The great arranger and good chap Robert Kirby has died at 61. Colin Irwin's obituary says it better than I could:

His string arrangements were always unconventional, imaginative and somehow mysterious and added considerably to Nick Drake's recordings among others. He was still doing it in recent times too (eg 'Land's End' from the recent Steve Ashley album)

Oh dear. The world is a darker, sadder place this morning. What a

year - 'they' have gone down like ninepins.

RIP Robert, and sincerecondolences to your family.

Very sorry to hear this. There's a nice interview with him at last year's folk awards on the BBC website.

RIP, Robert

His work with Nick Drake may be better known, but my favourite of the tracks he transformed is Shelagh Macdonald's Stargazer. A beautiful song anyway, but Kirby made it sublime.

On 13th September Robert Kirby conducted the Royal Artillery Band on the finale set of the Strawbs 40th anniversary event. I wish I could have been there.

I met Robert when I was 14 & we were inseparable for 10 years, since then we have been intermittently in touch & were recently reunited, falling straight back into where we had been all those years ago. We had such plans for the future. These things were not to be & I, like everyone who knew him, am devastated. He was incredibly talented & the kindest, most unassuming person you could wish to meet, & I loved him so. Right to the end he was up-beat, telling me not to worry.
His music will always be there for me & for everyone. I hope that all who know him will remember him for the lovely man he was.

My name is Jill Jayne, I was Robert's girlfriend from his days in Bishops Stortford onwards, through university in Cambridge, his days with Nick Drake who was also my friend, right up to 1976. We were then out of close contact until May this year when we rekindled our relationship & made plans for the future. I will miss him so much & it will be some time before I can even bring myself to listen to his music. Everybody from his 'world' has been very kind to me, particularly his children, he means so much to all of us.
