05 Oct 09 - 01:34 PM (#2738969) Subject: Folklore: Leif Erikson day Oct. 9 From: open mike Lief, son of Erik the Red, set foot on the North American continent 500 years before Christopher Columbus. In the year 1000, on the island of Newfoundland, this Icelandic explorer landed. The Vikings established a settlement there, but only stayed for 2 years. The day is celebrated just a few days before Christopher Columbus Day, which is Oct. 12. there have been runestones found dating from this time. Are the4re any songs commemorating this event? http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/erikson_leif.shtml |

On such an occasion I would likely sing Ken Graydon's, "Seafaring Men:" http://www.kengraydon.com You seafaring men You deep water rovers You East India sailors You brave Gloucester men You bold Viking raiders You old Cape Horn traders Your grandsons salute you You seafaring men From Gloucester to Biscay And on to San Paulo 'From Bath to New Brunswick And on to Calais From Dundee to Dover And half the world over You were either arriving Or sailing away So here's to the shades All you salt water sailors And here's to the memories You left to us then You sons of John Cabot You old Cape Cod whalers You Portuguese sailors You seafaring men We wish you calm waters And a fair wind behind you We wish you safe passage Wherever you be We wish you snug harbors At the end of your journey We wish you contentment You men of the sea You seafaring men You deep water rovers You East India sailors You brave Gloucester men You bold Viking raiders You old Cape Horn traders Your grandsons salute you You seafaring men -Adam Miller |
