Regarding Gillian Welch

She is amazing. I (native connoisseur of all things southern) admit sheepishly that I was surprised to learn that she was not from the southern Appalachians. (hope you got to see her and Rawlings on Austin City Limits recently). There's got to be more to her story than I've heard. There are subtleties in her language and phrasing that could not have been learned entirely from records. It would be like me going to Ireland and convincing an audience that I was one of the Clancy Brothers. Anybody know anything?

Chet

Great taste, Chet! None better out there ~~ too bad those radio phonies haven't got the time of day for her and people like Kelly Willis, Tish Hinojosa, and Iris DeMent.(my list is a lot longer than that, but you get the picture) Here are a bunch of interesting links for Gillian and David.

Gillian, David and Emmylou Harris were on one of the TV late night shows last week. they sang a Gram Parsons song. It was quite spartan compared to the usual fare on those shows (sorry I don't remember if it was Leno, Letterman or Conan). I also saw that threesome do a couple songs on a Grand Ol Opry telecast not too long ago. I think her "Down In the Hole" is one of the bleakest songs I have heard.

I could listen to Gillian Welch for hours on end. "I Am An Orphan" took my breath away the first time I heard it. The next time anyone knows beforehand when she's going to be on the tube, or elsewhere, please post a thread to that effect ... thanks ... moonchild

This could have gone unnoticed in the list of references I gave. The sympatico url seems to have disappeared in the short time since I listed it. However, here is a new one, but no guarantees!

Well, it is definitely aggravating, but NOW, the sympatico url is working again. So now you have your choice of two urls on August 7. Hopefully, at least one of them will be working on that day.
