03 Oct 09 - 12:43 PM (#2737360) Subject: RE: BS: Dog gathers keepsakes waiting for family From: CarolC The subtext, of course, being that another family lost their home due to medical expenses, which is a crime. My parents had a shelty who used to go into everyone's bedroom at night and take one personal item belonging to each family member, put them all in a pile at the top of the stairs that overlooked the front door, and sleep on them while guarding the door. |

03 Oct 09 - 04:51 PM (#2737532) Subject: RE: BS: Dog gathers keepsakes waiting for family From: MAG Reality is, even before the recent crash, the majority of bankruptcies here (U.S.) were due to crushing medical bills. You'd think the banks would be pro universal coverage. And small businesses. And independents who can't afford insurance. Sorry for the thread hijack. Great (wrenching) story. |

It'd be nice if the media would do a follow-up on just WHY they had to find other housing...was it insurance companies not wanting to pay up, medical companies not having any sympathy, etc.? |

I found that bluddy sad. For US cynics of free public care (or whatever it is they object to), that story would have had a genuine happy ending in the UK (Canada, France, Oz etc.) and been on the news, 'cos that dog would have been sent straight home to where that family had always lived and remained. |

04 Oct 09 - 10:36 AM (#2737939) Subject: RE: BS: Dog gathers keepsakes waiting for family From: Alice I just saw the news report of it on Sunday Morning on CBS. The dog was a real lover, very waggy tail and kissy. It was great to see the dog greeting the family again. They didn't cover the whole story, though, leaving out that the medical billa ruined their finances so that they can't keep her now. |

04 Oct 09 - 10:42 AM (#2737945) Subject: RE: BS: Dog gathers keepsakes waiting for family From: katlaughing Folks, I think we may be jumping to conclusions. It said, Unfortunately, it was a bittersweet reunion because of the accident and the medical expenses, the Kelly family has had to temporarily relocate to a place that doesn't allow dogs. So, it does say "temporary" and also "because of the accident" which I took to possibly mean because of injuries which may cause them to need to be closer to rehab facilities. I don't know, just guessing. Of course, the medical costs could be the sole reason, but the "temporary" makes me think there's more to it, esp. since they showed one family member in a wheelchair. Regardless, I hope they and Ella will be rejoined ASAP. |

04 Oct 09 - 10:50 AM (#2737951) Subject: RE: BS: Dog gathers keepsakes waiting for family From: katlaughing OH well, one could hope...seems I was wrong. This is from an article calling for a "landlord with heart:" But sadly, the family has incurred serious medical expenses as a result of the accident and has had to temporarily relocate to a place that doesn't allow dogs. Ella is currently staying with Kathy until she can be permanently reunited with her family. Donations to help Ella and the rest of the animals at Love Me Tender Animal Rescue can be sent to 4592 Only Rd., Only, TN 37140 |

04 Oct 09 - 10:56 AM (#2737955) Subject: RE: BS: Dog gathers keepsakes waiting for family From: Alice The Sunday Morning report went to the site with Kathy, the rescuer, and showed the nest of items in the grass that the dog had gathered. She took photos of the nest and then gathered up the items and took them home to try to find a clue. That dog was bonded to her family pack! |

04 Oct 09 - 11:16 AM (#2737969) Subject: RE: BS: Dog gathers keepsakes waiting for family From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) One of the things I thought that was very touching, was reading through some of the comments on the first link. So many people (despite a few less pleasant comments) wanting to offer financial support straight out of their own pockets, to help reunite the whole family again. Stories such as this, help to remind one of the innate kindness and warmth of most people towards their fellow man when in trouble. |

05 Oct 09 - 03:00 PM (#2739031) Subject: RE: BS: Dog gathers keepsakes waiting for family From: SharonA Poor doggy, and poor family. I hope that at least some family members are able to visit the dog, or that the shelter workers are able to bring the dog to the family for visits, while the living-quarters situation plays itself out. This story reminds me of one on a somewhat-related note: my brother and his family came to a decision to sell their newly-purchased, newly-constructed house and move to another one because of a medical situation. My brother had fallen outdoors and had hyperextended/broken both knees, and as he was recuperating at home he developed complications that required him to be taken back to the hospital by ambulance. Because of the way his house was constructed, the EMT's could not bring their gurney up the zig-zagging staircase leading up from the front door to the living room, nor up the stairs to the back-door's deck, and the landscaping prevented them from using any windows. After that experience, the family decided that they never wanted a repeat, so their primary concern as they house-hunted was to find a residence with easy access to all floors in case of future emergencies. In particular, they were concerned about my sister-in-law's elderly father who lives with them. They ended up in an older home than the one they'd had, but they're much happier there! |

Construction classes should have a unit in designing for patient transport. disabilities are taken into account in public buildings where there is a law about this. It should be included in private homes as well. |
