I don't know how many of you are listening to the BBC Radio 4 series, A History of Private Life, but I'm finding it quite interesting. The BBC has a page specifically on the music used . I'm a bit surprised that the researcher is, in turn, surprised that she, "had to dig deep into the large body of balladry and folk song" because, "much of the music that has been preserved, particularly from the 17th and 18th centuries, was institutional music."

Gee - I would have thought, given the topic, that folk/trad song would be one's first port of call.

Still, nice series and available on the iplayer.
