said when asked for comment about immigration (NZ to Oz,) "That should increase the IQ of BOTH countries."

What Piggy Muldoon said about migration of NZers to Oz was, in fact, "That should increase the average IQ of BOTH countries."

But most of them came to indulge their familiarity with what they knew best; sheep. Shearing, that is, with wide combs. But I can't recall any songs about the issue, only off-colour jokes that aren't worth repeating.

The wind still is blowing a howling gale but the dust seems to have passed....for now, at least. I have been out singing with my choir at an outside gig in a park, fortunately the stage was a marquee with solid back and sides so we had some shelter from the wind while we were singing. However now I am home, and I am staying home out of the wind.
