A group called The Cumberlands sing a song of that name on the album Bridging The Gap (just over half way down the page). The track is also on Amazon mp3 for download: The Devil's Tramping Ground. You can hear a clip on the Amazon page, so could you tell us if that's the right song?

This is probably incomplete, but I think I've got a chorus and two verses, not necessarily in the right order. I transcribed them from sound samples.

The songwriter, Tommy Faile, is famous for a couple of other spooky stories, PHANTOM 309 (which he wrote) and BROWN MOUNTAIN LIGHT (which he recorded but didn't write). Click here.

DEVIL'S TRAMPING GROUND
Tommy Faile

CHORUS: Stay away. Don't be found
When darkness falls on the devil's tramping ground.

Here is a story, true so they say,
Handed down through history and talked about today:
A barren spot of earth, not a living thing there found,
Known far and wide as the devil's tramping ground.

...

When darkness falls on the strange barren path,
Satan comes to walk tonight and plan his evil wrath.
He curses all that's good, and at sin he laughs with glee.
They say he comes here every night but no one waits to see.

[Recorded by The Cumberlands (Harold Thom, Betty Thom, Jim Smoak) on "Bridging the Gap" Copper Creek CD #2002, 2003.]

The Devil's Tramping Ground is not just any barren place, but one particular barren place. See Wikipedia.
