ATT: FOLK BOOKERS: Crabtree and Mills

Tonight, after finishing in the studio, I had the distinct pleasure to witness my dear friends, Paul Mills and Joanne Crabtree, in concert. If you are a folk club organizer/booker, or any kind of booker of folk music, Big Mick wants to heartily recommend this duo. These two, quite simply are masters of entertaining a crowd, and demonstrating songwriting and musical artistry. They have such a strong raport with each other, and clearly they have the experience and love of what they do. Joanne has written some amazing songs and covers the spectrum in her lyrics and in her subject matter. There is no navel gazing to be found in this stuff. It is topical, yet there is plenty of study on the human condition. Paul is an absolute master of the fretboard and the fingerstyle approach. He can do the pretty tinkly bits, and the next minute hit you between the eyes with a driving blues lick. He is tight, and knows how to make the music interesting, varying his style and runs to keep you in the game. When you witness them together, you witness two folks that understand stagecraft, their gifts, and the audience in front of them. Incredible show, and the CD's they sell are nothing short of phenomenal.

Book them if you have any sense at all. I guarantee the crowd will grow exponentially from one concert to the next.

All the best,

Mick

The other thing that is amazing between these two is the interplay. They clearly draw on life experiences and relate to one another very well. This adds up to a show (and this is rare in my opinion) where you enjoy the patter between songs nearly as much as the songs themselves. Truly an act that will draw a larger crowd each time it plays. Once you experience their act, you look forward to the next time.

All the best,

Mick

Dear Mick: It was fabulous connecting with you again in Toronto. As you know, Paul and I have only recently begun thinking about taking Crabtree&Mills across the border. What a lovely surprise to see you are extolling our virtues here in this wonderful forum! Thank you!
Love, Joanne
