New Sailortown Days CD-Charley Noble

My new Sailortown Days CD is now available for review and purchase. The songs selection is similar to my previous CD's, nautical poems from C. Fox Smith, John Masefield, Burt Franklin Jenness that I've adapted for singing. Other nautical songs by Ron Baxter (UK) and Rudy Sunde (NZ) that I'm reinforcing because I think they're fine songs. There's also Gerry Hallom's arrangement of the Henry Lawson poem "The Outside Track. Then there's a favorite song by Jon Campbell that I've adapted for Sidney, Australia. Micci Perry's fine song commemorating the Lady Washington's encounter with a recalcitrant railway bridge is also included. Finally there's a working waterfront protest song which commemorates a battle waged along the Portland waterfront in the 1980's, and a song I composed that has nothing to do with the sea but would be nice to sing around a camp fire.

Here's the track list:

1    Sea Traders
2    Mobile Bay
3    Tramps (Coaling Shanty)
4    Auckland to the Bluff
5    A Ballad of the Old Navy
6    The News in Daly's Bar
7    By the Old Pagoda Anchorage
8    Frederick's of Wooloomooloo
9    Concrete and Glass
10   The Traveller
11   The Wreck of the Lady Washington
12   Sailor's Farewell
13   Mother Carey
14   The Outside Track
15   Leave her Johnnie
16   Evening Shadows Fall

Total Time: 66:01

Full lyrics, notes, and MP3 samples of first verse and chorus are available from my website: Click here for lyrics and MP3 Sample!

This CD as well as my other three are all available for order for $15 each, postage included anywhere in the known universe.

Charley, I'm so glad that you liked 'Chanty for steam' so much that you've recorded it. Thank you. I'll pass the message on to Chris Lock, though she'll probably see the thread anyway. Ron

Ron-

Hmmm, what is its correct title?

I'll be mailing you out some copies later this week.

It's a fine song and a favorite at the Press Room sessions.

Thanks!

Give "Evening Shadows Fall" a listen to. You might find a use for it.

OldDude-

Thanks!

Jon Campbell was by this weekend for a concert at the Maine Maritime Museum, along with West Coast fisher poet Dave Desmond. After listening to the Australian version of his "Frederick's Of Gaililee" that I "collected" he decided to include it on his forthcoming greatest hits covered by others recording. I'll be in great company!

Somehow I missed this. We go to your website to order it? Is it available thru Mudcat and Camsco?
I need you to come out here and tell my Portland shanty singing friends that it's CY-sil-lee, not sis-sil-lee. They don't believe me.
Sounds like you've got some great songs on there. I'll go give it a listen.
Blessings,
Barbara

Thanks, Barbara, for reviving this thread. It was definitely down for the count.

Give a listen to "Mother Carey." I think you'll like that one, but don't listen to the "News in Daly's Bar" unless you've had a couple of stiffiners.

Just working my way through the audio samples - wonderful stuff altogether! It's work to be proud of, Charley.

About the News In Daly's Bar -- I sing Ten Men Hauling on the Lee Fore Brace, and I assume it's about the same scene. People at the pub have asked me to back off on it, it's such a downer. And, of course, it doesn't have a chorus.
Looks like I'm going to have to pony up for some of your CDs Charley.
Blessings,
Barbara

Meself-

We're still doing some editing on this recording, in between sending it out in small batches and getting reaction. I also need to do the full concertina tracks on a couple of songs. And I'm puzzling over what harmonies would work better with "Sea Traders," not convinced that what I've done works well enough.

Everyone likes "Mobile Bay" and "By the Pagoda Anchorage."

Barbara-

I absolutely love "News in Daly's Bar" but one really needs to pick the time to sing it, and then it has an amazing impact; the original poem is twice as long! "Lee Fore Brace" has a similar impact but is a much more compact song.

Everyone likes the last track "Evening Shadows Fall," including my former Ethiopian students. But it has nothing to do with the sea; it's not even in the key of C!

Got some nice feedback from Rudy Sunde of The Maritime Crew from Auckland, New Zealand. He was responding to my rendition of his fine song "Auckland to the Bluff":

"Frankly, Charles, I am delighted with your interpretation. You have changed the tune a little but this has, if anything, improved the song. I have always sung the song unaccompanied so it was most interesting to hear your banjo there. It sounded really good. I must try that myself. You left off a verse but that is no matter. I always enjoy singing that song. It must be one of my most popular ones. Audiences always enjoy it too so I hope that you get similar satisfaction when you sing it to audiences. Thanks too for the dedication. Hey, I'm in great company there! Thanks again, Charles. You have given me a great lift today..."

It's always a little scary when you reinterpret someone's song and Rudy could not be more gracious. I only wish I could fly on down to New Zealand and spend an evening swapping more songs with him and his crew.

Charlie,

Just to clarify the title of the Ron Baxter song on your new CD. When he gave me a handwritten copy of the poem, there was just one word on the top of the page - Tramps. I put the tune to it and recorded it with our group on our CD "Rolling the Whole World Round". Talking to Ron about it afterwards he told me he had thought of it as "A Chanty for Steam" whilst he was writing it but as I said, the word Tramps was on his manuscript, so Tramps it became on our CD!!! (With Ron's blessing of course)! So, in answer to your question, it would seem that both titles apply.

Anyway, glad that you like it enough to have recorded it (Ron emailed me to tell me), and good luck with the new CD.

Chris-

You folks, Four 'n' Aft, came up with a fine musical arrangement for Ron's lyrics. There's no way that I and my clones can do it justice but we may succeed in bringing it to the attention of other folks on this side of the Great Pond.

See you in the UK next September if all goes well!
